Review of Seeing Essence Chinese Colored Pencils
This is a really strange colored pencil review, I have been chasing a magical video clip showcasing the ability of the Seeing Essence colored pencil and I was desperate to chase and follow up on the claims, said video clip claimed. Check out my review and see for yourself if the mystery was real or mythical.
In this review we take a look at yet another set of colored pencils from China. The Seeing Essence Colored Pencils are a set of pencils that caught my eye when I was scrolling through Instagram. I watch a 10 second clip of an artist layering with a colored pencil. The ability of the pencil to layer was staggering, unlike anything I had ever seen before and so I found out what pencil was being used, purchased them, tested them and now reviewing them. Hopefully if you also see the same video clip I did, you will know one way or the other, via this review, whether or not the clip is real or edited.

I know so many KZread Content creators can on occasions some across as fake when they say how much their followers mean to them. Of course this is the case with some of them, but since becoming welcomed and embraced by this wonderful art community, I hand on heart can tell you that so many creators within this community mean exactly what they say. There seems to be a love and understanding among people of the art community that is really quite extraordinary.
Prior to becoming an art content creator on KZread, my life was at a very bleak stage, I had served 13 years in the British Army and after a serious spinal injury rendering me disabled, I was medically retired. My life spiralled out of control, I didn't want to be here, I had my wonderful wife and children to provide for and wasn't able to do this, nor was I able to be a soldier. On advice from my eldest daughter, I picked up and started to use some of her art supplies; and the rest, as they say, was history.
Starting this channel and becoming part of this wonderful community helped me to build my life back up to where I wanted it to be. Here I am almost 9 years into my KZread journey, trying to deliver accurate, honest and transparent reviews on the expensive and not so expensive art supplies we all love to and need to use. However, the love and support I have received from this community over those years has been heartwarming and at times emotionally overwhelming, simply due to the fact I have never experienced such warmth from those outside my family. I truly feel blessed and fortunate beyond words can describe.
Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart for your warmth, love and support.

Hi Lindsay, thank you so much for your comment I always appreciate you leaving comments and I just have to say in relation to the lovely comment about favourite creators supporting each other. I think Lindsay is one of the most supportive creators on KZread, I know speaking for myself, Lindsay has been an incredibly supportive person throughout my entire art journey, I am so incredibly fortunate. I was going to send you an email Lindsay, I was in such a rut and didn't know what to do or where to turn and I was going to email you. I wrote the email and decided it was unfair to burden you with my issues. Just watching your videos and a few other content creators really helped me. I just needed to give myself a metaphorical boot in the backside and pull my finger out of the same place and get working. Thank you so much Lindsay, I value your friendship so much, I am so incredibly fortunate to have gained some wonderful friendships within the colored pencil community, friendships I value so highly.

Thank you for your video and lots of encouragement. As you point out the paper used in the original video is from a company sometimes translated as Flying Bird or sometimes as PhoenixColor. I don't know if Phoenixcolor is just a sub-brand of the company or the western name of the company. In any case, the company's transliteration in western alphabet is Felie Niao (maybe spelled together). Felie Niao has also Phoenixcolor Colored Pencils of which you have already written a review (The Most Gorgeous Colored Pencils In The World). Apart from the Phoenixcolor pencils that you already reviewed, this company sells other pencils called "PHOENIXCOLOR Soft Colored Pencils" (which come in boxes of 36, 48 and 72) and, what is most important for my comment is that, if we compare the images, they are very similar to the Seeing Essences pencils... I wonder if the Phoenixcolor pencils (either in a beautiful packaging, or in their normal packaging) and these Seein essences are not the same with a different name? If you could incorporate them in a future comparison it would be very useful for your followers.

That is excellent information, this is why I always say the comment section is what improves my channel by 98% and the other 2% is me. It never ceases to amaze me the comments I get on some of my videos. So much of my work is based around comments from subscribers. I will absolutely get on than and I will also have to try and obtain a set of the Phoenixcolor Soft Colored Pencils and review them. Thank you so much for the advice and as soon as I complete the review I will let you know. I am working on three other reviews at the minute and once I have finished them I will get right on the comparison. Again, thank you so very much for your comment, I sincerely appreciate your advice.

