Review: 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I review the 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR! Would you rather have this over a Subaru WRX STI? Many thanks to South Park Mitsubishi for allowing me to review this car.

I've had one for 2 years and I cannot believe how much I still love it, it's thirsty but the cornering ability is AWESOME.

@bill bittner I'm about to college in a year or so. And I'm hoping to go to a good college and get a bachelor's degree in nursing. Afterwards maybe importing an r34 gtt or an Evo 8 or 9. You have ur dream now! But hopefully I can reach mine too!
First time I drove an Evo was the day I bought it. And it has 600whp. 1000 smiles per gallon!

Evo owner here - I totally agree with this review. The STI is a bit more "well rounded" and is better as a daily. My Evo is sometimes a pain in the ass but when I want to have fun, it is VERY fun.

Have owned an STI and currently own an Evo 9, the cars aren't even in the same ball park when it comes to performance. The Evo is much better at everything and the gap only gets bigger when you start to mod them. I find his critique of the Recaro seats comical when the USDM STI/WRX seats are probably some of the worst seats I have ever sat in when it comes to a "sports" car. I had to do the seat spring mod on my STI just to make them somewhat acceptable. I have daily driven my 9 for almost 6 years now so I guess the reviewer either has a crazy long commute in mind or just doesn't appreciate a raw car because I love driving it every day. I will say I won't take the 9 on road trips over 500 miles, it does become brutal at that point. I'm currently trying to Justify an Audi S3 as a daily driver so I can make the Evo a garage queen but it's just so much fun to drive I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger. TLDR; Evo 9 > STI ringland eater and it isn't even close. Also the Lotus you mentioned is not quick and does not take to mods like a 4G63, that's why you wouldn't get a Lotus...

I guess it just depends if the car was poorly cared for before you got it. I've had my evo 9 for almost 6 years, running at 28psi of boost and the car has not had one issue. The only things I've had to replace are the usual wear and tear items like tires, oil, clutch, brake pads, etc... Sorry about the Scooby man, good luck with your next car choice. If I was to get a Subaru again it would be a pre 2007 STi.

+David F (dtf96) exhaust, tune, boost controller, hard ic pipes and fuel pump. Evos have a bigger stock turbo than stis so they can run more boost. my biggest gripe with stis besides the glass engines is they have 0 top end stock because they come with a pea shooter turbo. :/
@lukebrunner1636

+David F (dtf96) I know the feeling haha. As long as you enjoy the car is all that matters. Good clean evo 9s (best usdm model) are still going for over 20k so I think you are doing alright for what you spent on your scoob.

+Ilisha Mas Based on what? Evos with a 4g63 can reliably handle 500+ hp and take to mods very well. stis get iffy when going stage 2 lol(less than 400 hp) I guess if you like having no top end, crappy seats and a glass engine the sti is a better buy. But what do I know, I've only owned and modded both cars. :)
@kongzillagod
8 жыл бұрын
+Ilisha Mas still is cheaper to buy. no way. subarus are very popular and young and old car enthusiasts are willing to pay big money to get them , so guess what they sell email higher priced not to say they are truly worth that high price tag. just like the supra. before the movies 🎥 came out especially the fast and furious supra would pass by the auction block a few times before people would buy. now forget about it
Female EVO IX SE driver here (61K since new). I think the look on your face said it all! I would agree with much of your review. However the steering on the EVO is much better than the STI which has little feel to me. The EVO is like driving a giant go-cart. The STI is much more prone to understeer also. The bad points for the EVO on a daily driver basis is the awful AWFUL turning circle and the lack of creature comforts. Also servicing is a problem with few dealers in my area of Portland, Oregon. I have been asked the most ridiculous questions at Mitsubishi such as "is it an automatic". My friends call it my "race car with a radio". I continually get very enthusiastic comments (often from STI drivers who are amazed to see a middle aged female driver) on the car and it is 8 years old.

Yea i live in Medford OR and service with the dealers here are whack too. And handling in the Evo is much more responsive and better
Because a review on an evo from a guy named subaruwrxfan would not be biased

Seriously, take it with a grain of salt, Mistubishi have been MILES ahead of Subaru for a VERY long time, and it's only up until the recent WRX/STi (god forbid its horrid ass looks) that it has even come CLOSE to the EVO, whether it be the 5-speed ADM model GSR, or the JDM 6-speed GSR, and, the MR ranges.

