Once they went nationwide with their communications. It’s downfall was that managers could not efficiently communicate with workers out in the field since the cost of group call was enormous. The second issue was that managers could not monitor what their workers were doing in the field since most workers spent the time on private phone to phone conversations.

Fun fact: Nextel (specifically, the iDEN protocol) was actually considered a trunked radio system, and *not* a cellular phone service, meaning they could operate on the same 800MHz SNR bands that commercial trunking systems use, and also lacked the legal protection from eavesdropping due to it not being considered a cell service.

I see ads for Rapid Radios on Facebook ALL THE TIME and their claims are always very misleading so I make it a point to report every ad I see as "misleading/scam." It's really unfortunate because the vast majority of comments on their ads show that the people buying these radios truly don't understand how they work and they're getting pulled in by the misleading claims or because it's not being made 100% clear that the radios use cellular networks. Extremely frustrating to see companies taking advantage of peoples' ignorance.

The biggest issue, aside from the marketing, is the fact that so much of the time when out and about in the northern half of Minnesota, there is no cell service. I have a phone, if I have cell service I'm good to go. Having said that, the idea that they'd work seamlessly across multiple cell networks does give it at least some appeal. If one of the big 3 has a tower in the area, then you'd have some communication.

A lot of small businesses are going to subscription POC systems. Cheaper and easier to roll out and maintain then a LMR radio / repeater system. Zello Business (subscription) is a thing. you showed the iCom and I think even Motorola has a POC network and radios. The business POC systems even have fleet dispatching software, with GPS tracking and some can interface with a businesses existing LMR systems. POC has its place but it sure isn't the (will never fail, SHTF solution) that Rapid Radio advertises to be. I think RR has a good daily use system especially for groups / familys that have no interest in VHF/UHF, licensing and rules. But as long as there ads are misleading they wont get a dime from me.

What is the advantage of PoC over cellular phones when it requires cellular coverage to operate? Yes, PTT is better than needing to dial someone every time you need to talk, but PoC is being sold as a way to communicate in emergencies. Heck, in Texas you can drive for over an hour on an interstate and not have cell coverage. How is having a radio that operates over cellular going to help then? Oh, and anything that uses RF to communicate can be considered “radio” whether it is a wireless WIFI router, garage door opener, cell phone, or ham radio. Remember model airplane controllers on 6M? Remember how they required a license to operate? Yes, they use radio transmitters.

Jason, you don't have to go 2 hours east of Grapevine Texas to find that you have 1 bar of T-Mobile (in winter, on a hill) and 0 bars of ATT and Verizon. If it weren't for WiFi calling, my cellphone would be useless here at the house in rural east Texas. We gave up on dog-tracking collars that relied on cellular networks. Never mind zombie apocalypse, or hurricanes... there is still a LOT of the USA that has no cellular coverage. If the cellular provider doesnt have enough customer base to support coverage, those POC "radios" are POS (no good). P.S. I can zello from my no-SIM Androids just fine as long as I'm in range of my WiFi... "free" (if you already have a smartphone/tablet and WIFI-enabled Internet (DSL, Fiber, whatever).

Since when did Verison go to GSM format??? I thought they were CDMA and NOT GSM. It’s only in the USA that the use of CDMA and TDMA formats. The rest of the world is on GSM. FACT, all cell phones are actually radios run by a microcomputer. It’s a pity the general public is not aware of this. As a radio tech we all know that "mobile phones" are actually radios. As for carrying your radios on a cruise ships is a bad idea. Many workers in the cruise terminals do not know their regulations of the countries or their own employer. Many types of radios are prohibited in countries you might visit on a cruise ship. Now for satellite phones, they are basically considered as cell phones on most cruise ships. Still it’s a good idea to check with the cruise company to see what their exact restrictions are.

It’s also a lot easier to switch phones when one dies, pop out the sim and pop it into another device. The only issue is the size of sim used. They come in three flavors in todays world, standard, mini and micro. Giving the customer the ability to switch out their phones at will, eliminates having to hire employees to do this work registering a new phone to an existing number. Economically logical when it comes to reducing overhead for a very large company.