Once I am finished replying to everyone in the comments section, I will test the paper and post the result on my social media platform if it works. I am so sorry for your loss, it is terrible, I love my Dad so much but for some strange reason, I thought when he passed I would be able to handle it a bit better. I know it is wrong, but I think it has something to do with the out of date thought that I was a Soldier in the British Army and not just any soldier I was in an Elite Regiment. There is an unwritten rule that you never cry because you are supposed to be a tough man. It is of course absolute nonsense and I am so happy I never brought my son up thinking that crying was something only ladies did. My Dad was never really like that, it was more the Army and I joined aged 16, I was only a kid. Any way thank you so much for your lovely comment and again I am so sorry for your loss.

I have had these pencils on my wishlist since October of last year but have been curious if they do preform the same as that clip (I REALLY wanted to buy them just from the clip alone, but I saw 2 comments say it wasn't the pencils making that texture and it's help me back ever since). Thank you so much, I was fortunate enough to be holding my Dads hand the night he passed, and from that time all the way through the arranging of the funeral which I did being the oldest of his children and the funeral itself, I never cried once, I kept myself so busy. I flew home to England from N Ireland the next day as I just couldn't afford to stay longer and be with my Mum, but the day I got home I had a shower and burst out crying. Occasionally, can you remember when you were at school or college or work and you forgot something important like homework or assignment, that feeling of loss and oh no, I don't have my homework, I get this feeling, I don't have my Dad and I panic. I feel, I can't phone him for advice anymore, when we have been in financial difficulties my Dad would be there to help if he could. Silly things like that, but it only happens when I slow down and have a quiet moment to myself. Thank you so much for your wonderful comment and support

Having seen the video now, I think it might be a combination of the technique and paper. It looks like paper that is toothy but fine tooth if that makes any sense? Like Bristol vellum 500 or pastelmat. I think they are using medium pressure. That or, like you say it might be, it's faked for views. Wouldn't shock me.

  • @DragonWistArt

The more I watch the more I'm convinced it's not fake. Its technique and paper. Quite similar to mine, but they're more skilled. You'll notice the block of colour is more even than the colour they're putting down, essentially theyre putting down a "base layer" in the video and the stuff already done has had a gentler second pass. Sorry I'm not very good at describing, I might send you an email with a video if thats okay? I'm not as good though haha

You have describe your thoughts absolutely perfectly, I completely understand what you mean. So in the review I did, the swatch I made was done of Bristol Velum, now it was the 300 and not the 400 Series, so I will check that. Someone in the comments suggested another paper they think it might be and I am inclined to agree with them. So once I have finished replying to everyone, I will test the paper in question as well as the 400 Series Velum and Ill also try the 500 Series Bristol Plate, although I think that paper is far too smooth. I completely understand what you mean regarding the color already laid down compared to the laying they actually do on the clip, there is certainly a difference. If I get the paper in question and it works the same as the video clip, I will post my results on my Social Media platforms and explain, but the credit will go to the person in the comments who suggested it, or if it is the 400 Velum I will absolutely credit you with the idea. Thank you so much for your comment and I completely understood your explanation, you laid it out perfectly. Thank you so much my friend.

Number 1: first and foremost do not apologize for a lack of content. Your father passed. You take all the time you need to grieve. End of discussion. Give yourself some grace, wee one. You put out so much content as it is, and it's all free, and it's all great. Number 2: I saw the same video and went on a pencil quest that took me a week, innumerable hours, and so many questions to people who barely spoke English and I don't speak Chinese and it was crazy, but I finally found the 72 set of these pencils on AliExpress. I really, really like them. But I did find out that the woman in the video was using Arches paper. I don't know about Fabriano because I don't use it, but I do use Arches with these pencils and it makes an incredible difference. I get the same result that she gets in the video using the Arches paper. Just something to consider. Number 3: I'm about to go order the 120 set now. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to spend more money that I don't have, Harry. I can always depend on you to wreck my budget for the month 😂.

