Revell B-17G

I show you how I weathered the B-17 Turbos and how to paint other parts of the plane. To start, the B-17G is painted in an aluminum color from a spray can. The paint I used tends to eat plastic if not primed first, so you will see this mistake in the video and I left it so you can see what it does. After the paint dried, I masked off certain areas to represent replaced panels in the aircraft. I sprayed a chrome style paint to do this. I suggest light coats instead of one heavy coat. Next I start weathering the Superchargers, or Turbos depending on who you ask. I paint an Testors Model Master International Orange around the blades of the turbo. I follow this up with a Titanium Buffing Metalizer brushed on. I however, do not buff it. This is typically an airbrush paint. While that dries, I take a small drill bit and create a "bullet hole" in the side of a "new panel" where I put a nice size finger print in fresh paint. I sanded the fingerprint down and weathered this. I make a pink paint using Testors Enamel paints in the small bottles using Red and White. I thin this down with Enamel Thinner to make it watery and a see through coat, almost like a wash or glaze. I paint this on in a sporadic pattern leaving some spots darker in different areas. I paint on some Brown and blot it with a piece of foam to make a natural rust type pattern. I then do another wash coat of the Light Pink in various areas. A thin downed Tan paint is added in various spots and dabbed with foam too. I also show how I mixed up all the paint for this using the various colors and a brush with a bit of thinner on it. A light dab of grey is applied to the ends of a few of the parts to the exhaust portions. The Olive Drab is airbrushed, using a Badger Patriot 105, onto the engine cowels and covers, plus it is sprayed onto the front of the aircraft. I use some Microscale liquid mask in certain areas to make masking easier. I make sure I get a good bit onto my masking tape so it comes off with the tape itself. I paint several coats of the Olive Drab color. The windows are sprayed with the same color I sprayed the fuselage with. Because the parts were not primed and the liquid mask was not applied properly, the type of paint ate through the plastic and ruined it. I still used it anyway since this will not be the first one of these planes I do. The Tail is painted with the Blue Angel Blue color. The F decal is cut out leaving excess and placed onto tape. I trace this outline and cut out that new F to use as masking. This will leave enough of the Aluminum of the plane to show through as was the case in most of these planes. I did forget to do the Triangle accidentally though. The props tips are sprayed the Aluminum and the Blue Angel Blue is handpainted on by my own choice. With a cordless drill, I make a small hole in the exhaust ports on the turbos. Once that hole is drilled, I used a bigger bit to make a bigger hole. The smaller bit gave me more control and a starting point to work with. The back of the engine firewalls were painted Chromate Green. I did this by hand too.

@@PlasticModelBuilder, cannot agree more. Have you ever thought about using pigments for rusting effects? I used them on a gunpla diorama and a Vietnam era tank, and the results were very good.
