Just bought a second hand one, and honestly this is a most underestimated peace of DJ hardware ever. I was seeking solution for my b-setup, something light with full Serato feauters, easy to handle - and thats it! USB powered is a big plus when you are mobile, and it really works amazing. Sound is inline with flagship controllers. I think that Akai has a lot more tosay on DJ controller market, hope that they will continue with great work!

@DigitalDJTips Couple of questions before I commit to buying one ! 1: to use through mode do I need to pay for the upgrade to dvs?. 2:out of interest could I use ch1 in through-mode i/e playing a turntable or cdj on ch1 whilst ch2 is playing from Serato. and finally if I later get the AFX can it, along with the AMX be run from a usb hub at the same time ? I would like to see someone use the Akai AMX and Serato instant doubles with a Pioneer XDJ700 with Serato timecode on USB stick and a Reloop Neon pad controller. Alternatively to the Pioneer, a Reloop Spin or Numark PT-01 Scratch running timecode control vinyl ... Demo please!!!

Informative video. Those look like the Tannoy Reveal 402 monitors on the desk. Was the sound in this video coming from those? if so I'm pretty impressed with that bass response from a 4" driver. Where was the mic placement?

I was realy amazed when they released this unit, Akai realy nailed that one ! Nice review ! One question though, why was it released by Akai and not by Numark since it's the same brand ? Akai isn't realy into "real djing"

I'm thinking about switching from traktor to serato. I got two technics sl1200. Thinking about buying a second hand behringer ddm4000 and thought the AFX would be a nice addition next to this mixer for cueing, looping, effects, library search etc. Is this setup possible with the behringer ddm 4000, the AFX as a soundcard for serato and buying the DVS expansion pack to get the technics working??

Hi Phil, I came across this article while researching for an upgrade! I have a DDJ SX was is still super trust worthy. I was going to upgrade to a SX2 or SX3 so I can add DVS but if I buy this can I run it either stand-alone and also via my SX so it is like a SX with DVS added? Hello Phil. Having the Akai AMX connected to your computer used as a cheap Serato certified audio interface whilst simultaneously having a non-Serato certified mixer like the NI Traktor Kontrol Z2 midi-mapped to use Serato give you Serato DVS functionality? Obviously the inputs and outputs of Serato DJ will need to be routed correctly. Pros and cons vs Denon DS1 or Rane Serato audio interfaces??? Thanks again for your video, Cheers!!!

Digital DJ Tips yes i figured that out as i also own a denon ds1 which comes dvs enabled, and with it u can access thru mode. So thanks for confirming my thoughts.

One question: I like to use the dvs system to add scratches to my beats. But I am confused about the wiring. If I have my beat in ablleton and like to record some scratches on top, what do I have to do? Does the output of the amx go into my audio interface? And: Which soundcard to I select as the systems soundcard when I want to record it in Ableton?

The output of your AMX goes to your sound card, which you then select in Ableton Live :)

Now my question is if you already own a serato controller like ddjsx that comes with the serato software do I have to purchase the $100 add on to use the DVS portion of this device?

yes, $99. honestly I am bout to sell my amx & afx set i originally purchase to help my son build his skills.If you're a pro it's not worthy.. if'its for practice or uplift your skills its worth purchasing.

Is it possible to use the akai pro amx with only one vinyl turntable (with a regular vinyl on) and making transitions between the vinyl tunes and tunes on your computer? Sorry for the english i'm franch and not sure about my sentence ^^

+Dabe1996 Yeah I believe it is. I don't have one yet, but from what I understand, you would play your vinyl record on the turntable through Serato (like he did in this video), and then the other digital deck on screen can use digital audio from your PC.

I used this publicly for the first time last friday...to get over the problem of the unit not having enough controls I used it like this: akai as sound card and DVS controller (used with timecoded vinyl) I also used traditional vinyl playing as line in when I fancied playing normal vinyl records (my software is Virtual DJ 2018); hercules djcontrol jogvision as a secondary controller. The Akai was plugged into my USB 3 port on my laptop, and the Hercules was plugged into the other USB 2 port. Set up time less than 10 mins. Only problem was that playing traditional vinyl, the gain in VDJ had to be turned up to full for LP's and 3/4s for singles, which I could do from the AKAI using the gain potsit has: the Hercules doesn't have gain pots.. But all easy to work out and great fun. Problems encountered: 0 Fun encountered 10. Having already got the license for VDJ2018 pro, all I had to buy was VDJ timecoded vinyl ($35), although VDJ 2018 works with all makes of control vinyl, and the AKAI cost 205€. I got the recommendation for the AKAI from the Digital DJ Tips web site. Cheers guys

Okay, so can you confirm something. At the beginning of the video you mentioned that this unit didn't work like a conventional mixer. However, it seems like "through mode" via Serato does emulate this function. Is this correct?