Hullo Harry, I encourage you to just go out to your work area, sit and do some art. My Mom was my biggest fan and supporter. When she passed away I simply did not want to work or create art. I really had no choice as I had bills to pay. So I created work that was commissioned to do, but NOTHING for me and my heart. I decided that I had to do something to bring my joy back! So I would go to my desk and just paint swaths of watercolor paints. I was not trying to create anything recognizable! I spent the time just bringing joy back to me and this worked for me. You might try just going out to your workshop and drawing for yourself and not necessarily for a review or video. I commend your efforts for creating content for your channel. I believe that you can get your joy back, just keep believing that it will happen, keep creating your own art and ease up on yourself. I did enjoy watching your comprehensive reviews and this was a very nice video. Stay safe and be happy with whatever you create. Now I made quite a few lousey pictures, but I just kept going and eventually I started feeling the joy coming back into my heart and after a while I had joy in my art too! I know you will as well.😊

Thank you so much for your incredibly kind comment and I think your advice is perfect. I definitely need to do more art for me, just something I draw or paint that is for me and not a review. At the minute I need to do some reviews before I can paint for myself. Because of all the travelling back and forth to N Ireland to help my Mum before my Dad passed, it took a lot out of me financially, even though I received tremendous help it was still difficult. We had absolutely nothing to give our kids this Christmas and even though they are older now and so completely understood the circumstances, as a father I felt terrible. Although I don't make very much at all from KZread, it all helps and so I really needed to get back to it as soon as possible. I hope you are well my friend and I will certainly heed your advice.

The trick to that video is the paper! It’s not so much the layering but using just one colour. The hair is done with one pencil. I’ve gotten a similar result using Marco Chroma (Manga set) and a very cheap grainy FSC 200 gsm sketch pad from like a 1 £ or $ store. Using light pressure and trying to colour as evenly as possible. Go through your stash of cheap paper and try them all. Of course it won’t be as good as the video because they use special paper but still…

Anyway, if it is the paper and it layers as the video shows, I'll post it on my social media platforms, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. I tried to see if there was another seller on AliExpress that would ship to the US, but when I got to the payment section it was asking for a US address, which I don't have. I'll keep digging and amend the links for the US I provided. I am really sorry about that mate, when I add the links for other areas of the world, I just put in country of origins and then it will provide for me a price in the currency of whatever country. Thank you so much my friend, you are so right, when I am sat in my studio and surrounded by my gorgeous art products and a review to work on, it all helps me to focus on other things. My youngest daughter Amelia is really taking his passing terribly hard. He was an amazing Grandfather to my three children and my Sisters little girl. He just wasn't ready to die, you know the way some people have fought for years, are in a lot of pain and are so exhausted they are ready to go. My Dad wasn't in that place, he very much wanted to live and mainly for his Grandkids. My Dad was a very private man, really shy when around strangers and very dignified. When he had Bowel Cancer and had to have his Bowel removed and a colostomy bag fitted, I thought he wouldn't cope very well with it, because it would make odd and embarrassing noises that he was not in control of, but he didn't care. His view on it was; that bag was keeping him alive, which meant longer with his kids and grandkids. I know this sounds a bit rude, but my Dad told me every time he had surgery or procedures that meant he was put asleep, his exact words to me were, "Son, no matter what happens, even if they have to put tubes hanging out of my a**, make them keep me alive." And even the night he passed away, at that point he had been in hospital for about 10 weeks, I think he still thought he would turn around and get better. Thank you so much for your wonderful comment and your amazing support

@@TheArtGearGuide your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I lost both my parents by the age of 21. Honestly, I think it took me many years to get over the shock. Some days I can barely remember what they sound like. I hope someday I get to see them on the other side. As I am aging and seeing my friends lose their parents, I envy the many decades they had with them longer than I was gifted. I think that’s where my perspective comes from. There is definitely no right time to die. I just try to hold on to my faith in God and that maybe , just maybe we’ll all be together again. A wise customer said to me after recently losing his beloved wife , “This is your life, not a dress rehearsal. Do what you want to do now and don’t wait. “ Sometimes that has helped me to go out of my comfort zone and try new things, take a chance or just remember to savor every day, even the rainy ones. As I age, I’m over 50 now, I see how short life seems and I hope I have enough time to get to the things I would like to do. Even if I don’t , I do know a lot of my time was spent helping others along the way. God Bless.

They do have their place and work well with some colored pencils, but for me personally, I prefer velum, Plate or the Derwent Lightfast paper. I think the Lightfast paper and Fabriano offer a texture and tooth that transforms any pencil and allows endless layering and excellent blending. But I know some colored pencil artists really love using those papers and they create absolutely stunning work with them.

