The first language I tried to learn was Spanish, because in my state Spanish speakers are usually paid more. It was a terrible motivator for me, I succeeded when I changed to the language of several of my favorite authors and found it enriched my mind and soul.

I started learning German in my late 40s. I have made so many life-long friends because of it. Because of German, I have had so many experiences that I never thought I’d have including going to Germany and visiting my language partners. German will always be my “first love” but now I just started taking Russian. My only regret is not learning languages earlier. Don’t listen to people that say you’re too old to learn, you can do this! Just do it! 😀

I'm 41 just started learning standard german a little over a year ago love it. Also learning about the culture. I use easy german, wdr and ndr for listening. How about yourself?

My desire to learn German led me to enrolling in university at 52 years old! I am now 55 with one semester to graduating with a bachelor's degree in Foreign Language, major German and a minor in History (mainly German focused). I have maintained an A average throughout with only two Bs in a couple history classes. I am an inducted member of Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society. I had the amazing opportunity to take a summer semester in Berlin, Germany and Vienna, Austria. I had planned to take a full fall semester in Germany by scholarships, but COVID-19 made that dream impossible. One of the most amazing experiences of my life was that short summer semester! Learning German has influenced my High School daughter to also learn German. Through my German professor, I learned my daughter was eligible at 15 years old to study in Germany for a year. She can do this through her High School years. She is a freshman, so, her entire High School education can be in one of the world's best school systems! All these things would never have occurred without the desire to learn a new language!! I am currently learning even more German with your course packages in Storylearning. Thank you!!!

I've heard that argument so many times, that we should get rid of foreign language classes so we can do coding classes. Funny enough it all seems to come from monolingual English speakers. Like do they just expect everyone to just learn English for them? Frustrating argument.

Im 50 and that was being said even when I was in junior school.. the problem is that or with the ways they "teach" languages you dont have English kids .. thinking is the the past or present participle ... should I use the pro noun or the noun... ..but just read speak repeat .. learn to spell read speak write. if they taught languages like that ie like you learn as a child ..then it would not be an issue. also there is somethings which are just quite hard when you speak one language and not another like verb placement etc. etc..

I'm a native trilingual (sort of - I'm a native hearer of Spanish and my French is out of practice). I'm not a native speaker of 6502, which I learned in my teens. I now write programs in C++ and am starting to learn Haskell.

To be fair, you don't learn in school that well because of the lack of submersion. I took French for four years from Jr high to high school. I definitely don't speak French...

Honestly, if you just look at actual job opportunities and statistics, if you know how to code and you speak English you are going to be much better off than someone who doesn't know how to code but speaks 9 other languages. if you're goal is just to make money, coding/IT/business skills and certifications are more useful than foreign languages. That said I think speaking another language is invaluable for other aspects of life.

@@joshuddin897 ya, aliens don't need to know any extra languages, its all stored inside of their brains. ive taken a liking to the idea that elon is from the base reality, and comes down to spark an interest in advanced tech to move forward our timelines progress. The closer the simulated world gets to the base world the more likely that the reality could begin to produce alternative outcomes, which will feed a database that monitors all simulated realities. That theory is sort of in line with what is know as Ancestor Simulation theory, and that theory has it that the simulations are modeled exactly after the history prior to the singularity, that an advanced species which could be human, or now completely robotic are trying to run as many simulated realities to figure out how they came to be or how they could have done things differently, to make for the most optimal base reality. Just some sci fi type of ideas. but if you are open minded, its fun to ponder any possibility. There is a saying that Fact is stranger than fiction, so barring your mindset based on social taboos would be a shame.

I speak 4 languages on a daily basis and find it very useful, especially when travelling. I have learned some basics of 2 more languages. Even if it wasn't helpful at all, I just enjoy the process of learning, "cracking" the code, finding some resemblance between the languages etc. PS: But I am not a billionaire lol

My first thought exactly. Similarly I once read a newspaper article listing all the different languges spoken by pupils at an English school, and Swahili and Kiswahili were listed as two languages.

I'm 48 and only speak English, but I did just get your short stories in Norwegian book, so we'll see. fingers crossed!