That's doable. As long is it passes through the analogue audio (RCA ouput) from the media player to the main output/amp&speakers I'll consider this. Looking for a small mixer to transport with me for air travel.

I bought the AMX on purpose just to use this “All-in-one” Traktor mapping: 4x decks, 6x hot cues, Loops, 5x insta-FX pages, “super cross fader”. So, I have my turntable (LP120) plugged into the Akai mixer input, and the mixer plugged by USB to my PC, as well as RCA to my speakers. I don't have the Serato upgrade. When I open Serato, I can see my iTunes music, but I can't hear regular vinyl from my turntable. Do I need to buy the $100 upgrade just to hear the vinyl input?

+kendo512 It needs to be set to "thru" mode in the Serato DJ software for regular vinyl to work - you may have to get the DVS expansion pack for it to work correctly (not entirely sure on this one). Ok, simple question, I'm obviously overlooking it, but I have the AMX, purchased the expansion pack,damn.....I have the SL3, going back to my tech 1200s, so I thought I've done everthing I'm suppose to do, but when the AMX is connected to my MAC I have internal control, but no control of my turntables, I can hear the music through headphones and speakers,ABS, REL, modes are controlled thru the AMX, but no vinyl control........can somebody give me some pointers please, I've got a gig next month, trying to stay ahead of the game, but wrkng 2JOBS I dont have a lot of free time to trobleshoot....so can ya help me?......

Do you mean real vinyl (not dvs)? It's a pretty basic setup, RCA from the turntables to the mixer, usb to serato, rca out to the speakers from the mixer,

So after you purchase the additional $100 DVS expansion, you also have to burn timecode CD's to use with CDJs??

+Hugh Zhang It's not a standalone mixer, and needs Serato DJ to work - that said, you can use it to mix, play, and cue your music within the software without the need for turntable, but it's also a DVS interface that will allow you to mix with CDJs or turntables if you prefer.

how does the controller detect the vinyl speed? by pitch sound?

+Matthew Buggs The AMX isn't a standalone mixer - it needs a computer to work (connected via USB) - for any external sources to work, you'll need to have Serato DJ running and set to "Thru" mode

How does playing real vinyl sound? I don’t get how it can support the sound. My pioneer controller sx2 makes my real vinyl sound horribly flat.

It's been quite some time since we've used this, I think you're unlikely to be impressed by the vinyl sound through this - it's really designed for DVS

@@digitaldjtips I actually just bought it, and have been testing it out today with real vinyl, and i have to say, that i am very impressed with the sound quality of the phono preamps with this mixer/ controller. in fact it sounds better than the Pioneer DJM 250mk2. Of course it's not on the same level as an Allen & HEath Xone mixer, but having said that, for the price and the fact that it has better sound quality than some budget mixers, you can't fault with it.

+Mark Smith You can do two things with CDJs and the Akai: 1) Use them as DVS (and purchase the Serato DJ DVS expansion) or 2) Use them as regular, but you'll still have to set it to "thru" mode and run it through the software (the Akai isn't standalone, it still requires being hooked up to your laptop running through the software) Check out our full article here that explains it: www.digitaldjtips.com/2014/12/review-video-akai-amx-controller/

This is why Serato has its major down fall it needs hardware plugged in. If not it's basically iTunes. Traktor 4 life because it saved my life!

and yes this thing is almost totally unusable without the DVS upgrade.

THERE IS NO MONITOR OUTPUT for DJ Monitor. Only Main out.

My biggest issue with serato hardware is that they always try to flex with stupid features and deny you the essentials. There is no tempo reset, or key lock or slip mode yet they give you flip... yay

minni inno is like €100 serato licence is next €115 this unit is a bargain and you cant have better unit as backup in serato. fuck it ill probably buy it if for inno only. #CrispAsFuck