Is it not just a case of different market but same factory lines Harry? I mean much like crafting supplies not all can pay for their own industry ? Seen that happen with various brands when you have the same quality of paint just distributed over different market use. Nothing wrong with it as far as Im concerned we all have to make a living and save at some point; would be easier if the companies just be open on that, that way people can pick and chose for themselves.

@@TheArtGearGuide I referred to the comparisson on the tombow pencil with the white barrels ( but it could verywell be the video you watched and ai can be a royal pain in the touch); and I have not seen it as much in pencils yet, but then again Im fairly new at those, knowledge wise; I do know watercolor paint; I háve seen it in that more often. Where craft suppliers share a factory line with artist paints. So it would not be suprising if that can be the case in colored pencils. I know the agrivation of wanting to figure it out; if this brand doesnt share you can always reach out and ask the tombow manufacturer if they know what is happening; I know tombow to be very kind in their costumer service; maybe they know more. ( I have somewhat of a tombow fetish marker wise;read; I have the full set,lol ) The chinese manufacturers are very good at duping supplies as they have more access to pigments and all that jazz than uk or eu mainland has. They replicate fashion as well; like louis vitton or nikes and other popular clothing brands. It is fun to checkout but it is very much a case of buyer beware; costumes in the eu are currently trying to do a crackdown on dupes as that is against eu law. So be careful in what you order from the chinese market; fair warning. If you did not receive an order then costumes most likely seized it as dupe and thus violation of eu law.

I know I had never seen them before I watched the clip, nor heard about them, which is odd in this day and age given the amount of videos etc online showcasing artwork and the products used. With regards to the lightfastness, it is absolutely the most important thing in any art supply, but only for those artists selling their original work. When I first started out in the art community and fell in love with the pencil format. All I ever heard from artists I was watching and learning from was Lightfast, Lightfast, Lightfast. But back then, nobody mentioned lightfast products are only important to those artists selling their original or artists just wanting to frame and hang their work. As a result I went out and purchased a 72 set of Luminance, when I didn't even understand the basics of color theory, the correct methods of using colored pencils, the importance of paper etc. Now I am not saying that was a bad purchase on my part, but I feel I held myself back a bit because I was hesitant to use them as my art at the time was terrible. Had I of purchased a set of Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor, Koh-I-Noor or even the Faber Castell Goldfaber pencil, I might have been less hesitant to make mistakes and learn. I know a lot of this was my own insecurities and issues, but I they in my reviews to make it clear that Lightfastness is the number one important factor, providing you are doing the above. If you are not or you are new, you can refrain from paying the bigger prices on lightfast products, if you want. Thank you so much for your comment Peter mate, I really appreciate your support and comment, thank you so much

Thank you so very much for your donation, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. Any donations made go back into getting more products to review which is obviously getting harder to buy cause of the standard of living. So I can't tell you how much I appreciate your generosity, especially in the current climate. Thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart. There just aren't words strong enough to express my gratitude.

Sorry about your dad, hard isn’t it? I have multiple dreams about my mum who has been gone 3 years, I hate going to her grave, I fear her hand is going to come up out the ground, so I understand how difficult day to day can be. As for the pencils, well, they look nice, I’m glad I went through the whole video, when you ref them to Tombow, I have them, I’m not keen. But, I’m not a real artist, I do love adult colouring, I have near all derwent sets, I do like them, but, probably a shock, my favourite pencils so far, castle art gold. I am intermittently using prismacolours, but, I need more practice…. X

Hi Heather, you are an artist, the work adult colouring book artists create is staggeringly beautiful. The Tom Bow Irojiten would be useless on most adult colouring books, the Irojiten needs a high quality paper to see the best results from them. They are a pencil that requires lots of light layers and building up layer by layer. I found they are exceptional on Fabriano Artistico Hot Press 100% Cotton 140Lb Extra White paper and Derwent Lightfast paper. Both those papers are perfect for such pencils. Thank you so much for your lovely comment I really appreciate it

Do you live in the US? Someone else mentioned that the link I provided which was the cheapest seller of the pencils, doesn't ship to the US, so I am trying to find a seller that does and make sure the link I provided for Europe ships to the countries in Europe. I'll get back to you ASAP, thank you so much for letting me know.
