REVIEW: $462 China Eastern Airlines Flight from Chicago to Singapore

Checkout my video of things to do while in Singapore: • Make the Most of 3 Day...
*****UPDATE March 5th, 2017: I see that China Eastern Airlines has updated their website and it appears to be much more presentable and functional than it was when I made this video. However, I cannot speak for how it performs when booking, selecting seats, etc., since I do not have a current reservation with them.
In this video I discuss my experience aboard China Eastern Airline's
I flew on China Eastern Airlines from Chicago (O'hare) to Singapore Changi airport via Shanghai in November 2016. Most of this review discusses their new 777-300ER aircraft, but I did fly aboard an Airbus A330-200 from Shanghai Pudong to Singapore.
Specific topics discussed include:
-Air France/KLM lounge at Chicago O'Hare international airport
-China Eastern Lounge at Shanghai Pudong Airport
-Inflight mean service
-Carry-on luggage
-Inflight Wifi
-The boarding process
-Inflight entertainment
-Cellphone policy
Overall, I was very pleased with China Eastern Airlines. The cost of my ticket was $462 USD roundtrip and included free checked luggage and complimentary lounge access (because of my status held with Delta Air lines and both airlines being members of Skyteam). However, because the ticket was so cheap, not every leg was eligible to accrue Skymiles with Delta, which was disappointing (also, what kind of team spirit is that?!).
I was slightly terrified prior to beginning this journey because of some reviews I had read on Yelp, but I found many of the issues that people were complaining about were more related to delays and lost luggage or poor service aboard their flight. I was pleasantly surprised to find the crew to be very professional and polite during every leg of my journey.
Besides some minor issues (minor to me) such as inflight entertainment being glitchy, inflight wifi not working very well, flight attendants unplugging USB and headphone cables without asking you prior to landing, and the boarding process being convoluted, I had a very pleasant journey. Also, you should know that their website behaves as if it is the 1990s and is essentially unusable for many tasks that would seem routine for any other airline (changing your ticket, ordering a special meal, etc.). All their website is able to do is to check that your ticket is valid and, if you are lucky, change your seat (I had to access the Chinese version of their website in order to do this and use google chrome to translate the web page).

U mentioned about carry on weight was 11lb = 5kg, so I checked on the china eastern airline website, it said carry on allows 22 lb= 11 kg. Just wondering which one are correct ? Cus I'm going to travel within less than 2 weeks.

Couldn't agree more. I've flown about 6 different airlines from California to Manila in the last 15 years. All were just fine, pleasant, comfortable UNTIL I used United. Absolutely unbearably AWFUL! Only airline that crosses the Pacific with seats that have the little video entertainment screens removed from the seatbacks, no food unless you want to buy the $13.00 cheeseburgers being hawked by the captain, the 777 I flew had the most seats squished in of any Triple Seven I've ever flown. I Love this plane, but United put the maximum number of seats possible (the 777 carries from 280 to about 400 possible passengers) and made a usually comfortable flight miserable. EVERY other passenger was as P.O.'d and disgusted as I was. United is worse than any airline I've ever flown, and should hang their heads in shame.

The Shanghai airport is modern and clean with many restaurants. If your layover is long and you have a proper visa you might even be able to have a trip to the city center, which many people enjoyed... you can search KZread for "Shanghai Layover" to find out. Shanghai is beautiful and safe.

I've always seen that deal from LAX to Singapore but I've always resisted due to the stopover. I've done the route twice, once for $760 RT on JAL in Nov 2015 and the second for $495 RT on Singapore Airlines (I upgraded on the return flight for $95 to a bulkhead seat, worth it!) in April 2017. I would still rather pay more for a direct flight than dealing with this airline and having to do a stopover.

I was going through their baggage allowance page which says Economy Class traveler can carry 2 pieces of luggage 23 kgs per piece which is understandable but I couldn't understand the dimensions which says 'less than 158CMS [L*B*H} . Is it possible to know what does that mean and if there anyone who knows more about dimensions like in inches or height , Cause i don't wanna end up buying wrong trolley bags for my journey. Please reply , thanks

I am not chinese or American so I can be honest. It was nice to hear this American guy really didn't complain as many Americans complain on KZread A Lot about overseas airlines...........I haven't been on China Eastern yet but at least they appear to provide a hot meal.........Many years ago I flew a lot around America with an Airline which no longer exists. One time I remember the flight attendent handing out a roll in a brown paper bag with some ham in it. No butter or margarine, No salad.........NOTHING just 1 roll with i slice of ham in the roll handed to us in a brown paper bag. So Americans can't really complain about other countries flights when this is the meals U get on theirs.

You can fly Chinese based airlines and take your own risks. I would suggest that you do not use them if you expect them to arrive on time for a connecting flight, even within their own airline. If you are flying directly to China only, they will get you there eventually. But don't expect any customer service by either phone or internet. The prices are often very good, but nothing makes up for missing a connecting flight as I did, and being stuck in an airport for a 10 hour wait, then of course losing my connecting flight back to my city when I hit the U.S. You truly do get what you pay for. So don't expect the standards of Japan Airlines, Korean Air, All Nippon Airways, Asiana, or any other major carrier across the Pacific. Expect the minimum, and be ready for some very bad times when things don't go as scheduled. p.s. China Eastern is rated as the 8th worst airline in the world, with a mediocre 53% on time rating. Caveat emptor!

I only flew with china eastern on domestic routes like beijing to shanghai or beijing to hangzhou. I think I flew with them 4 times already and I got delayed twice. What I really don't like is at beijing airport, which is the hub for airchina and hainan, china eastern always uses shuttle bus to board instead of jet bridge.

The issue is that the military takes control of the ATC 90% of the time and doesn't have a separate system, and so since the airspace is getting larger, they need to have a separate system. To prevent the delays, fly first thing in the morning or get on flights with international traffic (ones that continue to an international destination). You also need to try XiamenAir, who are great and are almost at the same level of Hainan, and they have flights from New York, LA, and Seattle.

Lena, did you fly international? I'm cautious about China Eastern because I lost luggage and had em damaged when I flew Air China and Hainan. Although Hainan customer service and planes are better than Air China.

I purchase RT ticket to visit my family in the Philippines. Purchase a ticket protection too just in case something happened and cannot do the trip. Unfortunately, the war has started and there is a NO travel advisory from Manila US Embassy to Mindanao. I have to ask the Airline to refund my tickets, worth $890.00. Ticket protection is worthless, didn’t help me to get my money back, instead there was a lot of deductions that end up of giving me back $225.00 Wow, never again. It is not my fault that I cannot travel, but still I feel that I am being scam on this airline.

If the cabin manager finds out that there are passengers using cellphones on board, the FA on duty would be penalized. That's why they enforce this rule so strictly. The truth is, their cellphones are almost all on during the flight....

For that price I can't complain about the food or the amenities. I just hope they don't skimp on the stuff you can't see like the regular maintenance of the aircraft.
