Hey y’all, thanks a lot for the support, I really appreciate it 😂 One clarification regarding the swastikas, since I’m seeing it come up a bit: Bismarck’s swastikas were painted over prior to her fight with the HMS Hood, which is the version I’m depicting. The paint wore off over time, which is why the swastikas are now visible on the wreck. According to Bismarck's War Diary, 1307 hours on 22 May 1941: "Alarm beendet. Anschliessend auf Befehl Flotte Fliegersichtzeichen auf den Türmen und Hoheitszeichen auf Back und Schanz übermalt. Alarm ended. Subsequently, by the order of Fleet the aircraft identification insignias on the turrets and the national emblems [swastikas] on the forecastle and poop deck are painted over." Revell doesn’t include any swastikas in the kit, and even the flags are censored, which is a shame, but it’s understandable considering the laws in Germany. I believe other manufacturers like Trumpeter include workarounds that allow you to add them if you desire. Anyways that’s all, take care.

Same here. I had Bismarck, Prinz Eugen, Graf Spee, KGV, Yamato, Ise, Washington and PT-109. Most of them were Revell, some were from other companies I don't remember the name. The worst I ever had was a French frigate made by model company Heller. Drop the last two letters of their name and you get the proper name for their products.

April 25, 2024 - Like a number of commenters here, I just stumbled on to this channel and I'm very pleased that I did. Before talking about me.. my favorite subject😁 I'll say that I found Boxman's ability to mix valuable information about model building while making humorous comments very entertaining. I actually found this video quite mesmerizing👍👍😊 I built a lot of Revell, Aurora, Monogram etc. kits. You name it, I probably built it. Airplanes, tanks, self-propelled artillery, various kinds of military vehicles. I think the only ship model I made was of the USS Canberra missile cruiser, (named in honor of the Australian WWII cruiser the HMAS Canberra). It turned out pretty well I think. Some of my tank models fell victim to my mental condition 😟of loving to see things blow up using firecrackers. 😁I still have a large envelope containing the instructions and diagrams for most of the models I built in the mid 1950’s.

Same here, I'm 73 and wish I had saved instructions too. My big score was saving decal sheets. Sometimes I would get lucky and and find 2, 3 even a couple of times I had 4 sheets stuck together. I just retired on Dec., 31st, 2023 after a 52 year career as an aircraft mechanic. 20 years of my career , was spent in the Navy. I was able to work on many of the same planes I built models of, when I was a boy. While in the Navy, I worked on the F-4, A-4, A-3, EC-121, T-28, S-2, C-1, A-6, F-14, and H-2 ASW helicopter. As a Civil Service aircraft mechanic, I worked on the F-14, and at US Air the DeHaviland -8, and for the USCG - the HU-25, MH-60, C-144, and C-27. While in the Navy I was on 2 aircraft carriers, the Forrestal and the Nimitz. I think up to 1970, I built every model plane I could lay my hands on. 🙂

@@redr1150r April 28, 2024 - I salute you my fellow vet. I served for three years in the U.S. Army during both the Berlin and Cuban Missile crisis. Your career sounds very interesting and certainly impressive. Sadly, a divorce in early adulthood, and a lot of moving over the decades means I lost all of the models I made in my mid-teens. The only thing I was able to hold on to from those years, was part of my collection of W. Britain company lead soldiers. A box containing five charging 42nd. Foot, The Black Watch Scottish Infantry and a bagpiper originally cost $2.00 back in the 1950's. That same box, if in mint condition, is worth at least $200.00 today.😲 Sadly, I lost the boxes long ago, and all of my 1950's era W. Britain soldiers are in very good condition, but can't be considered in mint condition. In the past twenty years I have been about to collect W. Britain figures that are real works of art detail wise. Each infantry figure can cost as much as $40.00+, and a figure mounted on a horse is much more. I have four displays representing battles the 42nd. took part in prior to WW I, including Waterloo. Thank you for your interesting comments and I wish you the very best in your retirement years. I once build a 1:577 scale model of the Bismarck from Revell. It was simply not good. The "detail" ,if you can call it that, was simply awful as it was non-existent. Years later I built a 1:200 scale model of Bismarck from Amati. After that a 1:200 scale model of HMS Hood (which is still not finished, it sits at roughly 90% and I cannot find motivation to finish it) and a 1:200 scale model of Scharnhorst, (which is also unfinished at around 50%). All models are from Amati and the detail work is AMAZING!!!! So, if you can: go for Amati in 1:200 scale! Each of my models has over 4000 pieces! BTW: I can only recommend getting a handdrill like a Dremel. It makes many things easier.

The "building an entire ship in 19 and a half minutes" (elapsed assembly time in this video) is not that far off the mark, because Tamiya Extra Thin Cement bonds and dries so fast. Long gone are the days of yore when you used "goopy" tube glue that took 12-24 hours to cure. Best method is to hold the parts together then brush the Tamiya cement around the seams and hold it for 5 seconds, then move on to the next assembly. The wicking capillary action of the Tamiya Cement does most of the work. EDIT: the uploader said roughly the same the same thing, blah blah blah

My fine motor control is pretty poor on account of having pretty nasty ADHD, but painting anything by hand became even more difficult when I develop nerve damage as well. I found that firmly securing the item that I'm painting first, then using a magnifying glass with clamps (like one uses when soldering) to help hold the brush itself is my next step. Finally, I keep my elbows on the table so that all I'm moving are my forearms, and I try to have a broad of a point of surface with the brush as possible when I go to move it. It takes practice and patience to build technique when painting with the brush on a pivot. Unfortunately, when things get so small that I'm having to use an exacto knife or other scalpel-like implement to apply the paint to tiny tiny surfaces (like the pupil and sclera in the eyes of a 40k or Necromunda fig), that's when I have to start getting super creative about how to best apply the pigment or paint without screwing things up beyond all hope of repair.

