There are 3 albums with Dio, not just 2.

Many of his most loyal bandmates followed him from band to band with great respect. They considered him a philosopher with his songwriting. The world lost a talented voice when he died. If there is an afterlife I sure hope he is continuing to make great music for us to enjoy when we make the same journey.

Stargazer from his days with Rainbow, in my opinion, is the best rock song ever. He was quite the writer, singer, and entertainer.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Dio as a young man. Let me tell you, regardless of his detain of the church as an institution. ( the catholic church) , he lived his life very christ like. Full of encouragement and charity. He was a beautiful , wonderful man who gave of himself to help others. Thats being a Christian.

Many people don't understand lines like "love can be seen as the answer but nobody bleeds for the dancer", and I agree with you that Jesus did. But I think Dio wanted to say something else. Lyric-wise, this was Dio's personal fav song, especially the line: "the world is full of kings and queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams" was the most important one of his career, according to him. So for me, the song is about ambition; you either realize your dreams or have them stolen by some ruler. I think we need this perspective to interpret the other line. Love can be seen as the answer because it is unconditional. But admiration isn't; you have to work for that. The dancer has to go through pain to excel; nobody does that for him. To bring it back to the biblical truth: works don't bring us salvation/heaven. But works do testify of our faith. Dio wanted to be the best and he worked relentlessly to achieve greatness. And he did achieve it. Let us be relentless in whatever is important to us.

The dancer is the lowest card in a deck of tarot cards. The song is about empathy and making your own choices

I see "nobody bleeds for the dancer" as a reference to shared pains and sins under the "illusion" or "appearance" that the victim is the one left bleeding and scarred. Kinda goes with what your saying just a little deeper and a more broad way of reading into it.

God is love, Jesus is the dancer going around showing people the power of God but christians are afraid to go out and be persecuted for proclaiming Jesus is lord, because as Jesus was persecuted chained, beaten, chastised, riddiculed, tortured and killed the same can happen to a christian, alot of "christians" are afraid to bleed for Jesus.

I think "Nobody bleeds for the dancer" is a bit of hyperbolism, similar to the way we might say "nobody likes Nickleback;" I'm sure there are a few people out there who do. The point being that precious few people are willing to sacrifice for others, whether it be blood, money, time... whatever. Earlier Black Sabbath had some profound music as well -- Geezer Butler was a fine lyricist in his own right. The song "After Forever" might surprise you. On the subject of requests, Jethro Tull's "Aqualung" album was a sort of double concept album, with each side of the disc being it's own thing. The second side was titled "My God," and makes some interesting observations about organized religion (the Church of England specifically, I think). It would be cool to hear an analysis of the tracks from that collection. EDIT: And now I see you've already reviewed "After Forever." Nevermind...

Thanks, the use of hyperbole is a good point. I was considering some Jethro Tull in the near future.

I've thought a lot about Dio since he died. When he would do this song live he would include an interlude where he would declare he was "going to burn in hell with the rest of you!" I hope he found Jesus in his last days.

I met Dio in Austin Tx and found him to be very engaging with his fans. Most cordial fellow.

That's what I have heard. Super nice guy. As a song writer, vocalist, and front man he was one of the best ever. in any music genre.

You need to cover two songs by Dio...’Mask of the Great Deceiver’ and ‘Live for the King’ both found on Kerry Livgren’s Christian album SEEDS OF CHANGE. Dio didn’t know he was singing on a Christian album. Both songs are epic.

The dancer is very important,when you figure out who the dancer is you will understand the meaning of this song

As a believer for several years, what I've come to find that, while being a believer DOES NOT guarantee a carefree and trouble free life. What it DOES do is change your OUTLOOK when trouble and difficulties occur IN LIFE...The difference...A believer 1.) Has hope. and 2.) Believes everything (Both good and bad) HAPPENS for a reason...Ultimately, resulting in good though we may never understand/see the good this side of Heaven. The plans of GOD are so far above our understanding that, to be honest, WE just can't comprehend it.

Well, we could write a dissertation about those lyrics, I suppose. As you said, he was no fan of organized religion, to put it mildly, although he had nothing against the bible per se and praised it as a moral guideline. I don't know whether you've come across this song "Jesus, Mary and the Holy Ghost" he wrote in 1993. It's about nightmares he had as kid about stone statues and Jesus on the cross in the church, and stories nuns told him about the Holy Ghost that scared the heck out of him. He told that story in interviews again and again, even when he was way past 60. I've been wondering what really happened back then; writing that song at the age of 50 and talking about it in your 60s strikes me as a bit much for a mere nightmare. He said a couple of times he considered himself a Taoist, in the sense that he believes heaven and hell are here on Earth, inside of everyone of us, and it's for us to make the right choice. Another topic that's often to be found in his lyrics is that what we believe to be real is an illusion, and things may not be what they seem to be. It's here twice ("the closer you get to the meaning, the sooner you know that you're dreaming", and "if it seems to be real, it's illusion"). Plato's allegory of the cave comes to mind. It's also in Sign of the Southern Cross (from Mob Rules), another very interesting lyric: "A story told that can't be real somehow must reflect the truth we feel". He seems to be talking about mythology and art as a way to the truth here. I've come up with a working hypothesis that the dancer might refer to Shiva, the creator/destroyer god in Hinduism. His dance is supposed to symbolize the liberation from illusion and overcoming ignorance and destruction. He seems to be saying that in order to overcome ignorance and illusion and find the path to the truth we have to be willing to make sacrifices ("bleed for the dancer"). There's more that could be said about these lyrics, but I've been rambling long enough already, and probably not entirely coherent 😄.

