How does it feel? One complaint I hear is that it doesn't breathe well... Makes you hot when the temps get above 80...

@@bugscooters That's true. It does block air flow. It's also heavy. I can notice the weight over and above my armored jacket.

Just replace my Klim Ai-1 airbag after a second deployment. Saved my arse 2x now. First one I walked away from and rode away. Second one was June 18, 2023 - I came off the bike at 45-50 MPH (using exceptionally poor judgment at the time, mind you). Got 3 titanium rods in my right leg, 2 titanium ones in my right arm, a broken left hand and totally reconstructed left knee. 2 months in the hospital but will say I am walking unassisted and almost cleared to ride again. Airbag vest was a game changer. Helmet goes without saying but would you know I didn't have a scratch or even a bruise on my entire torso? Back of the vest was mangled. Was wearing full gear level 2 armor top and bottom. Would be paralyzed or dead had I not had the airbag. My 2 cents . . . (at time of accident was wearing Klim Induction Pro jacket, Bohn body armor pants under Klim Outriders, Klim Ai-1 airbag, Revit Mangrove gloves and a 6D Helmet (just purchased the same white Shoei RF 1400 you have for my second time - should have kept the first one as better fit and finish than the 6D. That said: 6D came thru with flying colors for me that go round) Much success and God bless, y'all.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm impressed as all heck that you're gonna get back riding after that. I think I'd hide in a closet and call it good. I'm pretty much completely sold on the idea of an airbag system, especially after reading this. I'm looking at the Alpinestars one, the one that goes under normal riding gear. But in the end I'm not sure it makes a ton of difference which one, just that you have one. Again, thank you. I think people need to hear these stories and start considering using this tech.

Tech Air 5 looks to be a better bag for overall protection - has 2 canisters of argon instead of 1 like the Klim. I ride in Florida and SC mostly so I like the Klim as it's a little cooler - worn with level 2 armor when it goes off I figure my shoulders are reasonably well guarded. That said - in a crash I'd take the Tech Air 5 but everyday . . . Klim Ai-1 - Helite backpack is kinda interesting, too @@bugscooters

Oy! I bought a hi-viz vest at Lowe's to wear over whatever jacket I had on. Around -- or under -- twenty bucks. And if that Helite thing doesn't breathe well, well, down here in Desertville, fuggidaboutit!

Funny. I did the very same thing tonight - grabbed an old hi-viz vest and threw it over my comfy black jacket. That’s how I’m gonna ride at night from now on I think.

I've been planning to get a Helite for a while. I already wear full gear with hi-vis, but I'd like the peace of mind of extra spine and collarbone protection. A lot of people are dismissive of safety, and there are already a few hot takes in the comments here. For me, the bottom line is - I love motorcycling, and I want to enjoy it as much as I can, and for as long as I can. Anything that helps keeps me out of hospital or the morgue is a solid investment.

One of the best safety add-ons that I've added to my riding is the Brake Free helmet brake light. It is awesome. You can buy multiple mounts and switch the light from helmet to helmet if you wear a variety. Expensive but well worth it.

It works perfectly. It is USB re-chargeable so there are no wires etc. Very bright and visible. Has three different light modes which are very easy to change. Seeing you have a white Shoei, they also come in white now. They very rarely offer a sale but if you open a inquiry dialog with them, they'll probably send you a discount code. Lots of KZread vids on them and Brake free has a good website. You do not even know it's on your helmet because it's so light. You won't be disappointed. @@bugscooters

I don’t own one of these airbag jackets/vests/etc. but they’ve peaked my curiosity. I’ve heard the Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 is a pretty good one. Seems to have ventilation for warmer climates. I’ve not looked at the one you mentioned. I heard it mentioned before that were you to throw yourself out of a moving vehicle at 55mph do you feel you have enough protection on? So would it be ridiculous to wear one of these while riding a Vespa? Not at all imo. I see the videos of people riding with no gloves, in shorts, etc. it’s just stupid. Go ride. Have fun. But above all be safe and make it back home afterwards.

