Review: 2023 Dodge Hornet (GT + R/T) - Fastest $30k Crossover!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I review the 2023 Dodge Hornet in both GT and R/T trims to see which one is better and how they compare to their competitors. Starting right at $30,000 before destination, the 2023 Hornet claims the title of the most powerful and fastest subcompact crossover for that price tag. Beyond the performance, it has a top notch interior for the price. Once you start adding on options though the Hornet can quickly balloon in price and lose its performance-per-dollar value, and while the R/T plug-in hybrid is a lot of fun, its price tag pushes it into luxury car pricing. If you take it easy on options though, the Hornet GT can be a great option for those looking for a sportier subcompact crossover and it's awesome that Dodge is offering it. What do you think about the Hornet? Thanks to Dodge for providing this opportunity!

You and your fellow reviewers do a good job reviewing these so what I will say has no reflection on your review. For the price of the R/T they are out of their mind if they think it's worth $52k. For that price there is certainly way more options out there that I would choose over it including a slightly used base Macan. Max of upper 30's is what something like that is worth in my opinion. I get things are more expensive now but I'm choosing a luxury brand for that kind of money over this any day.

Excellent video! If I look at the Hornet’s package overall, it looks much more refined. The interior space much more crisp and less “legacy American theme”, pedals look great, and I like it overall. Matt, by chance, have you heard of there is any refresh/update happening to the Durango? I’m weighing whether I should make a purchase for an RT Durango in today’s climate vs waiting until next year, assuming there will be a (better) refresh, if you have any insight. Thanks!

The R/T is way too expensive, imho, but at $30K the GT is about perfect. Cost is right where it should be; you can add some performance goodies if you want but you don't need to. The GT motor is a slightly detuned version of the Giulia/Stelvio engine which is a stout motor capable of hurling a base Giulia to 60 in 5 seconds. In a small CUV like this, that is all you need to have some fun. Looks good too; I'd take this over Honda/Toyota/Nissan all day long even though I know those will run for 10 years while this one may be reliable for only 6 or 7. Who cares? By then I'll want a new car anyway and I'd rather have 7 years of fun vs. 10 years of boredom.

It will be interesting seeing how expensive service expenses are when compared to the Hornets Italian bother, the Alfa Romeo Tonale. I'm confused why Stellantis is laying off US working instead of building the Hornet in the US.
Matt, fair and honest review as usual, I will say, I would go Mazda, this is way overpriced for what it is, and we all know the Mazda will hold up much better over the years, plus great steering. This Hornet GT trim how could they not have the paddle shifters?? My Mother has a new Subaru Crosstrek and that even has paddle shifters. The Crosstrek actually is insane how roomy it is and the ground clearance is really amazing, Subaru all wheel drive great, perfect for my elderly Mother, I stopped by my parents and test drove that Crosstrek it is a fun all around car, good value. Anyway, I feel this Dodge/Alfa isn't going to do well, unless they offer lots of discounts to get customers in the dealership doors. Also, the real elephant in the room Dodge customers do not want a turbo four cylinder crossover or the R/T that is a mild hybrid. I am sorry I don't see it working for them, I will say at least it looks good, seems to have nice fit and finish, which is a plus.
@MattMaranMotoring
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah the paddle shifter thing really confused me too. My parents and in-laws both have Crosstreks and love them, they are impressive for what they offer! I'm looking forward to reviewing the new one sometime this year. I'll be curious to see how the Hornet does for Dodge as well. I think the lower trim GTs should sell reasonably well.

Stealerships are likely going to try to capitalize on model interest so don't expect to find any of these selling anywhere near MSRP for at least several months. Once Dodge dealerships return to Earth, good deals are likely to be common. I owned an Alfa for 3 years but waited until the second model year for my Guilia which saved me many visits to the dealer for recalls and TSBs. Stelantis isn't known for coming out of the gate strong so first year owners should expect to become friendly with the service department once the keys are handed over. If one is patient, it might be worth the wait for MY2. Let others be the QC guinea pigs for a debut year Dodge product. Swoop in down the road after the Hornet has wrapped up its first year "ooops" list then grab one at 2K under sticker when dealers realize they've got too many in stock.