It's called having a favorite car, just because that's his name doesn't mean that he only likes those
Thx man! I've waited so long for a good review of my favorite car! :)
Evo guys, quit getting butt hurt. The majority of what he said is absolutely true. I have a IX and it isn't my daily driver nor would it ever be. It is not a comfortable car to be in and has the turning radius of a battleship, which can be a pain sometime. But it puts a huge smile on my face when its time to have fun. He's right, the Evo is a no nonsense track car for the street. The STI has a better balance of performance and comfort. Both are awesome! Besides, its his review, if you want your opinions to be heard, make your own. Nice vid.

Its not that they are butthurt persay, just some people dont like hearing the truth, at the end of the day: WRX/STi= better DAILY driver car EVO= Better performance driver car... definately excellent for weekend warriors though... which is a good thing if you are like me and stack massive mileage commuting to work and thus have a cheap bomb of a car to do it in.

been waiting so long for this! Thanks!
A friend of my brother had a yellow Evo this body style and he had a Ford Lightning before it. He didn't have the Evo very long because he couldn't ever get used to how crazy the car was (and the cops loved it lol). It had a bigger turbo and intercooler, plus methanol injection I think. And this coming from a guy who also owns an early 2000s Corvette Z06. Good review.
Difference between a wrx and an evo is that the wrx is more like your average driving car and evos are raw. its a raw driving experience. IMO

I love these reviews. Niceeeee. Keep up the greatwork!!!!
Damn, the quality of your videos have come a long way.
appreciate every review man.
dude i love your reviews man
I do mention back seat room in some of the cars I review, if I think it matters to the people interested in the car. An Evo is on the hardcore side so I didn't bother. This car is about average backseat size, you can fit 3 adults back there fine as long as the people sitting up front aren't fairly tall.
Man I've always loved this model Evo, if it wasn't for the truly painful insurance rates I would be in one of these in a heartbeat.
Love these reviews
this guy is pretty good at review cars! good job!
subaruwrxfan, keep up the good work. Enjoy the videos!

So cool. Since the evo x has the MR only in manual I am glad to see it’s stick shift here
Seat complaint = get over it Clutch complaint = get over it Noise complaint = get over it Raving about stock power = get over it
Fair review. I can't believe that the gauges are still in the stock position. It takes a few minutes to swap the stereo & gauges, and move the boost to the upper left.
Great review :)
Cool Vid! Great that you finally got the chance to review an Evo. You pretty much pointed out the same perception I had when I testdrove a slightly modified Evo 8 a few weeks ago. It's almost a bit sad, that the car is that harsh, cause it takes away a bit of the everyday driving abilitiy that you might hope to get with 4 doors and a trunk. Anyway for me it means to have a look at the STI or even an Audi S4...
Didn't see it thanks. Really good review by the way.
Great review dude. As a Japanese car fan I love both the Evos and the Imprezas.
Nice review! Thanks ALOT!
Bro nice review
I love the way that evo looks....so iconic
I understand he reviews cars so he has to critique them, but he seemed a little heavy on the complaints. Just my opinion.
the way you described this car, is exactly the same as my stage 1 2011 wrx. Stiff, uncomfortable, laggy, but a ton of fun and makes a great noise. im going on 170k miles but i will keep this thing until it rusts out
Hey, i really loved the review you done on the 1986 Corvette. I"m a Chevy fan, and especially like the old ones. I would love to see you do a review of a 1997 Camaro z28.
its not about how much power the car makes stock but how much it can make. the evo has much more potential than an sti
@coolster471

They have the same potential, just have to put a bit more work into the STI to get it there #Builtnotbought

Evo got the best 4WD system in the world. There are always Evo vs STI street battle in Hong Kong just like WMMT. Usually Evo’s engine can be modify more. The STI is a more driver friendly car and a little bit cheaper.

Don't know about straight line performance, but the AYC works wonders in the corners
I have the evo 9 alcantera recaros in my turbo 300zx they are just lovely.
I plan on buying an Evo 9 next year and the lancer filler "guage" is one thing I really don't like. I do plan on replacing it with a boost guage though. thanks for the review!!
just bought a 06 evo 9 MR i love it one of the best cars i have owned. Mine has 487hp and 500tq running E-85.
Great review! Love all your reviews about these rally cars including the different generations of STIs. Keep up the good work! (Also really appreciate the daily driving points)
Great review, I like how you give a car credit for what it does well, what not so well, and what it does horribly lol
Great Video, Thanks
Evo is a beast! 4g63t best 4 cylinder engine ever made in my opinion!
I'll review a V8 version as soon as I can find one to review.
I daily the evo and to me I have no problems with the seats great review i got mine back in april with 22,xxx miles and man that was a steal.
I think it depends on a person. For me the evo uncomfortable area gives me the feed back of the car. I feel like its an extension of my body. Softer cars makes me very sleepy.
the evo is simply a real mans car not some jerk mobile
Pretty ancient head unit for an 06. My 06 Buick has like a 5" touch screen radio/nav display with XM radio!
I'm surprised you didn't touch on the transmission. Also all EVO's have gear whine in 1st gear and slight whine 6th (for the MR). I love this car and would love to own one at some point (non MR though due to the trans). Great review Matt!
subaruwrxfan, I would really love to see a review of an evo 8 jdm 6-speed gsr, I understand that the IX MR are completely different from the evo 8 gsr (6-speed) But I would still love to see an independant review.
Thank you for reviewing my favorite car..
I just bought a 2011 Ralliart and I love it. But damn. This will be my next car hopefully by late 2014.