It’s so true about languages opening doors to new opportunities. I am a native English speaker, started learning Spanish because I enjoyed it, am currently spending a month in Argentina, and might end up moving here. I spoke some German as a child since my grandmother is from Germany, and once I increase my fluency, I can go visit extended family there. We also have family reunions in Germany about every ten years. From starting to study Korean, I was able to meet and befriend incredible people who immigrated from Korea and/or came to the US for university.

I am currently learning both Spanish and Mandarin. I took 2 years of Spanish in high school, but didn’t learn/remember a whole lot. It’s so widely spoken in the USA, though, so such a useful language to study! My sister is adopted from China and I think Mandarin, apart from being challenging and impressive to know how to read and speak, would also be another useful language to know!

I think Zuckerberg's partner is Chinese so that would make sense why his little.one is learning it. Personally, I know Spanish to a B2-C1 level and it's only benefited me career wise. I work for the landscape industry so it makes me insanely marketable in the USA and the coworkers that speak very little English that I work with seem more comfortable with me once they realize I know Spanish ❤

@@Adrian13rams actually she is American and her parents are Cantonese speakers from Vietnam, not China. I don’t know anything about her home life specifically but I do know many Vietnamese Cantonese speakers (Hoa people) who do not speak or understand any Mandarin. The reason Cantonese speakers in modern China also speak Mandarin is because it’s taught in schools, the languages are not mutually intelligible without study, although there are some structural similarities which would make it easier for a Cantonese speaker to learn Mandarin and as you point out they use the same written language.

The benefits of learning another language is your ability to see another perspective and sometimes think differently. Also the science is in being at least bi lingual is that it can help prevent but not for definite Alzheimers ... In my own case English native obviously and at one stage was quite able to speak Irish Gaelic and was okay with French via school. However, now with half German kids I have stepped up learning German but its hard to switch when you work in technical fields and all documentation dealing with vendors etc. is via the medium of English. However, I intend to get German to the level of C1 which I can do when required with English but also really get back my Gaelige as well.. I will revisit french but I love the sound of Russian and all the brilliant literature in Russian to tackle. I suppose my point is sometimes I despair with people only learning a language for "businesss reasons" you can miss on so much just taking it as it is.. my previous partner was a polygot English German Swedish ... I hear it gets easier if you if learn more and more but its very easy to "brain freeze" particularily with spelling I find ..but onwards upwards toddler steps etc. I do have an issue with how languages are taught ..straight in verbs nouns pro nouns etc. of course its important but just listen repetition .. and OUTPUT ... ..like a child then get or aquire a functional level bring in the spelling and vocabulary.. now I give your story reading the exception as you are also just gently inputting and getting a feel for the language but you also have to try to form sentences type write.. .. the reason the world is upside down on this is that it sticks to archaic methods of teaching..

I used to live near a community of German speakers in the US. Out of curiosity, I started learning the language and soon discovered a passion. Without a clear purpose I simply learned; then, at some point I met someone that suggested me to continue my studies in Germany. I never really considered doing anything special with the language--other than reading literature and philosophy. But upon hearing these words something moved inside me. This passion was now fueled with a purpose. I knew I had to do it. Now, I am studying Artificial Intelligence in Germany. I decided to take the degree in German to further improve my German and challenge myself. Even though I already passed C1, and I am studying in German, I never stopped learning German a single day. After years, the language still sparks in me a child-like amusement when I discover new words. German language is something else... anyways I digress. Wish you all the best in your language learning journey.

This video is a great example of the deft story telling by Olly, which makes his videos compelling to me. And also why I eventually purchased the 101 Stories for Spanish. I got started reading it and I realized this seems really good for me. I just recently got it but with the first conversation I was picking up a little new vocabulary and encouraged by the fact that I could decode much of what was going on, even though I didnt know all the words. Anyway, I really appreciate the videos as entertaining and encouraging me to keep spending time with my Spanish.

