Review: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan SE R-Line

I spend a week with the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan in its SE R-Line Black trim. There's many things the Tiguan excels at, like having some of the best handling in its class along with steering, brakes and throttle response that all feel great. It also has lots of room inside and is one of very few crossovers in this segment that offer a 3rd row. Unfortunately, it's let down by a powertrain that isn't as sporty as it may seem, along with a sometimes unrefined transmission, poor nighttime visibility with the halogen headlights, and less available safety tech than most of the competitors. Overall, if you value handling or roominess above all else, the Tiguan may be for you, but otherwise, many of the competing crossovers offer more for the same money or less. What do you think of the 2020 Tiguan? Thanks to Volkswagen for providing this vehicle to review.

Sounds and looks like Golf XL. Great review of an interesting option.
As you pointed out, everything is a trade-off. A feature that is important to one person, may be meaningless to another. Get the car that is right for you (and your family), and be happy with your decision. Thanks for the review Matt.

@@MattMaranMotoring The only version that looks at least a bit sporty. :-) - People here in Germany would like to have the Atlas, because here you can have just the Touareg when you want something bigger and that`s way more expensive.
I bought a 2021 Tiguan r line in black and so far it’s great my wife has the grey r line
Got away in a high speed chase in one of these. It ran out of ⛽ so I still got beat up by police. Changed my ways. Decent suv
I just picked one up 1 week n adding bags and wheels !

@@justinnegron4843 it’s the 2.0 which is better then 2.5 they use, it’s the same motor and suspension n frame as the GTI and the Golf R I’m currently lowered on Golf R springs until I get bags! But they’re good cars for the mower part mines a dark grey I think white n black look the best with the package
Nice CUV! How the vehicle feels while driving is so important, even if the actual 0-60 time is average.

The 2.0t Budack cycle needs an API day one...
LED headlights aren't available on the SEL (Unless they changed but I don't think so) You have to go up to the SEL Premium. It's ridiculous.

So accurate. Just picked up this car and the halogens are awful. Ridiculous to spend 30k+ on a mid tier car and it is still fitted with halogen reflectors. We needed a new ride and couldn't hold out until the fall when the 2022 facelift comes out.
The 2022 facelift is coming this fall. It will have standard LED headlights and digital cockpit.

Had the 18 selp rline, loved the features but ended up selling it , the active LED headlights are great too, they really need to let the halogens on the lower trims go, also its too underpowered, put the Golf R 2.0 in there , ended up getting the 21 SRT Durango.
I love mechanical instrument cluster! The digital gauge is cheap trash! They couldn't even afford to put a couple of needles there! Mechanical gauge is the best ❤️❤️❤️
My 2015 Tiguan has been fantastic. I think the value proposition of this new version is tough to beat. Especially bc I don't give a fuck how fast my car goes.

The Bullitt is a keeper, and right now I can't justify owning 3 vehicles. Beth's Mercedes C300 will be handling baby duty along with the press cars that I have every week. If the situation changes and I need to buy a dad car someday, the Stinger is still one of the top vehicles on my shopping list!
Tiguan- The Tiguan name is a cross between tiger and leguan, the German words for tiger and iguana---interesting name for a vehicle.........My thoughts; I never cared for blacked out wheels. The switch up a key is a good idea in case the battery goes out in the key. Price of base model seems good for German automobile with downsides pointed out by Matt. German engineering has a nice feel, however I prefer reliability and less expensive repairs of Asian (Japanese/Korea) automobiles. A huge thanks to you Matt for another great car/SUV review.

I'm glad it doesn't have all that safety stuff. In theory that stuff is cool, but in practice most companies safety tech is horrible to use.

Sorry VW, I really can't get the past the most underpowered 2.0T ever made. There are normally aspirated 4 cyls with better HP (Mazda Miata, Toyota Corolla). Why not tune the engine like in the Atlas? Is it really so difficult? Yes, aware it does have more torque, but still a fail IMHO.

@@froesesp It is the main reason I did not even bother to test drive one. I think VW is devoting all of its resources to electrics, and letting the ICE's whither on the vine.

Honestly the power isn't the issue in these cars IMO. It's the sluggish 8speed transmission.

@@digitaldoc100 No not worse than a CVT and it doesn't feel overly slow in shifting but there's just something sluggish about it and it tends to gear hunt as well. I think the Tiguan even with it's low power would be more than fine if it had a ZF auto.

I love halogen, halogen is the best!!!!! It's more practical and has better color temperature also the headlights look bigger than the led trim, which means halogen is more expensive!!!! Led is cheap trash 🙂
