Review: 2023 Toyota GR Corolla - Perfect AWD Manual Machine?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I spend some time driving the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla both on the track and on the road to see what Toyota's hot hatch is like. With 300 hp, an AWD system with a user-selectable torque split, a great manual transmission and a light curb weight, the GR Corolla basically gets everything right. Unfortunately I wasn't able to try the car on public streets so my final verdict will have to wait until I have one of these as a press car, but overall it's a very impressive package and it nicely fills the gap left by the Subaru WRX STI when it left the market. What do you think about the 2023 GR Corolla? Huge thanks to Toyota for providing this opportunity!

    @@gigatron2008 Where's the context? We've all known that these Corollas were going to costs upwards of 45k USD out-the-door for some months now. They unveiled the actual msrp about a week ago. The price you've just shared is equivalent to 54k USD. Which is only 4k USD over the Morizo Edition fully-loaded. If 4k over is too much for a hand-built, 300hp Corolla then idk what you were expecting. Everybody keeps making Focus RS comparisons, yet the RS wasn't as hand-built, and Ford wasn't doing anything about dealer markups. Toyota claims they will.

    @@sleeper.simulant7327 Sure they can't, but they can control the supply of new vehicles to each dealer. I'm not sure you guys know how car dealerships work. Yes, dealers can try to sell them for whatever they want. That doesn't mean there aren't repercussions that would keep a dealer from wanting to.

The performance gap isn’t that huge and the N is essentially fully loaded whereas the Core is bargain basement unless you put on packages that only make the price gap bigger. The circuits I would write off completely since they’re all spoken for more than likely.

    Love the engine sound. Hope Toyota does really put this in the GR86. I think despite improvements over the last gen, the motor in the GR86 is still the car's weak point. It does it's job, but there isn't much character to it and it makes really unrefined noises. I would happily forego the higher revving characteristic of the motor in my GR86 for the sound and punchiness of this motor.

    I really hope they offer this with a dct so they sell more than two examples. I'd love this for a daily but I refuse to row gears at this point. No sunroof was also a miss. Why can't manufacturers make enthusiast grade vehicles for those of us that commute and daily drive vehicles in urban areas and off track? They always claim these vehicles never sell so there is no business case to make them, but then when they do actually produce them they make something like this that is manual only and lacks things people that daily drive would want. Seems like a great car otherwise.

    Yeah, they've lost their minds with this one. No one is going to WANT the core. If people buy these, they'll settle for the Core because they don't want to pay $45k (MSRP) for a Corolla with a 1.6L even if it has 300hp. I'm sure the torque won't be aww inspiring. Which will absolutely, without a doubt, be more like 55k-60k after dealer mark-ups. And who's going to spend $40k+ on a car with a 6 speaker generic radio and no arm rest? A couple people maybe don't mind. And no doubt the JBL upgrade will be part of a package that costs several thousand dollars more. You're kidding yourself if you think you'll find one of these in ANY trim for less than 45k when they come out. The only thing this has going for itself above the competition right now is the AWD, but I doubt it's enough to save it. The Elantra N, if you need a manual, and the Kona N, if you don't, are about $11k less (probably $20k less after mark-ups) than the Circuit will be, and the only thing missing is AWD. I have a feeling that this will be the next Focus RS. And maybe that's what they want? Who knows. The latest Focus RS really could have been a success, instead of only lasting 3 years. But the pricing and mark-ups kept it out of people's reach. A Ford dealer by my house had 2 Focus RSs, the MSRP was $37k. But the sticker price was $48k. And this was before the world went crazy. 2017/2018 ish.

  • @ADVelez

    @ADVelez

    Dealer markups and that abusive pricing was part of the reason the RS didn’t survive. If Toyota protects the MSRP pricing and builds double their reported numbers, they will be building these for the next 5-7 years and at least two generations. • @MattMaranMotoring

    I'd gladly buy a core if I needed AWD and 4 doors. The JBL stereo is only a $770 upgrade. Nobody is buying these for the stereo or creature comforts. People have been putting up with an unimpressive interior in the WRXs for decades now. And while Elantra N is probably a better value if you don't need AWD, the Kona N doesn't even come close to handling as good as this does. And neither of them have as much power either. The mark-ups are annoying but not every dealer does them. It just requires a bit more work, patience and probably a road trip, but MSRP Toyota dealers are out there.

  • @Dantastic123

    @Dantastic123

    @@MattMaranMotoring I would argue that the Elantra N has MORE power than the Corolla. Independent dynos have pretty much determined that the Elantra N is underrated, and by the look on your face, and all of the other reviews that came out today, the Corolla is underwhelming when it comes to acceleration, it's hard to get torque from 1.6 liters. I've heard "wow, this takes a long time to spool" on several reviews. And I get that people don't buy these rally/track cars for the creature comforts, but is it a track car, a daily driver, or both? You talk about needing 4 doors. So what's the plan, taking some passengers around the track? Or more likely taking the kids and wife to the grocery store and grandma's house? Chances are it's a daily driver that people will have fun with. Not a dedicated track car, it doesn't even come with LSDs standard, so add that to the cost. So definitely, "creature comforts" are a little more important. And needing AWD, I'm guessing is for the snow, not the track. So again, daily driver. And to me, an arm rest and speakers that aren't made of paper are things that shouldn't cost extra in a $37k Corolla, and really shouldn't be label creature comforts. And last but not lease, this thing has lane keep assist, adaptive cruise, blind spot monitors, so where do you draw the line on creature comforts. The $50k version really blows my mind without a backseat. It must really only be for collectors. In my mind, the Circuit version should be $37k, not the core version. Dealer mark-ups are sadly the current reality. And the average person isn't going to take a road trip or a flight to get a car at MSRP. Some might, but not many. So they're not gonna sell like WRXs did. Also when the WRX was released, it was about a $4k upgrade over the base model. This GR Corolla is about $18-24k more than a base Corolla. So just the price DIFFERENCE of the base vs GR, is roughly what a new WRX cost when it came out. My comment may be all over the place, I just have too many complaints for a KZread video. Like really, fake vents on base model?

Why is it that this 1.6 gets about the same MPG as a v8 mustang or corvette...? The fact it makes 300HP makes zero difference as to how much fuel it uses at a highway cruise speed. No matter what, when not under boost it on displaces 1.6L of air. That means this thing is geared super aggressive. 6th gear is probably 3k rpm or higher on the highway. The AWD system being full time instead of part time or on demand kills it as well. Im sure it will be great on a track and for people that have short commutes.
