Review: 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I review the 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR! Would you rather have this over a Subaru WRX STI? Many thanks to South Park Mitsubishi for allowing me to review this car.

Evo owner here - I totally agree with this review. The STI is a bit more "well rounded" and is better as a daily. My Evo is sometimes a pain in the ass but when I want to have fun, it is VERY fun.

Have owned an STI and currently own an Evo 9, the cars aren't even in the same ball park when it comes to performance. The Evo is much better at everything and the gap only gets bigger when you start to mod them. I find his critique of the Recaro seats comical when the USDM STI/WRX seats are probably some of the worst seats I have ever sat in when it comes to a "sports" car. I had to do the seat spring mod on my STI just to make them somewhat acceptable. I have daily driven my 9 for almost 6 years now so I guess the reviewer either has a crazy long commute in mind or just doesn't appreciate a raw car because I love driving it every day. I will say I won't take the 9 on road trips over 500 miles, it does become brutal at that point. I'm currently trying to Justify an Audi S3 as a daily driver so I can make the Evo a garage queen but it's just so much fun to drive I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger. TLDR; Evo 9 > STI ringland eater and it isn't even close. Also the Lotus you mentioned is not quick and does not take to mods like a 4G63, that's why you wouldn't get a Lotus...

I guess it just depends if the car was poorly cared for before you got it. I've had my evo 9 for almost 6 years, running at 28psi of boost and the car has not had one issue. The only things I've had to replace are the usual wear and tear items like tires, oil, clutch, brake pads, etc... Sorry about the Scooby man, good luck with your next car choice. If I was to get a Subaru again it would be a pre 2007 STi.

+David F (dtf96) exhaust, tune, boost controller, hard ic pipes and fuel pump. Evos have a bigger stock turbo than stis so they can run more boost. my biggest gripe with stis besides the glass engines is they have 0 top end stock because they come with a pea shooter turbo. :/

+David F (dtf96) I know the feeling haha. As long as you enjoy the car is all that matters. Good clean evo 9s (best usdm model) are still going for over 20k so I think you are doing alright for what you spent on your scoob.

+Ilisha Mas Based on what? Evos with a 4g63 can reliably handle 500+ hp and take to mods very well. stis get iffy when going stage 2 lol(less than 400 hp) I guess if you like having no top end, crappy seats and a glass engine the sti is a better buy. But what do I know, I've only owned and modded both cars. :)

  • @kongzillagod

    @kongzillagod

+Ilisha Mas still is cheaper to buy. no way. subarus are very popular and young and old car enthusiasts are willing to pay big money to get them , so guess what they sell email higher priced not to say they are truly worth that high price tag. just like the supra. before the movies 🎥 came out especially the fast and furious supra would pass by the auction block a few times before people would buy. now forget about it

Female EVO IX SE driver here (61K since new). I think the look on your face said it all! I would agree with much of your review. However the steering on the EVO is much better than the STI which has little feel to me. The EVO is like driving a giant go-cart. The STI is much more prone to understeer also. The bad points for the EVO on a daily driver basis is the awful AWFUL turning circle and the lack of creature comforts. Also servicing is a problem with few dealers in my area of Portland, Oregon. I have been asked the most ridiculous questions at Mitsubishi such as "is it an automatic". My friends call it my "race car with a radio". I continually get very enthusiastic comments (often from STI drivers who are amazed to see a middle aged female driver) on the car and it is 8 years old.

Seriously, take it with a grain of salt, Mistubishi have been MILES ahead of Subaru for a VERY long time, and it's only up until the recent WRX/STi (god forbid its horrid ass looks) that it has even come CLOSE to the EVO, whether it be the 5-speed ADM model GSR, or the JDM 6-speed GSR, and, the MR ranges.

Evo guys, quit getting butt hurt. The majority of what he said is absolutely true. I have a IX and it isn't my daily driver nor would it ever be. It is not a comfortable car to be in and has the turning radius of a battleship, which can be a pain sometime. But it puts a huge smile on my face when its time to have fun. He's right, the Evo is a no nonsense track car for the street. The STI has a better balance of performance and comfort. Both are awesome! Besides, its his review, if you want your opinions to be heard, make your own. Nice vid.

Its not that they are butthurt persay, just some people dont like hearing the truth, at the end of the day: WRX/STi= better DAILY driver car EVO= Better performance driver car... definately excellent for weekend warriors though... which is a good thing if you are like me and stack massive mileage commuting to work and thus have a cheap bomb of a car to do it in.

A friend of my brother had a yellow Evo this body style and he had a Ford Lightning before it. He didn't have the Evo very long because he couldn't ever get used to how crazy the car was (and the cops loved it lol). It had a bigger turbo and intercooler, plus methanol injection I think. And this coming from a guy who also owns an early 2000s Corvette Z06. Good review.

I do mention back seat room in some of the cars I review, if I think it matters to the people interested in the car. An Evo is on the hardcore side so I didn't bother. This car is about average backseat size, you can fit 3 adults back there fine as long as the people sitting up front aren't fairly tall.

Cool Vid! Great that you finally got the chance to review an Evo. You pretty much pointed out the same perception I had when I testdrove a slightly modified Evo 8 a few weeks ago. It's almost a bit sad, that the car is that harsh, cause it takes away a bit of the everyday driving abilitiy that you might hope to get with 4 doors and a trunk. Anyway for me it means to have a look at the STI or even an Audi S4...

Off point on boost evo 9 turbo spools up at 3500 Evo 8 turbo spools up at 3200 Stock boost is 18psi, mitsubishi made it this way due to a law regarding advertise horsepower. Once you mod the evo vs a modded subaru the evo just dominates. If you want a daily car get a civic for comfort and mpg Yes im an evo guy I got your quote earlier about rolling eyes lol

you don't buy an Evo for a comfortable ride. wow you had to mention it so many times... That's like buying a sports car and expecting it to have good gas mileage. i had to thumbs down.

wow, slow steering response? That's the first time I've heard that one. The evo uses a 13:1 rack to pinion ratio which is one of the tightest made in MANY cars.

you could adjust the suspension to make the bouncing stop and if you have a turbo and you race and your going fast it could slow down the speed when you turn if you have a turbo charger

Yes the Evos~ One of Mitsubishi's best models for sure~ You don't get cars like this from them anymore, and that's a shame~ I think the Evo VII or VIII is my favourite iteration of the car~

Minor suspension mods an seat upgrades can easily change the issues your pointing out.... which most owners change anyway because who owns an import an leaves it stock? ID choose an Evo over an Sti anyday.

I feel thatmany of the issues with it being a rough ride wont matter to most buyers because its a car that will most likely be modified and customized to the point where you wont have those issues.

Should have reviewed the 5-speed EVO 9 RS or the GSR... The 6-speed on the EVO 9 MR is as strong as tofu, even Sheptrans don't mod them.

Can't compare steering feel or initial steering angle with snow tires! The rack on the evo is faster than the STI. Not sure about the FRS but it's probably similar to the EVO. I'm not sure if many cars have a faster rack. Also, The Elise doesn't have 4 doors :)