"The lover of ife's not a sinner" is a great line, it can be read two ways. Somewhat hedinistically, he could be saying that it is not a sin to love life. An Aristotelian reading would be that in order to truly love life, you should not sin. I think he means both.

I would like to recommend the song The Shadow Hunter, by Angra, a brazillian metal band. It has interesting lyrics touching the nature of the divine, in an unortodox but very compelling interpretation. Hope you enjoy it!

I saw a great documentary by Mark Passio called Demystifying the Occult. In it he talks about how those who are active in the "dark occult" never create anything. It's always a borrowed symbol or idea that's inverted or subverted or whatever. I'm not an expert. But it seems true. And I like that line, "The devil is never a maker." Dio also has a line in Voodoo that says "nothing will be new 'cause I'm through." Coincidentally I just listened to Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach last night. So it's interesting that I'm watching this video and sure enough Dio says, "If it seems to be real, it's illusion." I don't want to ruin the book if you've never read it. I believe Dio is talking about life. Life here on Earth. He said that in an interview. That it's Heaven and Hell. And everyone has some job that they have to do. "Do me a wrong, you're a bringer of evil." If you've ever read the testament of Solomon, when he uses the ring to command the demons to come before him and each one describe what it does. What specific evils they each bring upon men. And the lyrics about "the dancer." That seems to be a metaphor for art or expression. Because dancers work very hard to learn their craft. Their careers are short and it's practically impossible to monetize what they do. I like your interpretation of Jesus' martyrdom to dispute that. I'll bet you could have enjoyed a good conversation with Dio about that. At the end Dio says it straight up that the world is filled with people who are very ready to lie and do whatever they must to get what they want. Even at the expense of your life. Finally art is the thing that lasts. Infinitely more value than "gold" which we don't get anyway! That's very interesting about God warning against kings. Fascinating. Steal your children. Wow, how very true. Nicely put. But, my dear brother, when you say that everyone in this world only deserves hell. I hope you don't really believe that. What an awful way to feel. Does a child choose to be born? Doing the best they can. Facing all these incredible pressures. And death at the end for their troubles. Then because of that deserve eternal torment. I'm sorry that's just not true. That's another Hegelian dialectic. And it's used, as they always are, to gain control of people's thoughts. We must be ready to step out of the either/ or scenario. One of my college professors said, "We must embrace ambiguity." He's right. We do not exist in a polarized environment. There are infinite variations and nuances in every part of our lives. That to me is much more proof of God than any dogma of an Archonic, petulant child god who will strike down with fury upon the very thing he created for doing the thing it was created to do. Thanks for the great video! I enjoy our talks.

He is credited as the one who brought the "devil horns" to us metalheads.....but it was used by him in a way that not many people are aware. He picked it up from his VERY Italian, old-school grandmother who used to give that sign and make a spitting sound. It was to ward off the "evil eye". It goes waaay back in European culture. And so now people judge it to be as some sort of conjuring of evil. Wildly wrong. I'm gonna check your playlist to see if you have any vids like Metallica's "Creeping Death" (about the Exodus and the plagues of Egypt) or even "Leper Messiah" and "Holier Than Thou" (the titles say it all). You'll love those. Lots to disect. Great vid! Liked and sub'd for more!

Your T.V. preachers...etc. Looking forward to "Creeping Death". Not to make suggestions, but give a listen to the studio version (for the lyrics and music) then give a look at the Moscow 1991 performance. 1.6 million people in total attendance and the energy level is off the charts, even 30 years later. It was the day Metallica ruled the U.S.S.R. !

I watched Joe Rogan’s podcast with James Hetfield a few years tears back and James said you could figuratively see the final cracks forming in the grip the U.S.S.R. had over the people. I realize there might be some minor inaccuracies between the lyrics and the ACTUAL story of the Passover, but then again.....how many other mainstream metal bands write about such things. I joke with my wife that it’s actually “Christian Rock” 😄. Can’t wait for the upload!

I've always considered this song to be about life in general. How people take advantage of others and how dreams are being crushed, how promises are being made and broken, and how in the end you'll be the fool if you believe in anyone else other than yourself.