25:20 That's the thing I don't like about my 4XE. I want electric mode to be electric mode. If I put my foot to the floor, I still want electric only. I'm sure it's probably a safety thing, but it still bugs me. It's not that the engine gets run dry, as it spins the engine for a bit to get it lubricated before it engages. But running an engine cold for 10 seconds at full throttle, then shutting it off and never using it the rest of the trip can't be good.
I like how the Stelvio looks over this and honestly, Mazda is super premium compared to this. Imo
Why didn't they put the 1.3t in the Dart? That would've made it a helluva lot more competitive in its class.

My dealership just received a Hornet RT with several regular options. I was interested in seeing the SUV up close and take a test drive. After seeing the window sticker with an MSRP of $43,000. I passed on the test drive. I'm not interested in an overpriced Dodge SUV that is marketed as performance. I already have a vehicle that provides performance. I'll check out Hyundai and VW for a better priced small SUV that's priced below the base Hornet GT
Kona N is the fastest cuv. Car & Driver has an amazing time on their lighting track. It was faster than a 2017 Audi RS3.
This thing is screaming for bigger / wider wheels and or tires. Looks incomplete as it sits. Interior is impressive for the price.
Dang, I would absolutely n.e.v.e.r. buy any fiat product but I gotta give them credit where it’s due. This is an attractive and affordable entrant into the segment, and it is cool for Dodge to bring back the “hornet” moniker, but I’m curious as to how well these vehicles are going to perform in the market. Obviously the biggest demographic for crossovers seem to be people that know absolutely nothing about cars, so I’m questioning the effectiveness of marketing performance to those consumers. Smart of them to put out a crossover though, no doubt they’ll definitely sell a good number of them
Why does this look like the FL5 Type R in a crossover/suv form…? The front and the back.
Kinda want a Hornet R/T depending on the price. Have to compare how it drives with the Kona N. Edit: 42k for a fully-loaded GT?! That's ridiculous. It seems like Dodge carried over the Alfa pricing too.

My personal experience doesn't square with your sentiment. I have a 2014 Fiat 500L with 90K miles which has the dual dry clutch transmission, and I've gotten great service out of it. I changed out the seal for the PCV valve at about 60K miles, but that's it. It drives as new, the interior has held up really well, no squeaks or rattles, doesn't burn a drop of oil. No rust anywhere despite our salty roads in Northeast U.S. winters. It's been an excellent car. And if you take the time to learn how to drive the DDCT, it's engaging and enjoyable, with no clutch chatter at all. It really feels like a manual in the way it functions, minus the clutch pedal. The press just dog-piled on that transmission, which to me is ironic. The enthusiast auto press complains that auto transmissions are boring to drive and aren't engaging, so here my 500L has one that isn't boring and is engaging to drive (at least to me), and the press complains that it doesn't act like torque converter slush box. Go figure. Our other car is a 2017 Fiat 500X, which, granted has only 31K miles on it, but it too has been trouble free. Not a huge fan of the ZF 9-speed, and it's not rewarding to drive in manual mode, but it's adequate, gets the job done. Our "X" has been a good car for us. Again the interior and exterior have held up very well, no squeaks or rattles. Both of our Fiats have been very solid cars. I do prefer a turbo though, and wish I'd have waited a year (or was it two) at which point the only engine available in the U.S. for the Fiat 500X was (and remains) the 1.3 liter turbo which has (IIRC) an updated ZF 9-speed. I gather it's a little nicer than the one mated to the 2.4 liter in our "X". I haven't yet had the opportunity to test drive one. I think if you keep a Fiat maintained in accordance with the schedule, they will typically be to be reliable cars. I've had Honda's, Chevy's, VW's and Acura's, and our Fiats have been the most reliable.