Love the vids... Just one tip if I may.... When you show something we have to read, stick to the German rule of 2 seconds per line so that we stand a chance of reading everything without having to pause or re-wind. That would be great, thanks! By the way I speak English, Français, Ελληνικά und Deutsch. I‘ve currently challenged myself to learn 5 languages at once: Turkish, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Arabic. I learned English in a very young age it raised my grades in both school & college helped me graduate helped me in my job in the oil sector where a lot of people don't speak my native tongue & made me get my US tourist visa after applying only once

I grew up listening to my dad speaking Egyptian Arabic, but he only spoke English to me. I somehow picked it up. Later I learnt French, Italian for my degree. At 40 I started learning Spanish I started teaching it at 44. I'm now teaching Egyptian Arabic, French, English, Italian and Spanish. My mum speaks Egyptian Arabic she's English. She's good at it.

I work in a multicultural, widely recognized financial intuition not because I studied banking which I did not but as I studied English. I could learn Anti-Money-Laundering mechanisms/ schemes just because I knew English. So I recommend everyone to learn foreign languages, it is not rocket science and it gives so many opportunities one would not even imagine doing themselves in future ;) Additionally, there is a lot of information which is not translated into our mother tongue and those who can speak foreign languages are always ahead as they have access to more information in different languages. I speak Polish as my native language, English as my second language and recently I started learning Spanish and I plan to add later on French.

They learn the language of Money and they employ experts in every aspect they require 😀

Okay, I am interested to see if there are other diverse multilinguals/ polyglots. Examples: Musicians, athletes, etc... An off the wall suggestion is board game players, that speak other languages. (Chess will likely be the most popular) I will start with the Polgar sisters Susan, Sofia and Judit all who are high level chess players and all are multilingual. (Hungarian, Spanish, English, Hebrew, German, Russian, Esperanto) Magnus Carlsen (English/ Norwegian), also understands Swedish and Danish.

I'm nowhere near fluent, but I did strike up a conversation with a Polish-German immigrant at an open house. That was a lot of fun. Ironically I only got this time because the parents of my kiddos all failed to show up.

Very cool. I've noticed a lot of sports people speak languages as well. Nico Rosberg is fluent in German, French, English, Spanish and Finnish. He also speaks Italian.

I always wanted to learn Polish but I did some research and was also told by many I should learn Russian first because it's the most widely spoken Slavic language, plus it will help me greatly when I start Polish. So, I did and I'm loving it and I can't wait to dip into Polish once I learn enough Russian.

Olly, as a self-learner of English, (and basic Spanish, just because I like the language), I'd like to know why do you think some people are better at learning the languages themselves? What in your opinion, makes it possible for them to learn it easier than others? Do you think there is a certain quality that enables them to do that? I think having a good (musical/phonetical) ear helps. Would love to hear what you think. Maybe you could make a video about it?

Don't be dyslexic. If you are not dyslexic you can learn any language in 1 month. If you are dyslexic you max out at 0.9 languages including your native language.

Mike Bloomberg had said he wanted to be a physics major in college. But at John's Hopkins, where he went to college, in order to major in physics, he would have had to take German, to be able to read important physics papers in their original language. Not wanting to make the effort, he decided to major in business instead. Schade.

What a shame.

I have a question for you(about learning strategies): I want to teach my children both English and German as a foreign language. What method should I use so they won't mix up the two languages? For example, should I teach them 1 week English, 1 week German? Or should I teach them different words at the same time, for example while I teach them the colours in English, I teach them the numbers in German, so they don't mix up the different connotations? Or teach them both and focus on minimal pairs? Maybe I should teach them one language first and then commence with the other? I would really like some expert advice here, because I don't want to confuse them.

I'm not an expert, but I do speak both English and German and I'm currently learning Japanese and Korean, so here's how I try to avoid mixing up words. I think it's important to read a lot, because it gives you a good feeling for what e.g. German words "look" like (or sound like for audiobooks). You eventually pick up on spelling cues, e.g. lots of german nouns and in "-ung", "-schaft", and "-chen" - all of which never pop up in english.

@@bogdanstamenic2836 thank you. I admire your language learning capacities. Yes, I also read a lot, and agree that's a good method of learning. However, I think that's rather for advanced learners and for older ones, like teenagers and adults. My main problem is, how to teach these to my children, from a beginner level . My daughter is 3 yo and she cannot read yet. -- On the other hand, like I said I agree that reading is an important part of language acquisition, it's important to keep in mind- just for more advanced learners.

