    I've seen 2 of your restoration projects, and I am blown away. The tolerances on those things have got to be perfect for the sound to be correct, and you took them all the way down, cleaned, tweaked, polished, lubricated, and then reassembled the little jewels. I'm in awe........and I'm a first class tool and die machinest. Wow! Master class work boss. Hat's off. = )

    Well my friend, thank you for the kind comment but it is actually you that should be celebrated. As a master machinist, you can craft the metal parts using a lathe and other machinist tools. I can craft simple parts and springs but not the more complex parts. Most of the parts on Reuge music boxes are crafted by hand - just like they were in the 1800s. Yes, some parts are made using CNC machines. What really blows me away is on the early 1800s music boxes, the crafters not only made everything by hand (no power either) but they also had to make the tools and machines used to fabricate the parts. I am self-taught and I do not hold myself out to be a master machinest, toolmaker or model maker. Kind regards, Troy Duncan, CPA, retired.

    Correct. The first music boxes were sur plateau (super tiny discs) found mostly in watches and FOBS. Then, cylinder music boxes were invented and were the "only game on town" until the 1880s when Symphonion invented the disc music box. This allowed new discs to be created when new songs were composed. Then came the Gramaphone with a human voice and then LP records. As such, the music box industry basically went away.

Sadly the ratchet went bad, and I could not pull the chain, because if I did, the ratchet would slip and the weight would hit the floor in an instant. But don't worry! I will get it back! Once I do I will video the Reuge inside the clock.

    How exactly does one fit 4 songs on a cylinder, even after it's gone a full revolution?

  • @JasonMasters

    @JasonMasters

    6 жыл бұрын

    Horizontal offset. Shift the cylinder slightly left-right and the picks which were plucking the notes now miss them, but a different set of picks pluck the notes instead. (Apologies to those who know the correct terms. I hope I was clear enough anyway)

  • @StarkeStudio

    When the arranger make the song, there are the same numbers of column that number of songs For the example let's take this, there are 4 musics So colonnes are like: 123412341234123412341234 When the cylinder is at a certain position it only takes the"1" toothes 1---1---1---1---1---1---1---1---1--- And if it is set to the third music --3---3---3---3---3---3---3---3---3---3- And you got it

  • @CBF1

    @CBF1

    It shifts to another position. There are gaps between each teeth which prevent the incorrect cylinder pins from plucking the teeth in order to play the correct song.

    I wonder if there are any designs that also vary the length of the pins protruding from the cylinder, to vary the loudness of the note. I feel this would also alter the strike timing of the note, and would require some compensation (quieter notes would need to be pushed correspondingly later, relative to other notes).

  • @ltva8781

    So fascinating. I just looked at Amazon, this musical treasure must cost a fortune especially this 144 note, the 72 note alone cost USD 16k! you must have a good retirement to own this. Listening on your retirement relaxing moments

    A fair price for a new Reuge 3/72 is around USD $3,000 - slightly more if the case is really fancy; some of the examples on Amazon are crazy priced. A Reuge 144 is significantly more. That being said, I do have a very good retirement and I also acquire and restore mechanical music pieces so others may enjoy them. I sell most Reuge 3/72 music boxes for between $750 and $1,350 - depending upon the case style and song selection: Kind regards, Troy Duncan, CPA, retired www.singingbirdbox.com

    Have you never heard the saying “ you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear .” There are individuals that are a living testament to that fact ..

    It is a beautiful piece of work, but then the swiss are known for their craftsmanship. As a cabinet maker I have to say the fact they did not make the slots in the screws that hold the comb line up is a glaring distraction for such an expensive piece.

    I appreciate your comment and I have never seen a music box where the comb screws are aligned to be perfect and this reflects seeing music boxes dating from right around 1800 to the present. It just something that has never been performed.

    They're kids. Let them be kids. They'll learn. Had it not been for FNaF, I wouldn't have learned about my love for music boxes. I have around 5 of them now, but one is missing a spur gear :| They only know Toreador March as "Freddy's song" just like they only know Grandfather's Clock as "The Marionette's music box". I only found out about them because I didn't know the name of "Freddy's song" and I kept getting actual music boxes. We've gotta start somewhere.

    Moshi moshi Spiderman desu Eh. Not every music box. Scott never put names for the songs he used, so when we hear something similar to it, kinda yell it out, you know? By now, we all know the names of the music boxes used. For this one, Toreador March (or "Freddy's Music Box" as those who don't know the actual name know it as). You'll probably see more fans on Swan Lake, Grandfather Clock, and Schubert's Serenade (which I've been looking for since the damn game came out. See? Learn new stuff from those games if you look)