MPC kits were the best in the 70's; well molded, and the ships had single piece hulls. They were probably simpler kits overall. I built the Missouri when I was about 15, which turned out pretty well, although I painted the main gun barrels flat black with silver tips because I thought it looked cool. Still do. And Revell still gives me hives. Edit: Just realized the Missouri kit was Monogram, which were also quality. MPC seemed to have the highest grade styrene. Revell kits suffered from the most flash & warpage. Also, very nice build. 👍

I use to work around mistakes in the kit, because I don't make mistakes, I'm just too lazy to fix all the mistakes the people who make these things make, by renaming boats and planes. So when I made my Revell 1/700 Bismarck I renamed it Fistmarck. Which is more apt than it should be. I also have a short fuse. When I deal with cow and horse dung. But that's ok. Lots of parts for my stack. It became a diorama, with Fistmarck at the bottom, and muddy mud water above it. And on the sides. Resin is damn expensive. And useful.

I don't care for ships in general, but you saying so made me check: The Bismarck's 'pea shooters' had the same range as the Yamato's bigger cal and where much more precise. Of course the smaller grenades had less impact, but then they where way faster to reload.

From my memory as a kid - Revell was a toss up for crappy with Monogram. A total so far of 17 likes. 😲💖😊 My den/office looks like a small war museum with ready made models of military vehicles, some are ( 1:32 scale), a model of an M1A1 Abrams tank that is larger than a toaster oven (measuring approximately 18 inches in length), small replicas of WWII and modern war planes, helicopters, books and framed prints of various paintings including the Charge of the Light Brigade. In short, I'm the guy who as a child said, "When I grow up.. my house is gonna be filled with military replicas!"😁 I will be glad to answer any comments or replies sent to me here. Stay well all.

I never assemble before having painted the parts, as it is very hard to reach certain areas with the brush or spray gun after parts are assembled. And also, before assembling, i make sure that i have all tools that are required or optional, so i can get the maximum out of a model kit. I guess, you should do the same, instead of boiling with frustration and anger.

To be fair to Bismarck with her main battery size, most battleships/battlecruisers she was likely to face, those being the Royal Navy's battle line, also had 15" guns which did their jobs just fine. True, Nelson and Rodney has 16" guns, but that was just two ships. The rest were ships like the Queen Elizabeth class with 15s, Hood with 15s, the Revenge class with 15s, and the Renown class battlecruisers also with 15s. Bismarck certainly had many issues as resultant from Germany's lack of battleship construction experience post WW1 (like how vulnerable her rudder's control systems were which proved fatal), but I wouldn't say her guns were her problem. Keep in mind that the Iowa class didn't hit the open seas until 1943 and were also largely tied up in the Pacific anyways. Bismarck would only have to fight the Rodneys and which ever of the North Carolina or South Dakota class ships could be spared to the Atlantic if she'd lived that long.

You’re absolutely correct. I was broadly referring to Bismarck’s contemporaries, mostly the treaty battleships of the 30’s, which either matched or surpassed Bismarck in multiple categories while being considerably less massive. But yes, Bismarck’s 15” guns weren’t much of a limiting factor at all in a real scenario.

G'day Boxman, it's a dog of a kit; you know it, I know it, sadly, Revell knows it but doesn't care. Anyway, you made this bow-wow build a great deal of fun. I've not caught your act before so you've got a new subscriber. I don't get it when any kit maker gets you to drill holes. Like they can't put them in at mould stage... of course they can. Not even an attempt at putting actual holes at the end of the guns; not even a depression to drill into, if you have micro-bits. Revell is lazy these days. They went through a period of decent model moulding when they actually attempted to make their bits and pieces approach the stated scale. Not so much now. Yet their price points continue to edge skyward. Still, what do I know; I specialise in WW2 aircraft. I really enjoyed your narration; so few people who bother to make build videos also pay attention to what they say and how they say it during the build. I suspect you are a much better modeller than your self-deprecating humour would have us believe. Your D.I.C.K. rating is a stroke of genius and you deserved the finished look score you gave yourself. You turned a 'sow's ear' into a delicious roast pork feast! Cheers and all the best, Bill H. Hobart TAS.

I am more into Aircraft modelling mostly 1/72 and for some reason i just cannot get on with Revell products in the early years it was crude fit where it touches. they have tried hard over the years to improve but i still find there parts a bit clunky and crude. i know that most of there range are re boxed from other company's like Matchbox etc. i don't know if its down to the type of plastics Revell use. though i have to say Mister Craft is running a close second in the "no love no enjoyment" contest so i have given them both a wide berth over the years

Also, if anything, Yamato was the most powerful BB of the time. Bismarck had moderate firepower and the main reason IMO why it is so well remembered is down to the fact it was German, and Germany in theory should not have anything close to that displacement.

Well, when Bismarck came online, there were only 7 ships in the world with 16 inch guns and they were all somewhat slow compared to Bismarck. I'm not saying it's not doodoo, but 15 inch is perfectly serviceable for 1939... heck, King George V was commisioned later that year with 14 inch guns.
