A 58 year old, white female, who raised three children, without a drop of child support from their father. My children grew up in poverty. There was times I didn't eat so they could, I went without new clothes for over 10 years, so I could provide them with clothing. I want to thank this man for saying hey what about the poor white children. Because folks, there's a lot of us. By the way my children's dad, is a white male, who at the time was making 60,000 a year. No American child should ever have to live in poverty in the United States of America

Poor people have NO one lobbying for them. Because those who are slightly well off than their poor neighbors don’t want any services given to them. They call it socialism while the rich get socialism in forms of tax breaks and other discounts and are called job creators. When they are poverty creators when Walmart workers are on welfare.

America is more than happy to spend an average of about $40,000 a year to keep one person in prison, and has the highest incarceration rate in THE WORLD per capita, but gets big mad when asked to spend one shiny penny extra to go to schools, or other social programs that can help break the cycle of poverty. Instead of 'a rising tide lifts all boats', America says 'let's subsidize yachts!' ...and blames people who drown for not having 'innate knowledge' of how to build a boat, or even if they do have the knowledge, blame them for not having the tools to be able to do so. 👏👏👏 to Barber!!! He is the kind of 'talking head' we need more of. Straight up common sense without all the B.S.

Since Reagan, the Middle Class has disappeared, more and more falling into poverty. His "welfare queen" cliche was straight out of the Kochs' (billionaires) playbook. Then Bill Clinton, with his "new kind of Democrat," meaning Republican moved the Dems far to the right with his Omnibus Crime bill, written by Joe Biden, which was a racist, rightist act which made America have the highest number of incarcerated persons. Both corrupt parties work FOR the billionaires and corporations, not for We, The People.

The middle class is mostly a myth. What class you are part of is a function of how you make the money to pay your bills not how much you make. If you work for a living you are Working Class and far closer to being homeless than you are to being Wealthy.

  • @lizliz4186

Not anymore. Both Trump and Biden are appealing to and saying working class. The challenge is that the working class typically doesn't vote (or donate millions) so there's no reason to help them. At the end of the day they help those who actually vote. Everyone needs to vote. Staying home doesn't make a point, it only gives your view away for free.

And that would virtually guarantee that no one who is not already rich could afford to hold national office. It costs far too much to live a middle class existence in Washington DC for anyone who is not already wealthy to accept an electoral position there that does not pay sufficient to live there. Do you really want to guarantees that the only people who could ever afford to be elected to government are those who are already rich? The cost of living in Washington DC is estimated at 50% higher than the national average. The cost of housing is 140% higher. That means you will be covering the entire cost of living in one of the five most expensive cities in the United States out of your existing wealth; your congressional income would not even cover childcare for one kid. Literally everything else is coming out of your savings and investments. The people who can do that may not have the interest of the common man at heart.

@@DawnDavidson the point is, they don't *need* that salary *at all.* Why would paying them nothing make a difference? The people who are in the Senate would be there if it paid literally nothing. They don't *need* the money, they need the ability to shape *policy* to *benefit* those who already have wealth, such as themselves It is worth their while to do the job for *free,* as it will pay off for them in the long run, as it will not for most people of the nation. Their "salary" is irrelevant. Raising the minimum wage might *cost* them money personally. They may well already own businesses that profit from paying employees the least amount of money they can. Raising the minimum wage would provide those senators a pittance at best, while potentially costing them hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional wages paid to their employees. Why would they raise that minimum wage?

I understand, and.... they must! As Dr Barber says, politicians don't talk to them so that's partly why they don't vote. If poor and low-wage workers could feel like they are part of a movement, and would have power working together, then many, many more would vote. And, as he points out, the number of votes to change the outcomes in many of the races, just isn't that big.

And 15 states (mostly red) don’t allow mail in voting without specifically requesting it and providing an “excuse.” And in those states that do, that mail in ballot was lost in a pile of collection notices and other official looking letters that are asking them for money that they just don’t have. Letters to be dealt with another day, maybe after they get their second job to help make ends meet.

Been saying this for years. Poor does not equal POC. Poor hits all groups. We can do better and we allow our government representatives to protect greed instead.

@@ChristyMorris-rh7rqI’m in PA, and currently qualify for disability due to a car accident in ‘05 when I was 17 resulting in over 30 surgeries since. But, I also have a wife and daughter, I can’t afford to go on disability. I’m almost more machine than human at this point, but disability is just not sustainable. So, I’m trying to get a job and hoping my health can hold out.

Thank you simply thank you. My brother and I have talked about this for decades now about how this is a class thing not a race thing. And how we lost black leaders in the 60's because they were connecting those dots. My prayers are with you and for your protection Reverend. And thank you John for having him on. A democracy is only successful if it is built from the ground up. Pay attention to your Parrish/county/township politics. We have been sold a bill of goods that our vote does not matter and we have believed it for too long.

So deeply appreciative of guest and host, for Rev. Barber defining and articulating a major sickness in our nation... and lighting a way forwards, and Jon providing a forum, and always bringing a passion, brilliance, and wit. I'm 78, master's degree from UC Berkeley, well educated, high functioning, but since the pandemic, living below the poverty line, without health insurance, hustling gigs, unable to 'retire' perhaps ever. Will pray for a more united front among low income and poor folks, who value a more perfect democracy....

Fantastic interview Jon. Dr Barber is a force to be reckoned with and a beacon of light for years. Voters have the power. Congress refusing to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 for over 10 years is deplorable

Business owners view workers compensation and unemployment insurance as an employee perk, rather than a business expense. They fail to understand those expanses rarely benefit the average employee. The financial understanding disconnect is amazing.