Learning a new langauge has created many strange expiriences for me. I started teaching myself Japanese about six years ago. I was able to do a TEDx talk last year in Japanese, and I've been asked to come on TV shows in Japan. I was guest for a full hour on a show called ワタシが日本に住む理由, because I've also been teaching myself the almost-dead Akita dialect. I got to write an article for the local paper in JP, and I write Tanka poems that get published in the paper sometimes. I also was able to translate an old story called "Agubanba" into English that a youtuber aquintance of mine made into a short animated video. My Japanese is ok, and there have been some expiriences here in Japan that were awful, but those moments were great.

Do you think Japanese is still an economically advantageous language? One of my goals for the future is to open an international engineering firm and I am thinking about potential Asian markets. I like Japanese culture but I am also thinking of future business opportunities. I also know most Asian languages will take years to learn; so obtaining an idea now would be incredibly helpful.

@@LLL124Original well that will really depend on what industry you'll work in, but Japanese isn't completely worthless. Chinese and Hindi might be more advantageous depending on how their economies develop. Japan has been in an economic slump for almost 40 years now with little signs of recovery.

I agree that you never know when a language you have been learning will be useful and profitable for you. I've been learning french since I was 13 and all the jobs I've had so far required french. I've worked as a teacher, interpretor for French kids during their camp in Poland, forum moderator, waiter in France. I mean I've never had a serious full time job yet but I would love to have a job related to french or languages in general

If you’re in a situation where you’re gonna be around foreign language speakers for an extended amount of time, it would be more beneficial to learn the language rather than rely on a translator. Though the translator would be good for people who often travel to see the world and don’t have the time or ability to learn the language of every new place they visit.

It’s said in the video that Qod Nisanov speaks Persian and Farsi. Both of these terms refer to the same language. Based on the billionaire’s name, he is Azeri and probably speaks Azeri alongside Persian/Farsi.

A good video, but despite your speaking fast, I could still hear one interesting mistake somewhere at 8:05 you've considered Persian and Farsi to be two different languages. (Farsi is just Persian in Farsi, the root was phers- or something like this and next turned into fars-, with English borrowing the older wersion)

I think the first language to learn for success in life is your native one. Learn it grammatically well, and then learn others grammatically well. it shows intelligence.

What benefits do you see in that besides a way to inflate your status in the society?

Olly our English pronunciation and spelling are gnarly but our grammar is easier than any European language I know of. The hard part of French Spanish or even farsi after you get past the alphabet is the verbs conjugations and tenses. I've always thought our grammar easy streamlined. Maybe Haitian creole which is super streamlined French is easier. But whose grammar is easier than ours

The actual language courses are based on specific stories - you will be taken through a mystery story, chapter by chapter, while learning the language. All of the lessons are based on the story! :) There are also separate short story books you can buy for reading at your level (8 stories per book), as well as "101 Conversations", which is a mystery story in the form of dialogue between the characters.

As a polyglot I myself have proved that the languages I have mastered have given me so many opportunities in life. Foreign spouse, study abroad, living abroad, have many different native friends whom have helped me a lot in my life. Without all these opportunities, think I am just a stupid poor uneducated woman from a poor village and country.

they will be able to do in brain language exchange eventually. all the languages get put into a database, that then gets processed on some sort of wearable or surgically implanted tech, then when you think of a phrase that you would like to say in another language, you hear it in your head and can say it out loud, and when people say something to you in a foreign language, you brain processes the information in the language you have set as your base language.

Looking at the demographics, I'd say Hausa and Yoruba are a good shout for important future languages, possibly even Amharic, Kituba and Lingala (in addition to the obvious Mandarin, Indonesian, etc). Nigeria is already on the radar as up and coming but Ethiopia has real potential too. Obviously the DRC has suffered a lot in the colonial and post-colonial eras; but with its demographics and its natural resources, it's economic potential could be insane. If I were a billionaire and were lucky enough to have kids, I'd be encouraging them to learn Mandarin, Yoruba, Hausa and Spanish FWIW.