I have an 8 with the MR gages from my friends black mr 06...the boost gage will fit perfectly where the radio is and you can relocate the radio down...much easier to read
What bhp specs did the yanks get?? Was it only the gsr models??
Nicely done! :) Jack
If you could please please please, do a review on a Mitsubishi Galant Ralliart. If possible. Thank you, I enjoy your videos a lot!
have you test drove a bmw e39 m5? and if you have would you pick an evo 9 over one? im in the market for a new car and ive narrowed my choice down to those two cars
I actually own this car in Mdnight Club: Los Angeles on my PS3!!!!! Same year and model and I love it.
one of my dream cars
Off point on boost evo 9 turbo spools up at 3500 Evo 8 turbo spools up at 3200 Stock boost is 18psi, mitsubishi made it this way due to a law regarding advertise horsepower. Once you mod the evo vs a modded subaru the evo just dominates. If you want a daily car get a civic for comfort and mpg Yes im an evo guy I got your quote earlier about rolling eyes lol
I hope to own a evo 9 some day.
you don't buy an Evo for a comfortable ride. wow you had to mention it so many times... That's like buying a sports car and expecting it to have good gas mileage. i had to thumbs down.
@Gixxer1000man77
7 жыл бұрын
electric feel I agree, he mentioned it way too much. It is a MR it has the upgraded suspension...
wow, slow steering response? That's the first time I've heard that one. The evo uses a 13:1 rack to pinion ratio which is one of the tightest made in MANY cars.
Excellent review! I'm sure this one won't last long at the dealer. I would choose an EVO over a STi.
As a STi owner I have always loved evos. I guess you could call me a awd turbo lover! ;)
After an Sti, an evo is my 2nd choice for my next car actually. love evos.
DROOOOOOLLLLL !!! A Rare gem indeed !!
you could adjust the suspension to make the bouncing stop and if you have a turbo and you race and your going fast it could slow down the speed when you turn if you have a turbo charger
Hey Subaruwrxfan can you try and review a 2001 Integra Type R.

Yes the Evos~ One of Mitsubishi's best models for sure~ You don't get cars like this from them anymore, and that's a shame~ I think the Evo VII or VIII is my favourite iteration of the car~
review a Corvette Stingray if you ever get the chance it would really make a sick vid! :)
Had one of these in high school. 2005 Silver EVO IX. Thing was a beast, oh how I miss it. Great review!
a scion tc, that was my first car and it was amazing. I just sold it and boy do i miss it.
Minor suspension mods an seat upgrades can easily change the issues your pointing out.... which most owners change anyway because who owns an import an leaves it stock? ID choose an Evo over an Sti anyday.
@subaruwrxfan after driving both a evo and sti wich would you rather have ?
Actual dream car
I just reviewed a 2013 last week. It's the same car aside from some minor exterior and interior differences.
I feel thatmany of the issues with it being a rough ride wont matter to most buyers because its a car that will most likely be modified and customized to the point where you wont have those issues.
Should have reviewed the 5-speed EVO 9 RS or the GSR... The 6-speed on the EVO 9 MR is as strong as tofu, even Sheptrans don't mod them.
That's the same reason why a supercharger is better in every way instant power on demand no lag. Supercharger for LIFE! 💯
subaru warswaxrrxrx fan . . . lol gets me every time.
which would you get the 5 speed or 6 speed. It will be used for daily with 2-3 track days during the season! Im planning to get the evo 9 as my Exige is not that practical for DD!
First person I've heard describing an Evo's steering as slow. Especially a IX.
@brotomwang8218
3 жыл бұрын
This dude must be off lean fr no quicker steering than an evo
Can't compare steering feel or initial steering angle with snow tires! The rack on the evo is faster than the STI. Not sure about the FRS but it's probably similar to the EVO. I'm not sure if many cars have a faster rack. Also, The Elise doesn't have 4 doors :)
