Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line the GTI of SUV's?

Looking more like a #TiguanGTI, the 2020 #TiguanRLine adds some much needed visual enhancements to the #VolkswagenTiguan for 2020. Riding on 20" wheels and tires, a unique front and rear fascia, and some tweaks to the interior, it should help the #Tiguan stand out in the ultra crowded compact SUV segment. Just don't expect GTI performance with only 184 HP under the hood.

This car is on par with every other SUV in the class, it’s not meant to be a street racer. It’s a beautiful comfortable everyday driver built for the average everyday driver. In my opinion it is one of the best if not the best.

No, it's not, but a lot of people look to VW for the higher end, luxury, of the standard types of cars. Usually, with luxury, you at least get a bit of power. It's not even just the tiguan. VW has really made their engines stupid slow compared to what they used to be capable of years ago. I think thats why most people complain. I really do want them to either beef the Tiguan up or give us something like the Touareg back with some power because I honestly think that would do so well in the current market we are in.

I think the fact that this is the R-Line version, the expectations for speed and agility are set higher compared to a normal Tiguan. That’s why it’s disappointingly slow.

For what this car costs, not having a more powerful engine is a sin when you look at the rest of the competition. This is a near $40k car, find me another German marquee offering a vehicle in the $40k range that's got as low HP/TQ numbers as this. You can't. If you want a simple SUV, buy an SEL; well equipped and reasonably priced (albeit boring and plain). If you're going to spec up to the R-Line at this price point, a larger power train is a must and it's a gross omission by VW to not include this. You're buying this for the performance aspect (driving dynamics in this case). It should have more power.

Treize Elements EXACTLY!!! I was so disappointed after test driving the Tiguan that I was like well shit maybe I’ll just have to buy a BMW if I want a decent SUV. Because I refuse to pay that much for a wimpy engine. But esp with the R-Line point... Literally all the package is is cosmetics. Which irks me. Ugh. We need a GLI but for the SUV segment!!! Lol. And I dont want the Atlas because thats a literal bus

Congrats to the best reviewer on YT. Love how you see all the little things other reviewers just skip on, like the door shut, remote key quality etc. The main reason I bought three VWs in the past five years was the high interior quality. Really disappointing to see all the cost cuts making the VW just another brand. At the same time the asians and especially the koreans are really stepping up on the interior quality.

I agree with almost everything said in the video. One important thing to note is the EA888 engine in thjs Tiguan is that it's incredibly tunable. I wish he would mention that. With a simple ECU APR tune you can get 60 hp and 80 lbs tq more. The engine just need to be unlocked for max potential.

He's expecting things VW no longer offers after Dieselgate. In any event, VW has never been big on innovation. It doesn't want to cross streams with its luxury brands. Only under Ferdinand Piëch did that change for a moment. When VW tried to improve the quality of their cars it got terrible feedback from the automotive community. It first SUV was over-built and a dismal failure because nobody wanted to pay $50,000 for a VW Touareg.

I picked up my 2019 tiguan sel premium r-line for 34k last year. These things are always on sale at dealerships. I get a combined 26mpg on regular 87 gas. Yeah a beefier engine would be nice but if you look at the competitors suv's, the engine is around the class average. This is supposed to be a SUV for family use, not for racing. If I had a beef with the car, it would be that there is too much black in the interior. I would swap out that grey carbon fiber mesh he describes at 8:10 that is on the dash and doors with a brown wood to brighten it up a little bit and make it look classier like an Audi.

You may have paid 34k but with a 39-40k sticker, a better engine should come with it. Many other car brands add more powerful engine options with higher trimmed cars, as they should. No one is asking for a race car, but if Mazda can offer a 250HP 2.0T option in their higher trimmed CX-5 for 35k, VW should be able offer the same.

For people criticizing the low HP & lack of a DSG, remember this, VW offers a very generous American Warranty. The warranty is the best in Murica, than they offer elsewhere in the world. A highly boosted engine will cost more in LT warranty repairs and VW DSGs are noted for their reliability nightmares. The 8 Speed Auto used in the American Tiguan is an Aisin (Toyota). This means this transmission will be super-reliable. With massive Dieselgate settlements, VW cannot really afford to have high LT Warranty liability expenses.

You make a great point, and it really has nothing to do with expecting it to be the GTI of small/midsize SUV's..but rather simply using it for its intended purpose. Imagine it loaded with 4 people plus luggage at about 4-5k above sea level in Colorado..and thats not even climbing up a winding mountain road to reach a ski resort...just tooling around at higher elevations. Prepare to be passed by lighter cars with even less HP/TQ. Why doesnt at least the R-line Tiguan get the same 268hp version of the exact same engine in the Arteon? I can't imagine real world fuel economy suffering much if at all if they did..and it seems like the perfect tune for a machine like this.

