Revealing My Roth IRA Portfolio + How To Pick Investments for YOUR Roth IRA (2022)

I reveal my entire Roth IRA portfolio and the passive investing strategy approach I use which includes ETFs. I also explain what is a Roth IRA and give you some beginner tips on how to choose what's in yours.
A Roth IRA is a tax free savings account (if you're not in the US - you can look up similar ones). Enjoy!

1. What is a Roth IRA
The Roth IRA is an individual retirement account that anyone can start provided they have something called EARNED income. This means that you need to make wages/salaries/tips, so basically you need to have a pay stub or W2 or 1099 income.
You can open a Roth IRA at almost any brokerage firm, and the main advantage of having a Roth IRA is that your earnings and profits are growing tax free. That means when you retire, and you withdraw all the earnings on this account, you won't pay ANY taxes on it.
That's the biggest benefit of this account, so since all our earnings grow tax free - there are going to be some investing strategies that we can employ within the Roth IRA to really take advantage of this fact.
2. What's in MY Roth IRA?
My Roth IRA has around 29k invested and holds the following:
VTI, which is a Total Stock Market ETF - $13k
VEU - gives you broad access to international markets that are developing and emerging - about $8.8k
BNDW - 4k world bond ETF, this gives me access to bonds in the world
VOO - $3.3k S&P 500 ETF.
Now initially when I started my Roth IRA, I chose these three funds only, and the split at the time was 40% VTI, 40% VEU, and 20% BND.
Now at the time, the reasoning was pretty simple, I was in my late 20s, I wanted to have exposure to the US and International stock markets, which are riskier than bonds, but I didnt want to be 100% in equities - and I wanted a passive investment that I did not have to actively manage, hence why I chose ETFs.
Based on my risk tolerance at the time - which was moderate/moderately aggressive for the next 30+ years, I chose an 80/20 split of equities to bonds, and I wanted my equities to be hedged across US and emerging world, just in case something happened with the US market, I still had the international ones to bolster me up. This was diversifying not only with the ETFs, but with the international markets as well.
3. How should you pick investments for YOUR Roth IRA?
1. Assess your risk tolerance (conservative, aggressive, etc)
2. Identify the type of investor you are (passive vs active)
3. Pick investments that are beneficial for your Roth.
You can invest in:
ETFs like I do - these are great, passively managed, they also will pay dividends and those dividends won't be taxed in the tax sheltered Roth.
Individual Stocks - these are also great to hold in a Roth IRA since earnings are tax free, over a long term time horizon that could be amazing.
Bonds - since you cant reinvest interest payments from Bonds, having bonds in your roth IRA could be a good investment since the Roth IRA will protect you against taxes of those payments.
Real Estate Investment Trusts - Reits are especially good because they're required to pay 90% of their income as dividends to their shareholders, which are typically taxed in a normal account, but in a Roth the dividends will be tax sheltered so you get a ton of value.

The concept of mini-retirement changed my life. I'm no longer waiting for some retirement paradise when I'm 65. It helps to know how to fund the lifestyle. You know, making money while you sip that piña colada by the beach does help. I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise.

Got it! Buying stocks during a recession when prices are down could be a good move. You might get them at a lower price and sell later when they go up. Just do your homework and be aware of the risks before diving in!

While your 401k and IRA account would likely continue to grow even after you stop contributing to it, that growth might be limited by the Market, your personal plans and also other factors. For this I see need for annuities. I still will like to know how to compound $2m and above in retirement without holding cash.

It is important to consider a financial planner early, before the last year of retirement. I am currently working with a financial planner called Jason Herman Pierce. I really appreciate his cutting edge financial strategies. It really works for me. His vast knowledge of international market and tax implications allow us to moderately diversify my investment portfolios, minimize tax liabilities and access new markets with potential high returns. And I am two year from retirement and my financial goals is secured.

Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Instead of trying to predict and prognosticate the stability of the market and precisely when the change is going to happen, a better strategy is simply having a portfolio that’s well prepared for any eventually, that’s how some folks' been averaging 150K every 7week these past 4months according to Bloomberg.

Additionally, any earnings on investments can also be withdrawn tax-free and penalty-free, Not sure how much to contribute, I'm still at a crossroads deciding if to liquidate my $338k stock portfolio.

Putting well-earned money into the stock market can be over emphasized for first-time investors, unlike a bank where interest is sure thing! Well, basically times are uncertain, the market is out of control, and banks are gradually failing. First thing you should check is to see if your employer offers company matching in a 401K. Go for that first because that is FREE (nontaxable) money. Next, pay off your student debt, if any. And pay that off ASAP. Next, open an HSA through your employer (if they offer one) and start contributing. Everyone needs health/dentalcare at some point and you are no exception. It's nice that Uncle Sam pays a small part of that healthcare bill. Then if you have money, open a ROTH.

The Total stock market index fund and S&P 500 index fund has huge overlap and essentially cover mostly all the same stocks so having both funds is double exposure and just adds needless complication to your portfolio. The VTI fund is heavily tilted towards large cap stocks which is what comprises the S&P 500 index fund. This is why returns are so similar between these 2 funds.

I believe that both funds are cap-weighted as well, so the majority of your money is definitely going to the same companies. Just buy the s&p (probably a tad lower er). Actually, most investors can buy an S%P index fund and be done with it. Don't need all of the other "exposure." That's just marketing. Those companies are pretty much all over the globe, so there is your "international" exposure. I'd be 100% stocks if I were you until like 50 years old. That bond etf probably hasn't kept up with inflation, but haven't checked. That said you are investing at your comfort level and that's the important thing. You are starting young and that is your greatest asset. Love the hustle and help you offer. Keep it up!

Hey, Humphrey, love your channel! I have a question that I hope you can help me make clear. If I invested in dividend paying stock or REIT through my IRA, are my dividends being automatically reinvested in my retirement account for compound interest or are they just being accumulated there until I reach the age of 59 1/2.

I have my company 401k & Roth 401k going with 20% diversified in the options I have available. My company doesn’t offer a match but I am a union employee and I will qualify for the pension fund next year so it’s a loose match. Now if I become a corporate employee I could get a match. My traditional IRA I have it pretty well diversified now with several ETFs and a few company stocks. Hopefully with long term holding and dividends reinvesting I can build up this retirement egg quickly. I may look into converting my IRA into a Roth soon.

If someone from outside the US were to invest in an S&P 500 ETF, would there be a risk of FX losses when withdrawing investments at retirement? Likewise, would you be susceptible to FX gains or losses when you invest in ETF's of stocks outwith the US in your own ROTH IRA? Good content by the way, keep it up :)

  • @humphrey

Great point, I think you may be susceptible to FX, you should look into your country's funds that allows you to invest in a US S&P500 etf without directly having to buy the US version.

couple of questions.... Why do you have BNDW ? Do you really expect interest rates in the short term to go lower? or even in the next 10 years? Why not hedge with a REIT or something more lucrative? Aren't you just paying a premium price for bonds now if interest rates rise? And if they lower - other investments will do better? I don't understand the BNDW play at all. Please explain. Thank you. I was going to ask other questions like lack of exposure to voog but I think they may be too complicated right now so I will start with the first one.

Hello Humphrey, I recently opened up a Roth IRA. I'm utilizing the 3 fund portfolio method, with just a couple shares of 3 different stocks. Am I supposed to be realizing the gains or do I ignore that and just contribute money every month if I'm on a long-term growth strategy? Could you maybe do a video discussing unrealized gains/losses, the different types of trades, and how and when to rebalance your portfolio?
