I have a 12 set of these as well as some far more expensive brand sets. The colors work great for my urban sketching, the palette is super thin and high quality sturdy. The brush is great too, not too small- not too large. I take it everywhere out and about. The point of these pan sets is to take them out with you in the event a moment of inspiration strikes. And generally you’ll have a small sketchbook to use them in. These are a great buy. Excellent review! * Those 2 side wells are for water.

I love it when they print the paint information on the pans! Especially when you're a clumsy fool like myself and tend to knock things all over the place regularly. =>.

I received this set as a surprise gift, I had never tested this brand before (had been using Windsor & Newton or Sennelier). I was very pleasantly surprised, the colours are so vibrant and so... Unctuous? So easy to rewet. I use it quite often in addition to my other palettes because I really love the feel of it. Definitely would recommend.

I just bought this Aquafine set and I was looking for just such a tutorial as this. Thank you for posting!

Couple months ago I got this set with a good price, and it's finally became part of my travel art supply, with pentel water brush & drawing pen. All fit in my bag, now I can do quick sketch & watercolour everywhere ^^ this set works well with my daily life ^^ (fifiolin)

I have the round 18 color travel set. It is a really great piece of quality and vibrancy.

From some YT video, I got the idea of cleaning my plastic palettes with toothpaste; it works quite well, although I then wash them with dishwashing liquid to get any remaining stickiness or graininess out. Do it every second or third time to get out the phthalo and quin stains.

I got the 24 set for my first ever set of paints. I am so glad that its not just me that thought they were great. Also the tin they come in isn't big at all.

I purchased my set on Etsy from a shop named TheArtShopSkipton a week ago. I wasn't sure what Jackson's was at that time, haha. I don't really care about spending the few extra dollars, anyway. It goes to supporting a small business! Though I will go to Jackson's for replacement pans for the gamboge yellow and cobalt blue, and perhaps get a better red.

Pleased you did this review as I've been wondering how the two sets compare. I noticed that the Daler Rowney site had a new colour chart. It seems that there are some changes from the previous selection. Some of the pigments have changed I think. The refills seem ridiculously cheap. I've seen them at for £2 (regular price, not sale price). I haven't looked at Jackson's so the price might be different on there. I really like your explorer cats 🐱🐈

@@maiaferioli8637 It’s a great little set. Very compact and small. The quality of the paint is excellent. I couldn’t tell the difference between them and tube paints. I would definitely recommend this set. Very inexpensive too 😊

I havent done watercolor for almost 15 years but i want to do a painting for my grandmothers memorial. I was worried about this being a cheap set (i got it locally for $20 and locally things are EXPENSIVE) I was so surprised by how saturated these colors are. I watered down as much as i remembered i needed to and on my practice sheet (no i didnt swatch) the base color i put down was like SO DARK but it lightened pretty well. I was able to fix my mistakes so easily

Yay! I'm glad you had a good experience with this little set! It's a little hidden gem, in my opinion. The paints are really nice and strong and they are fun to work with! :)

Every time I find a new interesting palette, I check KZread and you pretty much always have a video on it 😁 I really like the look of this set, very sleek and compact. But I'm not so sure about the color selection for this palette. I think a good split primary should be the default, really, unless it's a specifically themed palette. But I like the box itself, might be worth it just for that 😅

I use this pallet, it's super useful for painting birds !

Not for me, I had bad experience with them: they don't mix well (earth tones and hooker green), they don't dissolve well in water (they are quite "sandy") and hooker green seems to have cyanoacrylate in it since the brush becomes almost impossible to clean with just water (unlike every other color). I don't have all these problems with my reeeeally old Cotman set (but neither with a newer Cotman set from my friend) and Van Gogh's pans. Daler-Rowney ultramarine violet seems to be ok.

Comparing the color choice of this to my 12 color cotman travel set, this one wins me, cotman has a white color i never used, and it lacks a warm red, not sure why it set up this way, and cotman costs a bit more.

I find it very hard to get the pigment out to get saturated colour , especially when I mix two colours

I just purchased this set, what originally appealed to me is the absence of black and white, which means you’re actually getting technically what you would if a black and white included set had 14 colors

Yes! That and the affordability are my two favorite elements of this set, and the paints are good too! :D

I have the dealer rowney watercolor aquafine paints in the circular shape, but it is currently in storage. I moved and I haven't gotten everything out of storage yet. Anyhow, I really liked them as well as the cotman paints.