Agreed! I've also seen the Alpinestars Tech-Air. As a huge fan of Alpinestars stuff, I really do need to check that out closer.

Bug, I have the Helite leather jacket and the mesh air. My friend rides with the turtle. I’m local if you want to check them out. I’m sure I can show you all three if you want to compare. There is a huge advantage to having only one piece of gear that you have to John and off as opposed to the jacket plus the turtle. On the other hand, the rest of your riding jackets will become obsolete unless we use the turtle. I have ridden with all three and I prefer having a jacket. I find it more comfortable to have only one thing on and less stuff to stow and carry. If I were to choose only one, I would choose the mesh air jacket, it is the most comfortable, versatile for all seasons, and rain, and visible. Also, I would encourage you to check out Fortnine’s most recent video reviewing the airbag jeans, backpack, and a different brand jacket. You should also check out his video on the video on the turtle if you haven’t. For street riding, there is still a big safety advantage to using the tether and not the electronically deployed airbags. He cites the data on failures to deploy and other reasons why a tethered airbag is better for street riding. Let me know if you want to meet up.

@@bugscootersAesthetically, and style wise, I prefer the leather one. But I am impractical that way. The other one is much more functional . The leather one is much heavier, although something about that helps me feel more snug and secure. They’re both awesome jackets. For our climate, the textile jacket is more functional. They also make an adventure style jacket that looks a bit more like wear in the black and wouldn’t be bad on a modern Vespa.

Very interested in the Helite airbags. They also have the H-Moov backpack. Compared to the vest or jacket options it seems to offer a little less protection over the hips, but I wonder if thats a deal breaker versus the option of a zip-on backpack...

I noticed the lack of hip protection too. That's sort of a deal breaker for me. I like my hips. (I mean, someone has to like my hips, so might as well be me!)

The boots are top tier for motorcycling, and way overkill for scootering. The pants have an excellent safety rating. The jacket is ce rated and absolutely not garbage. The helmet is top of the line, best you can buy for under $1K. The gloves are garbage. I'll give you that. But really? An Aerostich is the recommended scooter gear and everything else is garbage? That is NOT the message I want to send to anyone who watches me.

I agree with you on the boots and the helmet (I use Shoei myself) I apologize for being so absolute in my comment.

If you need to wear a turtle shell air bag and hi- vis gear, perhaps motorcycles isn't for you. This is why oversized SUVs were invented, to make ppl feel "safer". There's something valuable about being constantly confronted by your own mortality on the road that makes a biker feel more alive imo

@@bugscooters again it's just my opinion ,but everyone knows motorcycles are inherently dangerous machines. Acceptance of that is important to enjoy the ride. If you want to be safer,become a better rider instead. Increase your skill set so you're prepared for whatever comes.

@@dallasdandigitalproduction393 I find this problematic in that, increasing your skillset and increasing your protection levels are two different things. It's not an either/or, and I fear that a lot of young riders might get the impression that, with added skill comes proportionately less risk. There are things that are completely out of our control. So if some added gear improves one's chances of coming home alive, while AT THE SAME TIME not making them complacent... It's a win-win. Rider skill is never replaced by better gear. It's just augmented. There is zero wrong with that. I feel your premise assumes that I 1. am afraid of motorcycles and 2. have not attained a proper skill level. On the contrary. I love and live for riding. I have a healthy but not out-of-place fear of riding. Enough to keep my wits about me but not enough to stop me. And I practice. A lot. In the end, it's all an individual choice. But if I have the chance to influence even one person to increase their safety, I'm gonna take it. Stay safe. It's all I care about.

I agree! Just the other day, I was talking to a motorist who owns one of those new-fangled cars with airbags, and he also turns his headlights on "for visibility". Can you believe that? I told him that he should try driving with his lights off and confront his mortality, and he just looked at me like I'm insane. I bet he even wears a seatbelt! 🙃
