Review - Harbor Freight 8x12 Lathe

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After two years of use, we pause to take stock of the 8 x 12 lathe from Harbor Freight. Our conclusion is that the lathe itself is an excellent choice for the home machinist, but is no longer a bargain, given that the price has doubled since my purchase.

    Hello. I liked your review. I got my 8x12 in 2007. Still loving it to this day. It is heavy, rigid, and runs like a dream. I also have the HF 6x4 metal bandsaw and the HF round column mill/drill. These three tools have spoiled me for my diy projects and repairs.

    OBTW, you probably already know that the 8x12 and the round column mill/drill have been discontinued.

    deadoverlord - The lathe itself is manufactured in China and is sold under several different brands, including Harbor Freight and Lathemaster. It's the same lathe wherever you buy it, but Lathemaster has great accessories and now has a competitive price.

    @myusualchannel The reason why we want a metal gear is to be able to tap the ends of shaft and do small, precise press fits.

    Can you show us how you wired the capacitor up and what the work piece finish looks like, like you showed above?

  • @jfbrink

    Aaron: I actually converted over to a 3-phase motor several years ago, so I don't even have that capacitor & motor anymore. I don't understand the question about workpiece finish -- this is a "real" lathe, so the finish depends on the operator's choices not any specific characteristics of the machine. For what it's worth, over 5 years later, I'm still using this thing at least several times a week, often daily.

    Hello thanks for review. I am brand new to lathes and want to buy one for shaving drum cymbals down. 24" radius to 10". what would you recommend for this type of job. i would strictly be using this to shave cymbals down and nothing els. thank you.

    Is this on some sort of production scale or for person use? If I needed to this, I would build a custom machine for it. Even if you could rough cut the 24" down to nearly 10" off the lathe, a lathe that will take a big lathe to do the job. You'd also want to fabricate a backing of some kind to keep the thin disk from vibrating / wobbling. Even 1/8" thick disks can get wacky around 7" in diameter.

    I bought a Harbor Freight 12 X 36 65044 lathe and the YL90L-4 2HP motor died on me in under a year. I ordered a motor under warranty and have been waiting three months and never received one. I get the run around every time I cal them. The lathe has a one year warranty, but it is worthless so just keep in mind that if anything breaks you’re on your own. I’ll probably have to replace all of the electrical to get mine going again. I feel bad about saying this but it is the truth.

    It looks like LatheMaster went out of business last year (2016). With the Harbor Freight 8x12 listed at $999 at the moment (9/2017), the Grizzly 8x16 variable speed lathe seems an appealing alternative.

  • @jfbrink

    @jfbrink

    I know nothing about that, but if the barrel is 3/4" outer diameter or less, it can extend through the headstock. I don't know what sort of bed length you'd need, but this lathe will give you 14" of usable space.

    What size is your cutter shank you're using? 3/8"? Im ordering one of these lathes and theres not much on info for the req. tooling. Also is that tail stock a Morse Taper #2 - Drawbar Type Arbor? I need to order a Drill chuck as well. Thank you for sharing!

  • @jfbrink

    @jfbrink

    8 жыл бұрын

    +RadiationRider - Actually, it's 1/2", which is what I typically use, although my cut-off holder is 3/8" and I have done small bores with a 1/4". The tailstock is MT2, but not drawbar. You just kinda shove it in there and you push it out by over retracting the holder. Mine came with a drive chuck, but that was a long time ago, so maybe it's changed?

    I'm researching lathes right now and am thinking of getting one about this size initially... from the sound of it, you're implying that the 8x12 is much bigger than the 7x10... the main objective I have is that I want to create my own copper tubing that will be 12.5" long but less than an inch in diameter. Would either of these lathes work for that? or would they be too small? Thanks in advance.

  • @jfbrink

    @jfbrink

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hath'alud LaFox - The critical difference is that the 8x12 is much, much more robust. The 7x10 is great for delicate work, like, say model making, but for anything of a real-world scale, I would go with the 8x12. A 12.5" would fit fine on mine, depending on what you put in the tailstock to hold it. If your tube is under .75, it will fit through the headstock and you can 12.5" or longer pieces with no problem.

  • @jfbrink

    I hear you, but I don't really see it that way. When I bought the lathe 11 years ago, it was less than half the price of any comparable machine. Yes, it promptly blew a capacitor, but I paid just a couple dollars for a replacement. The machine is still running strong and accurate with frequent use across all these years. It was a genuine bargain for a quality machine (and a crappy capacitor).

    Nice video :) The robotics shop where I do most of my work borrowed a HF mini-lathe similar to what you have, just a bit smaller. It turned out to be rather useless as I had to re-machine virtually everything because the finishing passes had been omitted (as could be expected with cheaper tools). Once that was fixed we quickly noticed that the gears in the tail-stock were plastic. Is it the same on this more expensive version?

    @BudFox559 - Yes, my motor died the first time I used the lathe -- a capacitor blew. It took months for HF to figure out that they could not source a replacement (odd since they still manufacture the lathe). I installed a new capacitor from eBay and used it for years until recently the other capacitor blew. I used that as an excuse to get an AC motor and speed controller. That worked great for me, but if I were trying to solve the problem through HF, I would be very disappointed.

The Grizzly 8 inch swing lathe is Now $1400 not counting freight. The Shop Fox 9x19 is also $1400 to buy new on Ebay. Comparing new to second hand on Craig's list is an apple and orange crap shoot .