I've wanting this set instead of the cotman set in the past so much!!! Since it has a black and no white.... But I'm not totally disappointed, the cotman has better triad in my opinion and I think they had reformulated their paint pants since, they're not as crappy as they've said! Well at least I can always replace with artist quality or even the aquafine pans!

I wondered too if the cotmans could have been changed a bit. I bought a sketchers set of 12 half pans some months ago (and then suddenly started seeing the (older) negative comments about the cotman paints!). But I actually like the set a lot, so I thought that maybe I had a lucky batch :D The colour selection is well balanced, better than several other starter/travel sets, and I have a lot of fun exploring the mixes I can get. No trouble getting vibrant colours and practising all the techniques. Recently I bought the Meiliang Pretty Excellent set of 36, because of the good reviews and out of curiosity (and because I couldn't resist...). Compared to the cotman paints the meiliang paints are creamier, and to me that is the biggest difference between both paints: the cotmans are 'harder', and in finished paintings I find the cotmans giving a somewhat 'rougher' feel, and the meiliangs smoother. Cotman also has more granulation. I like that difference, and I love both sets. And Eve, thank you for your informative videos!

The grey separated when I tried to mix it with blue

Hello! I'm starting with watercolours. If I didn't buy this set is because I'm not totally convinced with the colours. I've heard that a set with lots of colours is not the best either, so now I have the chance to go for Aquafine x24 set or Mungyo x12 set, that costs the same and I don't know what to do because they say maybe Mungyo has better quality, but I'm not sure if I'll be ok without a carmin-ish red to mix. What worries me the most about Aquafine is that I've not seen lots of videos or examples of its transparency painting over already dried layers of colour. Have you tried this with lighter colours? If I'd choose the Aquafine, would you recommend the 18 or 24 set? Thank you and I loved the illustration

Well, I think I would be better off then with the 24 color square tin travel set (or the 10 color set) because as much as I love this little pallette, the Color selection is.... Odd to say at least. Why cobalt hue PB29+Pigment White? I'm glad they don't have a white and black though.

Nice overview. I am now torn between buying these or the Windsor & Newton Cotman, or maybe even the Schmincke or Daniel Smith watercolour paints. I am a beginner and it gets a bit overwhelming when choosing equipment!

Comparing Daler Rowney new 12 x1/2 pan long set compared to the new one you demonstrate. You didnt mention using the twp water dips each side of the palet - I think they are useless too! I much prefer the old style with two brush holder places even though only one was included. I use a shaved down pencil. a small piece of kneeded rubber and an old false eyelash glue bottle filled with masking fluid in the second brush tray. I like paynes grey rather than black. I dont like hookers green, I much prefer veridian because it is bluer and I do a lot of seascapes. I quite agree that the two similar blues are a waste - I much prefer a Prussian blue. Also two similar yellows - what a waste when there are vio;lets and a gorgeous pink in the Daler-Rowney Stable available for painting flowers, and where those colours take a lot of effort/are impossible to reproduce from these mixed colours. Whilst I can pay extra to swap colours, I cant get the benefits of the old style plastic box. I'm thinking of 3D printing a copy of the old one, and I'd love to be able to buy the empty old style pallet box. I'm from the UK. @Daler-Rowney, I hope you are listening? Any Daler-Rowney Aquafine painters with old style boxes who want to upgrade, I'd love your cast offs!

I have this set and I found that the outside of the box is subject to scratching quite easily, if that bothers you, don't get it.

Do you know if standard half pans fit in this pallette if i wanted to switch a colour? Love all your videos - thank you!

I don't think generic half pans would fit as these are a bit smaller, like W&N, Rembrandt or VanGogh paints.

Lukas has the same format of palette, but with a more versatile color selection. If I remember right, it has a magenta and a cyan instead of one of the reds and one of the blues :)

I regret so much, very very bad. Not shiny, not bright. I prefer rembrand or st petersburg white nights.

It's so frustrating to see you keep pushing that brush down in its slot: the solution is that you shouldn't push the widest part of the brush into the holder, but a bit under it. The logic is: The brush can be hold because the widest part is stretching the holder, thus keeping the brush from falling out. 😉🙂