To me, it looks like billionaire status has little to do with foreign language learning. For instance, it's quite common for people in Africa to speak at least 3 languages, particularly if they've received a formal education. The educated Africans that I've met (most of whom are from the DRC, but also Eritrea and South Africa) speak their native tribal language (like Kinyarwanda), a regional language (like Swahili), and at least one colonial language (like French). Many times they'll also speak a fourth or fifth language, often English or another colonial or regional language or a nearby tribal language. Those from continental Europe who work in multinational corporations speak several European languages--again, common for educated Europeans with good employment (particularly those that come from countries with more than one official language). English speakers of any stripe or SES are much less likely to speak another language that people from Europe, Africa, Asia, or India in my experience. It's unfair, but English is a prestige language. International business, tourism, diplomacy, and education are often conducted in English regardless of the specific country they're happening in. If you want to attend a university in Mexico, you have to know English well enough to learn in it at the college level. If you want to sell goods to tourists, you have to learn English. It's your livelihood. Besides, the US is big enough that many Americans never leave the country. Even many who do, if they stick to cruising or visiting touristy areas, will never have to learn another language. I understand that Mandarin has a similar status in Asia, though Asian business owners (including the billionaires) have made much more of a point to learn English than most of their American counterparts. The exception would be the children of American billionaires, though in Zuckerberg's case, I think it has more to do with the fact that his in-laws are Chinese. My conclusion is that knowledge and use of foreign languages has more to do with their nationality and social situation than with their billionaire status (or how they got that status). It's sad, it's limiting, but that's the reality. And American billionaires reflect that reality more than anyone else.

So basically dyslexic people are screwed. Dyslexic people can't learn a single language (if you include reading and writing). Even native English dyslexic people can't learn English.

Elon Musk speaks and understands german quite well and if he understands german and afrikaans he can understand dutch as well.

I don’t think we should learn languages because they are useful, learn a language that you love to learn, one that you like speaking. If you like what you’re doing you will be happy to continue and you will thrive. If nothing can save us from death, languages and discovering the world around us might be what saves us from life.

I've heard that Zuckerberg's Chinese is abysmal. He allegedly has no concept of tones and people struggle to understand him. As for myself, I studied three foreign languages in school. When looking for a job, English was always taken for granted during the interviews (the fools). What landed me the three most important jobs in my life was German. I'm sure it was more of a coincidence than anything else but being fluent in German made the difference.

As I understand it, by the mid 2050s French will be the most spoken language on Earth. This will be mainly be because the language is so widely spoken in West / Central Africa.

Only if it's the lingua franca again, and that depends on if these African countries can seriously gain clout. or if France can overtake Germany in regards to the EU. Otherwise, either English stays dominant, or Mandarin takes over, or less likely, Russian returns in clout as the USA, China, and Russia are by far the three big players that bully everyone else.

I speak English and Bengali with native level fluency followed by Urdu and Arabic at semi fluency level. I still remember much of my Spanish from my younger days and could probably pick it up after about a month of living in Spain. It’s definitely a useful skill to have as you’re exposed to all sorts of new people, opportunities and ways of thinking that being a monolingual English speaker simply can’t afford.

Bill Gates can afford to take a couple of years off to learn a language or two.

It reminds me of a professor in the university waiting to retire to learn to play piano, I don't understand that kind of mindset to wait till all the circumstances are perfect and then the time and the life goes by.

Darling, the billionaire people usually come from ultra rich families. By the age of four five you end up having been exposed to at least 4-5 languages. That’s the result of being born into rich not the vice versa.

What an unexpected comment. Most, if not all as I didn't check each one in detail, of the billionaires in this video come from families that were wealthy at best, but none of them were billionaires, not even millionaires.

If you grow up in any major cosmopolitan city in the world, ( and nowadays many provincial cities as well ) you will have been exposed to a least 4 - 5 languages. Hell if you have Netflix, you are going to be exposed to several languages if you aren't locked into only watching Hollywood schlock. People need to stop using lack of wealth as an excuse for not reaching their maximum potential.

8:02 persian is the name of the language farsi in english. Those two are not two different languages

French school kids, especially those on an academic track, are required to learn 3/4 languages.

Farsi is just the Persian word for Persian I believe.