In Europe they sell mostly short wheelbase version and the 2.0 turbo engine (which is around 230 hp in stock) can be easily and safely chip tuned to 315 hp. By saying safely I mean that the 7 double clutch wet transmission DQ500 can officially withstand 700 nm of torque (350 nm in stock engine). So, by paying around $500 for the booster chip you’ll get an SUV with proved dynamics of 5 sec 0-60. Isn’t it a GTI?

Could definitely use more power...but I'm loving the refinement of the Tiguan. Handling is very nimble for the kind of vehicle it is... The panoramic sunroof is a win. Infotainment system is a go. The Blacked out version with the white exterior IS beautiful. Also, sport mode definitely fools me into thinking the vehicle is faster than what it is, really. it was either the Tiguan or a Mustang Ecoboost. The Mustang has a lot of pep in it's step. But at the end of the day, practicality wins out. But just to reiterate your point, the Tiguan could certainly use 30-50 more horses to murder everything.

I don’t like the new VW USA strategy personally but it makes perfect sense. They tried over the years to introduce more premium versions of existing cars or models like the Touraeg, Phaeton, old Passat, etc here but time and again, Americans have shown that they don’t care about semi-premium or nice materials at higher costs. If they want that, they will go for cars with actual luxury cachet. They want inexpensive, spacious, higher riding, and smoother cars. So, what VW has to do to be successful here is pump out SUVs (and I think they need another 2 crossover to slot below the Tiguan) and the sedans and sporty cars get left behind. The Jetta makes sense but the Golf doesn’t make sense outside of the GTI and R. And I think whatever they’re doing with the Passat is pointless. It’s like they don’t care about that car at all.

I have an 2018 EU-spec Tiguan and comparing it to the North American Tiguan my feels a lot more premium. For instance it features a tri-zone climate, adjustable armrest in typical VW fashion, no blank buttons in the center console and much cooler led taillights. The taillights on this tester is actually the entry taillights in Europe. It is a shame that VW does not offer the same quality and features in North America as they do in Europe.

Not really my cup of tea (crossover segment), but this is a nice, understated design that should age well. I prefer the Tiguan’s design over the CRV or Rav-4. I don’t think the R-Line trim stands out enough visually, but I guess it doesn’t matter since it’s not doesn’t have any powertrain, transmission or suspension upgrades. The 20 inch wheels seem like overkill for the Tiguan. I can’t imagine most people who’ll buy this will complain about the sluggishness. VW knows the market for these type of vehicles.

I own one and sell VW. It is my #1 seller. Best bang for the buck in its class and is a blast of a car. You can get an SE R Line Black for under 37k and an SEL R Line for around 42k. 2022 gets a facelift and a ton of standard features added. The 21’s a little cheaper if you can find them.

We test drove it in residential streets. Power seemed OK with four people in the car. It didn't seem sluggish or like I would be panicking on on ramps. But it's not the GTI of anything for sure. It's smooth, you don't feel shifts. Wife loved how it drove. We also drove the GLB, which seems more powerful but also kind of jumpy. My knock on the powertrain is the mileage; I would expect a bit better considering past EA888 cars with only 6 gears do about the same. I blame those wide 20s.

The Achilles tendon of most new cars is always the underpowered engine. With four thousand pounds of car, it needed either a V6 or Turbo-4 with at least 230 - 250 horsepower to be a decent mover. Funny thing is, VW had the Golf GTI engine available and chose not to even offer it as an option. Strange...

VW has been noticeably making cars to a price point for a while now. I mean, all economy manufacturers do that, but VW is really making it noticeable. Regarding their engines, I dunno, maybe their research is showing ppl don’t care about power as much as you’d think 🤷‍♂️. They got rid of the Jetta SE’s performance, and are now solely using the R badge for styling purposes, besides the Gold R.

Normal mode its seems like it cant ever find the right gear at low speeds. But it is a beast in the snow. Cant praise it enough for that. ..Interior is almost silent at highway speeds. Just FYI, mine has had 2 suspension recalls and eats tires. It seems to suffer from similar camber issues that the CC had. 23 avg mpg.

My 17 (Tiguan 2) with the E888 tsi is more so considered the gti of suvs. Smaller, lighter and much more nimble. I make 260 ish hp and 250 torque with a stage one tune from MA Performance and a Cobb v3. Everything else is stock minus an apr rear turbo inlet pipe and an afe power dry drop in filter. I’d like to see numbers like that from this model year even with the same mods. It’s pulls hard and does everything an suv should. Go back a couple year models and then yes you have the gti of suvs.
