The higher seating position is great for shorter people. My wife is short and we have to exclude many vehicles because she can't find a good seating position. Something that is worthwhile to consider when making car reviews. A person that is 1.55 would love this seating position.

All new cars are designed to accommodate the top 95 per cent of people. Unless she is an NBA player or has genuine dwarfism, she can be accommodated. Your wife, probably doesn't have the seat and steering wheel adjusted correctly. Start with each foot on each pedal and knees bent, hands at 9 and 3, shoulders on the seatback.

You said you tried to range test the car by driving from Sydney to the Central Coast - "about 150 or so kms". Its about 140km from Sydney to Newcastle (with the Central Coast in the middle), so your distance makes no sense. But even at 150kms you almost ran out of range? My 1st version MG ZS EV (with a listed 263kms range) does Sydney to Newcastle with 80-100kms of range remaining. Its honestly hard to believe that a 50KWh battery in a brand new more efficient vehicle can barely do 150kms.

You would think with something so important they would... test more. So the detail is he setout with the car saying 46% 140km, and but it ran out at 89km. And he writes this off to 'temperature' in the middle of spring... you would think something this significant he would test more. What is even the point of reviews like this? They are at best surface level scratch tests of the car and nothing you can't learn from doing a test drive.

After watching the video I think he meant around 150 km each way so probably started to run low on the return journey. Having said that a so called professional reviewer should not be relying on the guesometer but should be monitoring the battery state of charge to estimate remaining range. Schoolboy error there and kind of invalidates anything he claims to know about the car under review

The game changer will be the collapse of the electricity network. Get an electrician to give you a price of upgrading your home electrical system. If you can afford that, it will only work until a few other people try to upgrade also and then the network will drop out. You would be better to invest in copper mining

The reasons this car will sell against the BYD, is the better warranty, and the better interior. The current BYD importer has made an absolute hash of the introduction of the new car, gutted the warranty, doubled the No. of services required... People are cancelling orders for BYD, and this will directly benefit MG. Roll-on the MG4!

In New Zealand after the Clean Car Rebate the base Excite model is NZ$42K. It has two year servicing intervals and a 7 year warrantee. We got one in October 2022 and can get up to 300km on a full charge. The smallest battery BYD Atto 3 is a better car but costs another NZ $6K.

Hi David, You been using the car for almost 7 months now, how is the experience? I'm planning to get one & in NZ, MG has another offer of $2k on top of the clean car rebate. I've been waiting for a Trophy Long Range since last year (Black Friday) I've just about given up. Since ordering I've purchased a Golf eTSI and I'm tempted to stick with that and cancel the MG :(

In my eyes you're buying an EV, a backup battery for your home power supply (once you get an electrician to modify your circuit to do this) and a portable charger for your devices and other powered contraptions. It's a steal for the price.

The battery is LFP, that’s the most important aspect, the reviewer missed

I'd love to know many things that these reviews don't cover. How easy to access parts, if an accident occurs? How many service centres are available to folk, not living in major cities? What are some of the technical set ups, with the battery etc.

wdym the buttons don't adjust the "laggy climate control", you toggle it up to raise the temp and toggle it down to lower it I just test drove this car

What was that about A/C charger and 4 hours to a full charge? Can I do it at home? I have ordered mine in April, but still waiting for the phone to ring.

it can do 7.2kw single phase or 11kw 3 phase, so a full charge from empry to full will be around 6.5hrs on single phase or 4.5 hrs with three phase just depends on how many phases you have at available at home

For a 7.2kw charger, you need to get this installed in your garage by an electrician/technician and hooked into a dedicated RCD on your mains board. They run to a couple of grand upwards in NZ, likely similar in Oz. You can also get a 4kw charger that plugs into a caravan socket for a couple of hundred bucks, which is what I bought as I already have one of these outlets on my house, but they're also not expensive to wire up by your sparky either. And the bonus is that you can then use any campground as an additional potential charging station.

...for a rough estimate of the charging time, just divide the number of kw/hrs you need to top up by the charge rate of your charger. So if your battery is depleted by 21kwhr, it will take around 3 hours to top that up with a 7kw charger (21 / 7). You can also charge straight out of a normal 3-pin plug on your house, which is what the standard cable that comes with the car does, this charges at a little under 2kw, so would take 11 hours to recharge that 21kwhr depletion. So unless you're only driving about as far as you could walk instead, you'll need one of the larger capacity chargers installed.

Nice find. I’ve held off buying. It’s now late ‘23. Enough feedback from users who bought earlier to be confident. At 20,000km/yr and a $20,000 premium over an ice powered similar car doing 5L/100km, that’s $2,100/year fuel saving. Minus the ev charging. assuming 8c/kw.hr off peak rate, and the 17.1kw.hr /100 km consumption nominated for the mg ev, electricity costs will be $274/20,000km. This assumes you can charge at home using the cheapest rate currently available. Sometimes ppl argue they can charge for free from solar, only works if your car is at home during day - unlikely for most. charging from solar home batteries has different cost structure due to having to size home battery to cover the ev and house use. Standard electricity rate is now around 26c/kw.hr or 20c/kw.hr off peak. Charging away from home varies widely, 40-45c/kw.hr is common today. If used exclusively, at 20,000km/yr that becomes $1368/yr, vs the $2100/yr for fuel at current prices. There might be some circumstances where you can charge your ev for free during the day due to the solar power duck curve - excess solar during middle of day. Dependent on car at home or an ev friendly employer. So the ability to charge your ev cheaply is very significant. So annual savings will be $1826. Factor in ice maintenance costs - say double the fuel costs and the numbers become even more favourable. The big catch will be ev road tax, currently 8c/km in some states and likely to be adopted by other states in coming years. Would be nice if the electric car were reviwed by somone with an elec/engg background. Reuglar petrolhead knowledge does not just transfer over to electric. Whole different ball game.

