the "V" cutouts in the circular crown are not symmetric in the original design: one of the sides is normal to the plane of of the fan, and the other is tapered. that was, accoridng to a Noctua representative's interview, in order to "straighten" the rotational energy the fan induce onto the airflow

  • @simontemplar2823

I've coveted this thing ever since I watched your video. Where I live, there aren't many 3D printing opportunities but a customer of mine hooked me up with a place where they print parts for car and motorcycle customization. Went there, got the two parts made and... I came back home with a 3D printer they didn't use anymore, too small for the quantities they print these days. Now I have got that really great desk fan and I can dabble into printing too. Coincidences leading to good things! And that fan rocks. It blows *just* strong enough for a desktop use. You don't want a too powerful airflow, since when using monitors, one blinks less. Too much wind can then make your eyes sore. This bad boy does the trick perfectly. Thank you again for that great project, I linked it to many of my buddies.

@@Arterexius if Noctua applied for a patent of this or similar design, it doesn't matter how freely or open source the files are. Microsoft could release their entire source code for Windows. But all that means is you can look at it. Patents and copyrights etc are still enforceable. Even the Linux operating system, arguably the king of opensource, is protected by a licence. Granted mostly all that licence says is you are free to copy, modify and use the code however you wish, BUT any such code copied, modified and used remains protected by the license AND anybody else can copy, modify or use the code that you've copied, modified or used blah blah blah.

I've been considering 3d printing airflow ducts to concentrate airflow in the places it needs to get, rather than just blowing indiscriminately into the case and hoping the GPU fans, for example, pick up enough nice cool outside air. Reminds me of the old days when I cut a hole in the side panel of my case, then used a truncated sour cream tub and some hot glue to duct outside air directly to the MC462A heatsink on my overclocked Duron in like 1998.

I'm not surprised that Noctua wants to make one. I am surprised that it is taking them so long. I've been making these style desk fans from 120mm fans for decades. Usually with an AC to DC "universal" power brick from Radio Shack (back when they were a place to get electronic parts) so that I could select between things like 5V, 9V, or 12V to control the speed. (Though a simple 12V and a variable potentiometer do the trick too.) Maybe tape on some straightened paper clips or cardboard for safety. A couple of big office-supply binder clips with erasers taped on for feet. Put those office supplies to good use! LOL Though 3D printing certainly makes them nicer. A kit from Noctua would be neat.

The smoke tests look awesome. As the ducts are designed to increase the velocity of the airflow it would be interesting to know how much the air stream exiting the ducts pulls the surrounding air in and if that explains the design of the four grooves. Maybe doing a smoke test by providing smoke above the fan and placing a cardboard to prevent the smoke from going into it to visualize how the surrounding air is pulled into the exiting stream ?
