Love your videos I’m trying to make my own pallet But having a hard time deciding which colors and Which brands to use Any recommendations and which colors to start out with?

$24 is a great price for three tubes, I agree. I bought the secondary set because I wanted those colors to paint with, without thought of mixing them, and it was a good price for colors I wanted to pick up. I really appreciate your video. Thank you!

I have and love these paints. The vibrancy is not coming across as well as usual.... but another wonderful review! By the way... i love the neutrals you mixed with the secondary pigments. I'm. not surprised they arent your favs as I've noticed you seem to prefer brighter, clearer colors in your work.... which I just love :)

Great colours ... thanks for this..i have a few of daniel smiths, but in uk they are expensive. I paid 25 for just 5 x 5ml. ...however i will likely slowly buy the larger tubes once i know which are my favourites....your review really helps. Thanks 🧡🧡🧡 burnt orange ...wow

Nice to see your live and immediate reaction to colors that are new to you. I really like the orange color you got from Hansa Yellow and Perylene Red. It looked like the various colors of a warm, golden sunset. ^_^ The Undersea Green does look weird in contrast to the rest of the sketch. I know it's not the case, but it looks almost as if that section was painted on a different type of paper. And that circular area of blueish green is definitely distracting. It draws my eyes away from the rest of the sketch, becomes sort of a secondary focal point. By the way, congratulations on now actually being at over 50000 subscribers. Your work and effort into your channel has definitely paid off and the number consistently keeps going up. ^_^ Very very rarely see any dislikes on any of your videos. Statistically speaking, your approval rating is quite high and your channel is growing consistently.

Is it just me, or do others hate seeing the granulating blue+orange effect from french ultramarine and perylene red? It seems even worse when you add a bit of the hansa yellow for mixing earth tones.

Very interesting Teoh. I have just bought some Maimeri colours but they are rather expensive. Will see if I can get the Daniel Smith ones here in Germany. Might be expensive with customs duty.

Maimeri is indeed very pricey. I wonder if they are significantly better compared to other brands.

I'm currently dealing with the Dilemma of watercolor. I have 26 Winsor & Newton Pro colors. As I run out of one color, I will replace it with a Daniel Smith. But I also want to really try the painter's palette which means oh, that I will be limited to 12 colors. Also side note, I really like watching your videos, it helps me a lot in my journey to become a better watercolor artist.

WN quality is very similar to DS. No much reason to switch unless DS is cheaper or there are certain colours you want.

@@teohyc I feel like there's a limited color range with Winsor and Newton in comparison to Daniel Smith. I will definitely transition over time. And might just end up with a half and half palette.

I'm sorry if I missed this, but what kind of paper did you use? Sometimes when I paint on different paper the results vary a lot, though it usually isn't that much of a difference. I am new to watercolor, so forgive me for asking it doesn't affect anything. Your reviews are always so detailed and helpful, thank you!

The quality of paper is more important than the quality of the paint or brushes. Arches cold press is best. It allows for good flow of the water/paint across the surface. You need that for all those beautiful watercolor effects. You can manage with student quality (not children's) brushes and paints, but never use less than professional quality paper. Trust me. That is the one thing that changed everything when I was beginning.

What second set of primary colors would you recommended getting?

Was the DS tube sealed?

I really want to try Daniel Smith but I have so much Shinhan I can't get anymore right now!!

I'm about to start with watercolors, a holbein x24 is about to arrive but i'm already getting obsessed with getting this: daniel smith set of essentials + daniel smith primatek set. The first set for the mixes and the second for the granulation stuff! Any thoughts about the primatek? (i'm asking everybody)

Start with your 24 colours first before buying too much paint. The mixes you can get with the Daniel Smith Essentials set can be achieved with the Holbein too. You can get more colours in the future when you feel like it. Primatek colours are mostly granulating colours.