MG looks better on the inside than BYD but looks poor on the outside. I like the look of BYD outside minus the crap Tyres that car comes with. Obviously, this is subjective, but I think most would agree.

I've driven both the MG and the BYD...yes, the BYD is probably a wee bit slicker on the outside, but the 2022 MG isn't that bad really...TBH a car is a car and gets you from A to B and me personally I don't really give a rats ass how it looks as long as its comfortable and fulfils various other functional criteria I need for a specific vehicle. However inside, the BYD is, IMHO, rather hideous. The styling and little 'fun' tweaks simply makes the car a) quickly dated, b) a bitch to keep clean, and c) appealing to only a portion of the potential market. For me I do not like it at all, even though I did like the BYD to drive. But the BYD is still a little more expensive than the MG and I don't think that there is anything it has to offer that would overcome the dislike I have of the interior.

@@mrcorbel If you like the BYD and it fits the purpose you need, then by all means get it. I only had issue with that specific model and that was purely personal taste, mixed in with the specific cost-benefit calculations I made for my own situation. For me it was an economic decision over and above minimum functional requirements, with wants not factoring in at all. You may have other priorities which you need to be happy with. Basically, if it ticks your boxes, then it's a good decision.

Does it loose speed and performance going up and down steep hills

Yes, like any vehicle going up a hill but general performance is better than petrol or diesel due to better torque electric motors deliver. 👍

I am watching a presentation about the MG-EV. Why is the car in the background and out of focus, while the presenter is in the foreground and in focus, at 2:55? From 80% charged to 20% charged what is its travel range? will there be a recharge station within few kilometres before 10% of battery charge is left? The Achilles heal of current EVs is driving range and recharge time plus limited infrastructure of recharge stations.

This car’s 51kwh battery is LFP so no need to go from 20 to 80, you can use 100% of the range as Ferro phosphate doesn’t degrade like that.

This is a great EV if you want an affordable SUV EV. Otherwise you are up in the 60k bracket with Hyundai Kona, Ioniq 5 and Tesla Model Y.

Nice review - you just need to learn how to pronounce "attributes". 😉

Don't forget to add $2300 for the servicing charges. Tesla is less than $1400. Byd is $2400

In my bias opinion, only based on the ICE version. The fit and finish will be shité. The panel gaps inside and out, will be inconsistent at best. The paint job will be patchy in parts. Yes, the car will be endowed with heaps of tech, which had, not enough R & D, spent on it. So not quite right and will throw up error codes and check engine lights. Don’t get me started on the uncomfortable fake leather seats!

ZS is an EV FWD SUV not 4WD wagon even dear prices went up by inflation despite low running cost and no emissions can not have the ability to tow a caravan, drive distance could run out of batteries and splash through shallow pond might soak electric motors rendered malfunction, did it comes with a rear drum brake since Mazda Tribute?; here's a word of advice then catch the bus very cheaper or literally go fly a kite much safer.

It lacks range, true fast charging and feels a bit too heavy.

It's crazy to me that this is the cheapest EV in Australia but the website doesn't say the price at all.

No BYD is a separate company. Currently one of the largest manufacturers of EV's in the world. Mostly trucks, busses and machinery but moving quickly into cars.

MG have huge reliability problems. Rusty chassis, faulty engine, paint peeling off… buyer beware.

the interior of this car looks boring and cheap, very much like an plastic japanese/korean ICE car. I think atto3 is much more appealing.

i guess it's subjective. To me, it feels like the MG's interior is nicer as it is sober, classier yet sportier, whereas the BYD's interior, while certainly original, tries too hard and ends up all over the place in style, even looks kind of cheap to my eyes. I like BYD's screen UI/size/position much more though

After it all crashes then you invest. Get the stuff no one wants for dirt cheap. Then your losses are minimal if things don’t pick up. Everyday as food goes up your money is worth less. It’s good now to have a lot of precious metals on hand. The value is skyrocketing.

have you been in China? I am from HK and I can definitely tell you majority of the people in China love their Government so much, definitely more than Aussie loving their Govt. You know why? communist party care their people, be wise, dont trust Trump and Biden, those US politician are liars!!

Any credible environmentalist would steer clear of this concept. The mining required to build them, then the strain they place on the grid during their service life renders them just as bad as ice cars. Not to mention that many are sourced from China:- a nation committing genocide and harvesting organs, as well as having shocking environmental regulations. The issue is not how a car is propelled, but the sheer number of them. There are people in big cities with cars who literally just don't need to own them. If you wish to make a genuine difference to global emissions..........just ride a bike, catch a train or, shock, horror..........try walking! 🚶🚴

Most of the load on the grid is from home charging. Home charging is done off-peak (at least if electricity suppliers provide Time Of Use $/kWh rates). And remember that somehow we managed to survive the burgeoning use of home air-conditioning which uses about the same daily amount of energy as an EV, but does so at peak times.
