I played another classic, yippee! If you haven't played FF6 I would recommend, but only after you play FF9. ;P Hehehe.

I really love your retro reviews. It's like a fresh pair of eyes judging the greatness of a game and how it holds up today. These games can't live off of legacy forever, soon there will be a new generation wanting to see what all the hype was about past games. You're like a guardian of retro greatness. Keep up the good work.

This is it. A lot of opinions on KZread, Reddit and the internet and you don't know who's commenting or where they're coming from (e.g. from nostalgia, or perhaps they've only played certain games). I'm 17, recently getting into older JRPGs, and these retro reviews are great because of exactly what you said. Pelvic also cares about a lot of things I care about in games so I trust her opinion more. It's a lot less alienating than reading comments on the internet. And, on a tangent, whilst I appreciate the strides that older games may have made, I don't want to spend 20+ hours playing a game that I feel I have played a similar modern game of (that would have had better QoL and graphics on top), not too similar at least. I also don't mean to say older games aren't worth our attention either but if it's a game that doesn't hold up as much, maybe I'd watch a 20 min KZread video on it rather than 20+ hours of gaming it.

yes the pre rendered cut scenes were made for play station one however it was not a remake but a repackage / compilation/ game collection. the package was sold as final fantasy anthology which contains 2 games FFV and FFVI. I think it was the first time FFVI was properly named FFVI in north america. it contains a better translation of the game and is essentially the beta form of FFVI for the NDS. FFVI had a number of rereleases /repackages with major bugfixes but never really got the proper 3d remake that it deserves.

This is the best final fantasy in the series. Great battle system, fantastic story, captivating character personalities and development, and fun dungeons. Also Kefka had to be the strongest villain out of the entire series since he became a literal God and actually succeeded in the absolute control of the entire planet. This game deserves a remake over all the others and do it maybe like the octopath travelers kind of design.

VI is near and dear to me. Very memorable. I remember playing 9, but if you put a gun to my head I could not tell you the names of any characters. I simply recall a FF that reverted to a more fantasy esque world, especially after 7 and 8. I remember that I enjoyed 9, but yeah not as memorable as other FFs. I think I remember the main character had a tail, and there was this knight with a huge chin. Yeah I’ll have to play it again, honestly. Anyway, great channel! Solid reviews. :)

Just discovered your channel and I'm really enjoying your review style! I was in 7th grade when 6 (3) came out and I think it's important to keep in mind how monumental this game was. I ignored 7 and 8 because they weren't final fantasy games to me. When 9 came out I played it and loved it because it (to me) was everything that a final fantasy game should have been in the newer generation. So for me they are equal. 6 for being first to show what was possible for a jrpg and 9 for fully realizing that vision. You've got a new sub!

Usually when I see people talking about the greatest RPG from the golden era of the 90s it's Chrono Trigger that gets the most mentions. That being said Final Fantasy 6 is my favorite game of all time. Partly due to nostalgia as it came out when I was 12. My brother and I saved up money we had earned mowing laws in our neighborhood to buy it together since we were both so enamored of FF4 previously. The game didn't disappoint and to this day I've probably played through it close to 10 times, trying different builds for different characters on subsequent playthroughs. Objectively FF9 may be the best in the entire series, but 6 holds a special place in my heart due to the times and circumstances under which I have experienced it.

I think FFVI fans might be so defensive or vocal about their love for the game because ever since FFVII came out, it feels like we've been screaming into the void for any sort of attention (mostly from Square itself). It doesn't excuse any asshattery on our parts tho. People gonna love what people gonna love, and fans have to respect that.

  • @traviswall1982

    @traviswall1982

IMO I think if someone feels that another game gets more undeserved love and attention (as well as extra content: remakes, movies, sequels etc.), they have every right to make all the noise that they want, and in this case, I think FFVI fans have every right to trash FFVII for being overrated and stealing their spotlight, not the FFVII fans, but the game itself. FFIX is my favourite game in the series, and I love FFVI too, but it really does grind my gears when all people talk about is FFVII and not the greater FFs like FFIX and FFVI. I've come to accept that the only way FFIX is ever gonna get remakes, movies and sequels is by making as much noise as possible - spreading the word of FFIX's greatness and trashing FFVII, and if enough of us do this, then Square Enix may hear us and we will get what we want.