I use 37 ml tubes of American Journey from Cheap Joe's online. They don't disperse much, so I improve the flow by adding ox gall. That is the additive the manufacturers use. You can add a little to the water you brush onto the paper for your wet into wet washes. Your brush strokes will merge and disappear. But, sometimes we want the brush strokes for the structure or texture they add. Then, don't add the ox gall liquid, and the AJ paint will mostly stay where you put it. That's handy for making leaves with lots of little X's. You may want them soft, but don't want them to all merge together into a giant blob. Of course you can add ox gall with water in the mixing wells on your palate to adjust the paint flow for the effect you want. I love DS, but the cost is crazy, and now that I know how to use ox gall, I love AJ just as much. Also, to save cost, start with a limited palate of easier to mix hues: lemon yellow, cobalt blue, quinacridone red, raw umber and black. You can make tolerable secondaries and tertiaries with those for yourself. Later, when you can afford to, buy a cold and a warm hue of each primary for truly versatile color mixing. Don't waste money on convenience colors you can make yourself. Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

I have compared them to the price I would have to pay for Daniel Smith watercolours and they are slightly cheaper for me. They are really fantatic watercolours - rich and creamy with lovely transparency. Only own 5 tubes though!!lol

+bastet469 We speak different languages here depending on our race. So we speak English (everyone), Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Singaporean refers to people born here.

Teoh, is it bad that I dislike granulation and therefore despise french ultramarine? I kinda feel guilty when you praise it for its granulation and transparency, but it doesn't do it for me.. I always use some other blue, but I think I should just embrace it and experiment with it more

Yellow Ochre is usually opaque (Daniel Smith's version is transparent for some reason). To me, Yellow Ochre is a bit muted so it's a colour that can be used from the tube straightaway even without mixing and the colour won't be as glaring or out of place. It's slightly warmer and will mix to very nice orange, and is very easy to mix a skin tone when added with some warm red. dibujo con luis Some waterproof inks are heavily pigmented and may not flow well. If yours is an India ink type, you should not use that in a fountain pen as it may clog the pen. Other waterproof inks that safer are the Noodlers Bulletproof Black ink, Sailor KiwaGuro, de Atramentis Document ink

the woman at my local artstore said that if you empty tubes into pans and you let them dry, they dont act the same, they wont pick up pigment as nice, have you noticed this?

+Adriaan van Pijkeren Some colours don't re-wet as well or are more difficult to dissolve after they dry. But when you dissolve them, the look is not going to be different. Main advantage of tube is they are easy to dissolve and can create large and intensive mixtures easier.

Yeaahhh this "information" is quoted by Winsor & Newton representatives frequently, and they also recommend that you throw away paint squeezed from tubes immediately after each and every session! Considering that W&N pans are many times more expensive than the tubes, this is a rather convenient line for them to say. This question has come up on WetCanvas many times, and the artists who've painted with dried pan colors from tubes have never noticed a difference from paint straight from the tube. This includes artists with galleries, teaching artists, and long-time hobby artists. I especially love it when a newbie asks a W&N rep which is right, and the rep tut-tuts over the obviously illogical argumentative artists who insist from experience differently to the company line, and frame the "dry tube colors are actually fine from my experience" opinion holders as "trolls" who are "stressing out" the newbie with their impertinence. Yeah I really don't trust W&N when it comes to this aspect.

That's why I won't go near W&N they lost my potential business because they seems so greedy.

True primaries in pigmemts are cyan (pthalo blue geen shade for DS) hansa yellow light and quinacridone pink (magenta) is my understanding - basic color theory-subtractive - additive color primaries (light) would be red yellow and blue

I would say pr 122 is a beter pigment voor magenta. I like the red blue yellow traid better because of temperature you can regulate,but I also always have a magenta on my palette.

It's more economical to buy secondary colors that you use a lot than to mix them. It save a LOT of paint and It make painting faster.

Larger tubes of paint cost less per ml of paint. Sometimes, I can save money by mixing the colors I need from large tubes of primaries, instead of buying and shipping yet another little tube of convenience color. Also, I can get more interesting color variances by letting some of the mixing happen on the paper.

cobalt blue is better in watercolor. ultramarine always creates a muddy mixture.

Mostly you are right. I love cobalt blue. In general, I like to keep a warm and a cold hue of each primary on my palate to make the most intense secondaries. Since tertiary colors are difficult to mix correctly on the paper, I keep some single pigment browns and neutrals on my palate too. Iron oxides are cheap, and come in many colors. They help my landscapes look less like plastic and more natural.
