Review: 2024 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Signature - Better with Age

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I spend a week with the 2024 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Signature to see how the CX-5 is holding up after 6 years on the market. Thanks to a refresh in 2022, the CX-5 continues to be my favorite compact crossover, with great tech and more luxury than the other competitors while amazingly coming in with one of the lowest prices in the segment, making the value proposition very strong. What do you think about the 2024 CX-5? Huge thanks to Mazda for providing this vehicle to review.

My girlfriend recently traded in her 2022 Audi Q5 she was leasing to buy one of these. We compared them side by side in the lot and the similarities are surprising. Physically, they're almost exactly the same size (inch or two in some areas). They also have the same features and similar drivetrain setup (turbo 4, AWD). In fact the cx5 offered cooled seats and rear heated seats, not found in her Audi. The volume knob placement was extremely similar to the q5, and cabin noise was about the same. I think the drivetrain and some features in the Audi were a bit fancier, but costing ~$10k less than the Audi q5, the mazda is a really competitive deal.

Had my 2023 turbo for 10 months. It’s really good. Using highest octane premium which overcomes a slight acceleration lag I was experiencing on standard. Don’t bother using sport mode as all it does is hold it in a higher gear. I’ve made a few tweaks, my latest is to glue a 1 inch thick piece of foam plus carpet to the drivers foot rest. It has made it far more comfy to have that rather than your foot pushing on the un padded foot rest.

It’s amazing to see someone is reading your mind! Well, I admit I must have gone overboard when I bought 2024 Mazda3 Turbo AWD Sedan, because for the same price you can get N/A mid-trim CX-5, but regardless Mazda is every day, all day choice for me (literally) when it comes to build quality, sporty handling, superb interior and bulletproof transmission. Oh yes, I don’t regret my purchase with Mazda3, it puts a smile on my face even when I am not in the mood. That’s how I purchased my 2nd Mazda, and no it’s not CX-5, it’s CX-30 😁⚡️

Matt, great review I think you covered everything very well, I am not a SUV or crossover fan, but I told you this when your sister bought a CX-5. Mazda I feel does SUVs and crossovers the best, like you said timeless style, and excellent fit and finish inside and out. great size, "sporty" easy to maneuver. true six speed automatic, that shifts very well, they nailed it. Great stereo. Also, you said an excellent point, no goofy black plastic cladding on the sides. I have driven the normal naturally aspirated four cylinder version and I feel it is good enough for like 95 percent of people, and obviously the naturally aspirated four will be the more reliable choice if keeping long term. I haven't heard of issues with Mazda's turbo set up in these, but just giving my thoughts. I wish the new CX-90 used a this simple six speed, this transmission feels smoother and better in my opinion, then the 8 speed transmission in the CX-90. Also, excellent point The Mitsubishi Outlander is very competitive gives a lot for the money, I drove that and the CVT in the Mitsubishi is programmed really well, but Mazda does have an edge with a true six speed auto, it just feels a little better, but I will admit CVT's are really improving.

Good channel, good luck and keep it up! Agree on the throttle response, I am big fan of Mazda's s 2.5 Turbo, not much turbo lag compare to lets say Kia's 2.5 T on Sorrento. With time Mazda perfected it, hoping Mazda will do the same with the new 3.3 inline. CX-50 might look aggressive but 40/20/40 split on CX-5 is more versatile. Finally body colored fenders, but expect to pay much more if one of them have to be replaced (like 3x plus paint job).

Great review! Worth noting that I believe in 2025 the CX-5 will have a hybrid option. Additionally, I have two complaints with the CX-5. The seats are not the most comfortable on longer trips, and the emergency brake assist is horrible. You can set the distance between you and the car in front of you for this, but even with it set to the furthest setting, even going around a car that's say, turning into a driveway, sometimes the car will come to a screeching halt, which is very unnerving. Especially if there's a car behind you - it's quite an unsafe feature. Otherwise I love my CX-5, besides having no umph with my non-turbo version. Ride quality is fantastic, cabin noise does tend to grow as the tires wear, but is generally very quiet. Great commuter car. 9.2/10

@@MattMaranMotoring Personally I love seeing Beth on the channel and her perspective as a regular practical person and not an auto enthusiast. But personally I would prefer one long comprehensive video instead of multiple videos on same vehicle. I have a longer commute to work (25-30 mins) and prefer to find a 20+ min video to listen to while commuting instead of trying to find multiple videos. Keep up the great work Matt.

I mean Micah Muzio and his wife Evie and Joe and Lori Raiti and his wife make reviews together so I think it’s a new trend to bring in the wife because car review channels are ubiquitous these days just like everthing else has became- saturated. Channels have to find a way to distinguish themselves in the landscape.

Nothing about this is luxury at all. It's cheap and outdated. Mazda produces mostly garbage these days.

POV is great if you don't care about filming yourself speeding. I think people would get bored watching me drive the speed limit.

@@MattMaranMotoring One thing I've noticed in modern cars is that the damn speedometers are getting blurrier. It's alarming! Seriously though, some POV angle implementation would be cool to see. Several channels are doing the multi angle format now, which IMO potentially helps hold viewer interest- at least it does for me. But there's a bunch of challenges with adding that footage as well, such as changes to video script and editing, using correct audio (binaural mics), potential backlash...etc. Much to think about....but fuck it. So is 2024 the year for MMM = gopro + pov + vaseline speedotech? 1440p60? 4K60?! LETS GO!!!

Eh. More standard equipment on the hornet. Hornet has a Better value at $30k and just over 30, I can add heated seats and wheel. This Mazda is only for people who subscribe to consumer reports and think this is on par with Toyota and Honda reliability. The hornet drives better , has a nice interior as well and more standard power WITH AWD. I’d definitely take this Mazda as a second option but the 6 speed is garbage. I get it may “work well” but you can’t argue with ratios and gear spacing. Rather the higher geared cars hunt, they deliver power better and keep the RPMS low.

No one wants that Stellantis junk 😂 Quite literally NO ONE is buying hornets right now and they’re just piling up in lots. These stealerships couldn’t give them away if they wanted to.

We can agree to disagree on this one Nate, but Hornet is still technically a subcompact class vehicle and it definitely has less space than this. It also doesn't drive nearly as well as CX-5 to me, isn't as solid, doesn't have materials this nice and almost certainly won't be as reliable. Plus comparably equipped to this CX-5, the Hornet still comes out to $41k while having only 12 more hp and 25 less lb/ft of torque. Maybe these killer deals I've been hearing about for Hornet will help the value proposition, but from an MSRP standpoint Hornet is not competitive with this in my opinion.

Lmao a Hornet? Who goes for Dodge anything over Japanese refinement and quality? That’s like comparing a Chevy Malibu to a Lexus ES 300
