Since you said that it can read the ambient light does it automatically change settings for you? I sometimes start a project in daylight sitting near a window then sun goes down and I might work a little without light except for the display then switch to rooms lights. Will the settings change as lighting conditions changer will I have to recalibrate as conditions change? Thanks jim

So if you have two monitors will you do the same process to the other two .? Furthermore after calibration will you have to connect it to the laptop for measuring the ambient light.?

hello and congratulations for the video! I wanted to ask you for advice if possible! I own the first version of the spyder X E lite, that is the Spyder 5 Elite, I have it on my mac since 2016, these days I switched to the new imac 24, according to you I have to change the old probe and switch to this new model , or stay with what I own? I don't know if after a few years the probes have to be replaced because they are no longer efficient! Thanks for your time.

Hi, Thanks for the comment. My understanding is that the biggest upgrades usually come in terms of speed of operation and software updates etc - I don't think the physical device changes all that much on terms of how it actually measures light etc. But, I am speculating here - I would personally upgrade every few years (if your budget allows it) but I would also consider contacting DataColor direct and asking them if the physical modules should be upgraded (if there are any changes to the light reading technology) - Sorry, maybe not an 'exact' answer but I hope it helps :)

Hi Ross, hoping you can help. I am able to find plenty of information on the X version, but struggling to find information on if there is any significant performance upgrade between my spyder 4 to the X. Where is struggle most is printing accuracy to my screen, I've done everything like kill off screen brightness immensely to 60 (below recommended levels of 90-120) but still my prints come out darker than screen (store or home printed both). I don't want to buy a printer calibrator as they are extremely expensive and I don't really print enough to justify the costs, but I would at least like the screen to convey similar results. There is a promo on the X right now, expires tonight. Very interested to hear your thoughts.

Hi Marco, to be honest, the biggest benefits are in the ‘speed’ of the process rather than accuracy. However, I always tend to go for the most recent variations of products if I’m starting from scratch. There are so many variables when trying to calibrate a monitor>printer>final output - if you’re printing infrequently, I’d suggest doing several small test prints beforehand and ‘eyeballing’ the final result to your desired preferences. A perfectly calibrated monitor is more important when you’re doing client work or highly sensitive printing, but for the most part, running a few test prints and making adjustments by eye will get you close enough and probably save you a bit of money over buying more expensive gear etc - just my opinion but I hope it helps 👍

I would love your advice! I have been using SpyderX to calibrate my MacBook Pro. However, when I compare the results to the BenQ monitor, they are inaccurate. The Macbook screen has much more contrast, so I can't predict my print outcomes. Is there a way to overcome this issue?

Hi, it's quite difficult as technically, they are different screens. However, the Spyder has a feature to help you match monitors (I think it's called studio mode or something, may be worth a Google!) and that is intended to help you pair monitors - but again, I think the assumption is they are the same brand/model. Other than that, I would literally 'eyeball' it and get it as close as you can that way, or at least something you know is comfortable for you. Other than that, search for some forums/Reddit, there will be plenty of advice out there. Good Luck!

Is the monitor in a particular bright/dark room in the house? It reads the ambient light falling on the monitor when calibrating which can have a significant effect on the final output

@@theunkownmr.562 that will have an effect on the reading, ideal lighting conditions for editing are flat light, like a cloudy day with the curtains open, that way there is enough adds ambient light without it being too bright or dark - if the room is too dark, the calibration tries to account for this and will commonly ‘warm’ up the colours to combat the cooler tones/blue light etc

  • @RossJukesPhotography

oliver Lison the main benefit is the speed of the calibration, though we are only talking a minute or two here and there. Also, the ‘accuracy’ of the readings can always be improved and the software but... if it isn’t causing you any issues and it’s working for you, no need to upgrade 👍

After you calibrate you viewing screen and get it spot on accurate, what guarentee do you have that your printer can or will reproduce what you see on your viewing screen? I "DON'T" ask this to be facetious or doubtful, I am genuinely interested.

  • @RossJukesPhotography

Great question, you can print printer calibration profiles (ICC) which (in theory) should match to the colours that you see on screens, this gets very complex and can take many attempts to perfect. However, I've basically learnt to just use a professional lab for all of my printing and let the experts handle it - it would be great having complete control over process but it just gets too expensive doing test prints, re-calibrating and then doing more tests! It's more beneficial having a calibrated monitor for sharing online content, but even then, there's no accounting for the viewers (probably uncalibrated) screen.... Hope this helps :)

@@Goldchucker1 ha! You’re probably not too far wrong but the idea behind it sounds plausible! It’s very much like high end audio gear though, so much depends on the room you’re in, the time of day, lighting conditions, you’re own eye fatigue etc. but at least we like to believe we’re doing all we can to produce the best possible images! Best of luck with it all!

im using spyder5, is the spyder x is a good upgrade from the newest monitor today? im not getting P3 as advertised by the monitor manufacturer. im getting 85% as 95% advertised by the manufacturer im not sure if this is just a manufacturing defect or upgrading to spyder x will accurately measure my display

The menu benefits of the upgrade would be the speed of the actual calibration. I think there would be some gains in accuracy but may be worth contacting them just to see if they think it’s a manufacturing defect

@@RossJukesPhotography using the spyderx elite it seems that my monitor does not take 2.2 Gamma right so i have to set it to 2.5 instead and crank my white balance to at least 6700k and fine tune the monitor based on the reviews i got over the internet, and i got 91% P3 , finally .and over 100%SRGB. im not sure or i cant remember if my spyder 5 PRO was able to let me modify this values or just a standard preset. This search for a good calibration took me a while to figure out and money to burn haha.
