I can get them to come back but I usually gotta run a little bit to catch it and definitely mess up 50% of the time

I've seen boomerangs come back, and even them do that nice little arch while they're flying, but I've never seen them do a full 360 on the way back like that...that was impressive

Now almost in 2022 and i look back at the videos from Vic. I remember 8 years ago i made my first boomerang from paint sticks. The next day i went to the hills nearby my house and test the flight. I took me 30 minutes to figure it out but i got the hang of it and i catch it multlple times. I like to thank you Vic for the good memories.

So as an former avid surfer, boomerange maker and shape creater with a wall of booms hanging in my studio I must admit that living on the coast of California I found that prevailing west wind made throwing effortless...I retired to Northern Kentucky a few years ago and the wind is as fickle here as my 14 year old granddaughters attitude! Makes throwing and catching very difficult. Very!

That is exactly what happened to me over 19 years ago. I bought my first real returning boomerang, threw it and caught it. Then made a career out of it. Maybe the same will happen with your grandchildren.

I used to build boomerangs back when I was in college. The first time one came back that I had made, it was a HUGE thrill. I got pretty good at making them, and gave several away to friends. But after I graduated, my life took a very different direction, and I stopped making them. Now, I'm in my 50's with grandchildren, and I think I might need to revive this hobby. It would be a great legacy to pass along. Thanks for the inspiration, and reminding me of a hobby I once had and got great joy from...

I have 2 type of boomerangs , 1 is regular curve pine press wood and 2 is made by Wham- mo toy company red and yellow frisbee with three blades it the best softy non- wood I used and does just perfect circle back and does throw like a frisbee another ways , I can bend it blades to shift any direction I can throw like a boomerang .

When I worked at a company in south Somerset, we had a huge outdoor area including a soccer pitch at the plant. One lunchtime someone turned up with boomerang, this started a huge craze of engineers making their own. A guy had the design for a simplistic one that was passed around, I went out and bought a sheet of marine ply and made my first boomerang. If flown in a higher trajectory it would end up doing figure of eights at the end of it's flight, it was fantastic. My neighbour's 10 year old son eventually got the hang of throwing it and was besotted by it, I gave it to him because I had a sheet big enough to make about 9 more. Cut out the next blank, copied my first one, it looked identical but as a flying machine it was just not airworthy. Tried 2 more times, just couldn't make a similar flying machine, they all looked the same just never flew the same. Found out a couple of weeks later that the neighbour's son had swapped it for something else, I was gutted.

Thats awesome. It sounds like the ones you made that were duplicates that did not fly the same because they were simply tuned different. Any slight bend or warp in the wood will cause erratic flight. I do my best to use the natural bends and warps in my ply wood before I even cut out the boomerang. My hats off to you for all your efforts, good job!

@@VictorPoulin I was told that the two arms of the boomerang were like the wings of an aircraft and should have the same profile or cross section of an aircraft wing. This was the aim on all 4 models. I realised afterwards that how sensitive the boomerang was to slight differences in profile. I had chosen marine ply as the construction material as the consensus at work was that it was very stable and uniform in its manufacture. Every now and then someone would throw it the wrong way round and my memory says it never returned, almost went straight. We realised a special one was needed for a lefty to throw them easily. The ones we built at work had a very high spin rate and trying to catch them at the end of the flight was a no-no due to the energy in the spin. My first one as I said would end up coming down like a sycamore winged seed, almost vertically but slowly and could be caught if you were in the right place to allow it to land in your flat hands. The whole boomerang at work thing lasted a few months in the summer at work. One of the simplest boomerangs available was one made from two of the old style wooden 12 inch rollers held together by elastic bands. Different flight profiles could be introduced by fixing any number of coins at the middle with the elastic bands. The whole thing about return boomerangs is an interesting subject, seemingly especially to blokes.

Yes the wind can cause them to fly erratic if it is too strong. Just a small breeze or no breeze at all.

Haven't seen a good old Boomerang video in about 40 years, now I need to find a good old yo-yo video.

adfggffffffddffd different kinds of boomerangs, the famous returning one is actually used to scare birds and keep them low by flying overhead. Aboriginals had some pretty ingenious spear throwers, and their hunting boomerangs were more like a throwing club. Source: I'm an Auzzie, we ride kangaroos to school and throw boomerangs as a school sport :-P

It takes some skill to throw and catch a boomerang. As a kid, I tried throwing one and while I was able to land it nearby, I was never able to catch it. Honestly, I was a little afraid of trying to catch it. This thing is spinning and the edges are a bit sharp. Extremely cool to see someone make this look so easy.
