REVIEW: Letbricks train MOC. Is it any good? (It's not...)

Ойын-сауық

Letbricks offered to send me one of their sets to review, so I thought I'd take a look. Let's just say there is room for improvement...
The model I feature in the video is Letbricks MOC 79701 - Santa Fe GP9 Train, originally designed by Yellow.LXF (@yellowsdotlxf).
In the video I talk about the model itself, and Letbricks more generally, timestamps below.
To be clear: All of the frustration I express in this video is aimed at Letbricks, and not at Yellow.lxf or any of the other designers who have licensed models to them.

00:29 Unboxing
01:05 Build process
05:28 Electronics
06:56 A look around the model
08:47 Thoughts on Letbricks in general

I guess a good message to LETBRICKS is: When you design a model , PHYSICALLY build the model to test for clearances like he said, but also think about power placement.

A perfectly honest review and this model is definitely a good shelf piece. But if let bricks wants to survive they need to improve.

Agree 100% with EVERYTHING you mention although I built a different loco. I wrote to letbricks about the couplers supplied not fitting correctly , so they sent me 2 new couplers...... Exactly the same 🤦.

dude the fact that that is THE FIRST time you've had finger soreness when building lego or anything related to it is a surprise

The designer in to be blamed partially, on rebrickable there are people pointing out that the model has a few issues like the lack of space for the cables, the 5L axles, the boogie design. The building instructions btw are from the designers. But all that could be solved by building the model, by both the designer and Letbrick.

5:59 why not just mount the battery box upsides down… seems likes there’s enough cable length to do that while also keeping access to the button. Only problem would be taking the train off to charge it

Hmm... I would have to see the internal nose construction to know if Letbricks sent you the V1 version of the GP9, or the fixed V2 version. Definitely some things I need to improve upon in my models with the help of friends. Also to note the front coupler change and the receiver were requested specifically from Letbricks.

Firstly, thanks for your comment! There where a few things that probably should have been caught before sending the design to Letbricks, but honestly the rest of it is really a problem with Letbricks's business model, and not your design. As a MOC for advanced adult LEGO train enthusiasts, I actually quite liked your model. If I'd bought the instructions from you for $10 from Rebrickable, I would have been happy with it apart from the stairs. My issue is more that Letbricks markets the models as a cheaper and better alternative to LEGO, but what they licence are highly detailed MOCs that are designed by and for adult LEGO fans. They don't pay the designers enough for them to re-work the model to be as stable or easy to build as a regular LEGO set, but that is the experience they try to see to their customers. So basically all my problems are with Letbricks, and not with you

I bought Yellow's instructions from Rebrickable, and while building it I immediately saw the stairs problem. Instead of the two 99206, I substituted 1 87609. Now the nose platform and steps are connected above and below, and are solid. I agree that the bogie frames are a bit wonky, so I'm building technics motorized bogies as a substitute.. This solves (I think) the two major issues I've seen so far. @@Tiesproductions

Thanks for the review ! I bought and build the Morningstrummer Big Boy set, and did not experience the issues you came across. I did not realise LetBrick does not test-build the models on their site. It's kinda cheap to just assume the (digital) designer delivers a perfect model for the real world. I know first hand that a nice design is something different than a real brick model (built with bricks that may have some clamping issues in these cases) experiencing something trivial like gravity, for instance....

I have the same big boy kit on a table in front of me and the instructions are bloody awful. Definitely needs some fine tuning and refining.

Not gunna lie, especially for the price it seems like a great jumping off point. A lot more detail than most lego train models, and some solvable issues. I've been out of the train game for a little while, but Lego themselves don't have a great record with the train series. The new kit they have you can't officially motorize (what?) and the last kit I had, the Crocodile, needed some adjustments to look good and traverse switches reliably.

And thats the reason why I stick with your designs haha ;). It is a real addiction now... So for I made the Mat'64, the ICM, the NS 1200, the 2200 diesel locomotive, the 1700 locomotive and right now I am slowly collecting all the pieces for the SGMm and pieces for the middle part of the DDAR.

Hey, I recently contacted Letbrick to produce one of my MOC, we just signed the contract a few says ago, from what I see of this video, Letbricks would definitely need to test build the models to check if the Mac designer did it right. Letbricks asked me for the instructions, part lists, render/ pictures and STICKER SHEETS, I think Letbricks isn't wrong in their operating scheme but they should make sure with the MOC Designer that the parts list, instruction and stickers sheets are correct, and they should also test build it themself. I am pretty confident in the Instructions and everything I published so for my creation Letbricks should be fin, hopefully there is no missing piece...

Thanks for your review. This is why we buy Lego sets and not garbage from off brand companies. The designer of this set should be heavily scolded for being lazy and not actually building the set first so user friendliness can be assured. Maybe he/she will learn in the future. Doesn't matter much to me though. I buy Lego.

oh man... for what you get, you have to put a lot of effort into making a video, just a couple of pictures and a text will be enough for them :D I also received Free "lego" for reviewing from another Chinese company (Fun Whole) and I didn't have 1% of the problems you had with this one. I think its kinda "Russian roulette"

Just a question did you have any problems with parts not fitting right and keep popping out of place and not holding right?

Most of the parts where hard to press down, but once they where pressed down properly, they would mostly stay in place. The only real exception was the pin on the train motors, they didn't have a strong connection, so the motors would constantly fall of the model when picked up.

While the untested models often result in proplems its also wirth noting that the designer builds only virtual models which leads to many of the unstable connections/collision erros you've found.
