The returning boomerang was discovered in a few different countries but the non returning hunting boomerang or better known as the Kylie was first discovered in Australia and some still use it today.

Now that I've discovered this awesome channel, my feelings of awe, and curiosity have definitely resurfaced. It certainly takes a good hard throw.

My friends and I used to play with one of these triple arm boomerangs when I was a young lad (Scotland UK) which we made ourselves based on pictures out of a book and they flew great. We also used to stick bits of card and thin wood onto them to try to get different flight patterns and got some interesting results. That was around early 70s so it’s great to see someone else trying some of these ideas out. Must have a go again sometime. Thanks for awakening an old passion for all things flying. 👍😀

I too made one when I was like 10 out of a piece of sheetrock lol. Would have been in 1980. I threw it once and it hit the ground and broke lol. Anything your interested in trying again? I sell them and haver a sale going on as well at boomerangsbyvic

The flight path is so elongated and spins slowly, makes a really cool illusion of "that shouldn't be flying while spinning that slowly!" Great job!

The only other thing is it requires a really hard throw. Harder than I would expect someone experienced to be able to throw it. I might ad it to my functional art category.

First time I watched this guy's videos was about 2008 I think. Fun times, I made my own boomerang. First one doesn't come back, the next ones did but they had way too much range to be thrown in my neighborhood. So I made a three-winged one. Don't mind me just reminiscing.

I'm a left hander and started throwing by lobbing a right handed boomerang with my left hand and then discovered the Left-Hand shop in London where I bought my favourite, left-hand 3 footer. I've got about 12 different ones and recently learned that the Australian Aboriginals had 2 types, one that came back, used to scare the prey into going in a particular direction and the other type, the killing one would be thrown but didn't come back as it was too thick and had no champhered area's like the returning ones do.

Sweet, I too make and sell left handed boomerangs at my website boomerangsbyvic. Have you posted any videos of you throwing yours? Love to see them. So the non returning hunting boomerang you wrote about is better known as the Kylie. I have been asked by many to build them but just have not had time to venture into them. Also the MTA would be a fun one to build and throw.

Idk why today was the day that youtube-bot was like, "this guy needs to see some boomerang vids" but I appreciate it and didn't know what I was missing out on until now.

Actually I threw a boomerang as sticks don't come back unless you have a retriever :)

Had one as a kid, similar to your plain blade design you showed at the beginning, with the exception of a short stick in the middle to catch it with. Bought it about45 years ago in Southern Illinois when we were at a family reunion

If you drill a hole in the middle and place a 4 inch dowel, it will still fly well and you can easily catch it via the handle.

I was going to buy one ! But they quit making one , so I bought original australia curve boomerang instead at a wood shop store and gift shops.

How was the flight? I have had a lot of people write to me that bought from gift shops only to find out the boomerang was just for decor and not made to return.

Same, mine were made by Whamm-o. Traditional shape.

Took me back a while to when I got a boomerang. I spent so much time with it at H. L. Bradt School sports grounds. I ended up preferring boomerangs to model rockets as the chances of getting the boomerang back were higher. Thanks for the post.

Hi. I am a bush pilot in Alaska. Many aircraft have gone to using winglets at the end of each wing to gain lift from the wasted energy dumping from their wing tip vertices. I wonder if adding winglets to the end of each blade would make it fly better, or if it would cause too much drag? It sure would be hell to try and catch, that's for sure! I don't know how much aircraft wing design tech translates to a boomerang. However, I doubt anyone has ever spent the money to wind-tunnel test a boomerang to find out!

There is a boomerang called MTA. Maximum time aloft. It is thrown straight up into the air and spins back down to the ground. Sometimes can take a full 3-7 minutes before it reaches the ground. This was tested in a wind tunnel but flies nothing like a regular boomerang. With that said I do understand what you mean about generating lift but can also say that it would create somewhat of a drag as you mentioned. A plane has engine force to keep a flight but the boomerang only has the energy from the thrower till it runs out of spin. When I want a boomerang to fly higher i simply bend the wings up for a bit just before I throw it. I would like to try your idea sometime just to see.

Loved boomerangs as a kid. Pleasantly surprised you could make them into such awesome shapes as an adult. Now I have to try to make one representative of a ufo.