Great vid, thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s worth noting that this was originally released as final fantasy III on the SNES. To think they attempted a semi 3d world map on the SNES back then is bonkers. They really changed the FF formula with this title (e.g. no “job” system, no crystals as the central mcguffin, etc). It was “remastered” a couple times (ps1 anthologies, and then that mobile/ds version). Stunning game, that definitely hold up nearly 30 years later.

I personally have VI as fave and IX as my second on the list, I love VI because I love the characters, the world, the villian, the plot and that almost all characters in my opinion felt deep like real people. I also like the subtle stuff like learning about Shadows past while sleeping in inns.I love that Terra is not your typical hero character, I love the tragic tone as I love tragic fiction in general. I love the secrets, like the secret characters and your actions can determine if you can get Shadow in the last part of the game or not. Or if you visit Lockes ex-girlfriend in a coma or not or if you play Sabin and Edgar at the right time to see their coin toss. I loved to collect espers, loved the side quests, loved the final dungeon were you had to use almost all characters as a team. It gave reason to use most characters as one didn ot want anyone to to be too far off in levels. So for me it is number 1, and it was not the first FF I ever played so that is not the reason. FFIX comes second for me though. :)

I recently played FF6 for this first time in over 20 years. Last time I played it, I was in 5th grade. I never thought about the idea of nostalgia being an influence but I guess it is. I loved it then and now. When I was a kid, I played FF1 but I got frustrated and lost as it was text heavy and I was a really bad reader. I learned about the world through cable tv. When I saw my older brother turn on FF6 for the first time, I was blown away by the intro, it had cinematic features, it was like a movie. I guess in that sense, it spoke to my generation, I'm 33 btw. Anyway thank you for the review, thumbs up!

Agree with you here, and I did play 6 when it came out. It was a godsent when it came out... and was dethroned slightly by Chrono Trigger (did you do this one, yet, I'm not sure...). Overall, I do prefer 9 if only because of the skill learning system with your equipment which doesn't mean you can just destroy everything with Ultima (with an Economizer = 1 MP!) or an X-Fight with Sabin and 2 claws by the end of the game.

Original version in '94 had no prerendered cut scenes, it was just in game pixel art cutscenes, it was only a 24 megabit SNES cartridge. Also the mode 7, music, and length of the game were quite an achievement with the technology and memory constraints of the time.

Surprisingly, my favorite Final Fantasy villain is Rubicante from Final Fantasy 4 because he really admires Cecil and his friends for wanting to save the world and for their strength. And plus he almost always heals your party before you fight him. So he gives you a better advantage when fighting him.

This is why I love your reviews, you're honest, sometimes TOO honest, but you manage too keep your cool through it all and that's a rare thing to see on KZread and on the internet in general, where often the tiniest little thing that's off can lead to a meltdown of epic proportions (perhaps ot would be really funny if you had a meltdown one of these days). As a person who much like you didn't play this game when it was brand new, therefore I don't have as much of a nostalgic bias as those other veteran players do and I can see where all of your criticism is coming from. When I played this game only a few years ago I ended up loving it, and mind you I am not a huge FF fan, and I didn't even liked FFVII or FFIV (the other two big daddies of the FF franchise) that much. I loved the setting, I loved the characters (especially Celes, Cyan, Edgar and Sabin, but also had a soft spot for Gau). loved the main villain, loved the battle system, but I would be lying if I said that the whole experience was perfect as its plagued by many of the other problems that other JRPGs of the time do. So, for the record, you don't have to apologize so much lady, at least with me. I learned to stop being mad at video game reviews some time ago; #1 because there's no such thing as an objectively perfect game; #2 Because everybody comes from different places and likes different things; # 3 because it's a waste of time (being mad); and #4 because I am a very stubborn person, and even if other people say a game's not that great, I still want to experience it firsthand and make my own opinions. So you keep tearing games a new one, and I'll keep watching (unless it's a game that I haven't played and I want to avoid spoilers).