They were a mid to late 70's English rock band produced by Mutt Lange. 1979's The Day The Earth Caught fire was a concept album about the end of the world that follows a guy to fame and how his ambition meant nothing because well, the world is over... A great album, many themes you would find interesting but, were I to request a reaction, it would be from an earlier album, Dinner At The Ritz. The song is called Walk On The Water. Please listen and go over the Black Sabbath song After Forever. It is on Masters Of Reality album. The lyrics are amazing, and I think you would enjoy breaking that one down!?

I like and respect the singers after Ozzy. But the best and most inspiring came from the original group. The original Black Sabbath have some of the most beautiful spiritual songs I have ever heard in my life. And as a teen in church they just wanted to play it backwards and ooh and ahhh at the evil they wanted to hear. The words and story are there for a reason

Yea, that one is really good. It is about twice the length so I went with the studio version.

To be honest I stopped listening to Black Sabbath when the original band broke up and when the originals,minus Geezer, made 13, I realized why. The original Black Sabbath was so much better, 13 proved it as with 13 they returned to their roots and made one of their best, though nothing is as good as the very first album, Black Sabbath. Ozzy is a classic example of the guy with a demon on one shoulder and an angel on the other!

I agree that their first album just might be the best debut album of any rock band - really hard to top that one. I appreciate your illustration of Ozzy with the demon on one shoulder and the angel on the other. If we're honest, most of us deal with that on the daily. What I want to do I don't do. I love the two Dio Sabbath albums more than Rainbow, Dio solo, Ozzy Sabbath , Ozzy solo etc.....Not sure there is really a bad song on either "Mob Rules" or "Heaven and Hell" I am a huge fan of both Ritchie Blackmore and Randy Rhoads but those albums are still the best.....

That's my absolute favorite song -- ever. I love that song. I think that everything about that song is as close as one can get to perfection as anything musical. Blackmore's solo is so rich and complex. I watched that reaction. She's a hoot! I will get to it eventually. I'd be a fanboy mess with that song!

I think nobody bleeds for the dancer may mean will you bleed for Christ. Will you make the hard choices in life to live up to the teachings of Christ. If martyrdom comes to you would you suffer for Jesus as Jesus suffered for us? It's a tough act to follow as the saying goes.

Evangelist's like Joel Olsteen seem to preach that you will be rewarded and good things will happen for your belief's. Maybe he never read the book of Job. I'm a Christian and have listened to metal for over 40 years. There are dark themes and messages but most of it is something that can be found in the Bible or a history book. If you are swayed by the lyrics to practice evil, then I think you are weak in character and faith. Dio rocks! Listen to the Ozzy era Black Sabbath song "After Forever" and tell me that they are evil or Satanist's.

I think you jumped the gun a bit on the line "Love can be seen as the answer"... He's, imho, singing it and meaning it to say that is' not actually the answer, he juxtaposes it immediately with a "but", going into a line that's very open for interpretation. The "Love can be seen as the answer" line is more akin to "Some might say: Love can be seen as the answer" from the tone and putting it together with the next line.

Second? My favorite is Richie Blackmore. Hendrix was definitely in a league of his own.

I'm glad you like music like this that disputes some of your own beliefs, but if you honestly think you and I deserve the worst imaginable punishment for a finite crime, I can only imagine what terrible things you must have done to think for a moment that any notion of eternal punishment is just. That's simply a monstrous idea, a psychological cudgel intended to coerce conformity. The god you for some reason respect is basically a mob boss: "Hey buddy, nice soul you got there...pity if something happened to it."

Interesting and thanks for contributing. Here's where we depart in our philosophy: He, the "God I for some reason respect" created everything. He calls the shots. You don't and I don't. Perfection is the expectation which we've proven time and time again that we cannot meet. He also made a way out, through Jesus, for our transgressions. So the 'terrible' things that I've done are breaking any of the Big 10. Since I have an advocate my perfection is tied to His perfection. He, Jesus, became sin so that I could take on His righteousness. It's actually a really good deal. Seriously, thanks for commenting. Hope to see you around some more.

Only truth in this world is Integrity, Ronnie James DIO was a man that had lot of it, look how he treated his fans and people that he had met , everybody remembers him as a great person, that's all it matters. All this stuff written above that curse entered the Earth, and that someone sacrificed himself for our sins its ridiculous crap. No one is gonna carry you trough life, your actions will determine your future ( Karma).

Corruption has been happening since just after the beginning of life. It doesn't negate the plan of God though. We are taken out of the equation, thankfully, and by faith can find freedom, healing, and restoration. It's a gift. And basically we don't have the power to screw it up. We can deny it. We can walk away and choose our own way. We, can even distort and misrepresent what it means to be a believer and follower. As for me, I'm just gonna hide out and keep on falling in surrender and forgiveness. I choose to believe. Peace to you. I hope you do the work of seeking for yourself even though there is much corruption. May you find truth. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to take another stab at some Dio songs down the road. Including some things from Rainbow, Dio, and probably Heaven & Hell.

If you have just a cursory knowledge of history.. I don't know why you can't believe in hell. It's actually alot easier to believe in hell as opposed to heaven