I like how you give the game a 9.5 but still anticipate backlash. As far as villains go I liked Golbez the most but Sephiroth elicited a stronger reaction - oh, fuck this guy - more than any other villain in the series.

Yeah, the cg cutscenes were a later edition, added during the PlayStation 1 rerelease. They were… they *are*, not a great interpretation of the willowy, finely detailed Amano art style, very limited by the chunky CG capabilities at the time.

Favorite villain? Kuja. He just wanted to live and find the meaning of his existence. I also rank 9 above 6 but only by a little. I also tend to put FF 12 up there too despite its pacing issues (caused by the director leaving when he got sick). I know everybody likes 7 and 10 and while I do like 'em, I'd play 5 and Tactics: War of the Lion first. I do hope you review Chrono Trigger one day. That's the JRPG I love the most, along with Arc the Lad II and the PS1 Lunar games.

hmm.. both VI and IX are my all time favorite FF games, but I think you should've played the original SNES version for VI. something about the PS version is off. can't tell if it's the different music compression or the added CG scenes, but it just didn't have that SNES magic to it. overall VI edges out IX for me for both music and characters. story I can go either way. and Terra's theme tops all music from IX.

Hey, 9.5 is still a super high score for this game! I've only played the early parts of it... less than 10 hours I guess, and I'm excited to get it on PS3 sometime and do it all. Cyans story was so sad to me too and one of the things that stood out to me the most. His theme still brings a tear in my eye... :'( For the FF games I've played and completed, which are IV, VII, VIII, IX and X, IV and IX are my favourites for sure.

I'm replaying 9 now. I agree that the music may be better than this one. However, it seems like their need to start every track from the beginning makes it so you usually can't hear much from a track before the scene is over. The track passing sorrow for instance never actually gets going in the scene it's used unless you go through dialogue at a snails pace. I'm similar to you. People say FF6 did everything best, and I say "well but 7 is where it's at".

This will always be my fav game ever. The first real rpg i ever played was ff4. I loved it so much and didn't think anything would top it. Then this came out on snes and i got it as soon as it was out. I stayed up all day and night many times playing it. Making up illnesses to miss school just to play it. I've never been so attached to a game before. Never played a game with better characters and stories. If they remake any other ff's like the ff7 one, i hope it's this one. I was glad they didn't hold back on the deaths in this game like they did so many times in ff4. The only games that come close to this one in my mind are Chrono trigger, chrono cross, suikoden 3, and shining force 2. I was never able to get into ff9 that much. I mean i got it like every other, as soon as it came out. And i actually just got done playing through it again. But it never pulled me in that much. I felt like without Vivi i wouldn't care about any character in it. But many feel that way about ff8 and it's my 2nd fav. 6, 8, 4, 12, 10, 11, 5, 14, 7, 9, 3, 1, 15, 2, 13. Tactics was great, mystic quest for snes was good. 13-2 was SO much better than 13. Thanks for giving my fav game some love.

This is the best JRPG after Chrono Trigger. So great to see not only a female but a black female doing reviews of my childhood games. I was so lonely as a black nerd in the 90s. My friend Lamonz that introduced me to the game was one of a handful of black nerds I had met growing up in an all white suburb of Atlanta. Ironic given it’s one of the blackest cities in the USA.

In response to your end comments on what this game (that I never played) has, it also has Dancing Mad, legitimately one of the *best* final boss themes ever. I swear we need more overly ominous orchestral organ music like this in video games. XD Also, yes I love Kefka and lately watching stuff with him and listening to the music that plays with him has just given me a little more of a push for life (ironic, because he’s a nihilistic psycho who saw no value in life itself.). Also I also love Kuja… him and Kefka (tho, not at all in the same exact way if you get what I’m saying.. 😏)…

Best villan in an FF game for me, though he's lesser known since he's from the MMO Final Fantasy XIV, but it's Emmet-Selch, never have I had a more wonderfully nuanced and sympathetic villan in an FF game ever. Not only does he travel with your party for a good portion of the expansion he's part of giving commentary and such, but you just learn more about him and his motivations... and by the end you even see his point of view, even though you going against him in the end is the right thing to do. I honestly never expected such a deep hard hitting story from an mmo.... but FFXIV is really is one of the finest ones ever made.
