For someone that's killing countless enemies and seeing her dead body everywhere, she sure is surprised at everything that happens.

As a Greek myth nut, the naming for most of these characters and places are kind of amazing. I'm going to mention all the references I hear and make a handy guide for the uninitiated: Selene (main character)- Original Goddess of the moon Helios (ship)- original God of the sun Atropos (planet)- One of the three fates Apollo (era)- God of the Sun, Music, prophecy and many other things Phrike (hostile)- a spirit of horror and terror Brief reference to Hydras and Gorgons in an audio log- snake based monsters (medusa the main example of a Gorgon) Mention of Olympus- home of the Gods Astra (link to Astraea)- Goddess of purity, virginity and innocence, or possibly linked to Asteria, the goddess of stars Ixion (hostile)- a mortal obsessed with fire. Punished by Zeus for attempting to woo his wife by being strapped to a flaming chariot wheel and thrown across the sky, immortal and in constant agony. Nemesis- Goddess of retribution Acheron (Tali Acheron in Selene's diary)- Acheron was a river of the Underworld, linked to Misery and woe Theia- Goddess/titan of pure sight, who gave silver and gold their brightness (mother of Selene and Helios) Hyperion (hostile)- Titan associated with light Mention of Ichor- The blood of the Gods, bright gold Ophion (hostile)- elder Titan, ruled the world with his wife Eurynome, before they were overthrown by Kronos and Rhea

EDIT: There is an extra true ending if you find all the sun pieces after you beat the game. Didn't realize this until after the game movie was posted. The gameplay, the ambiance, the atmosphere... It was damn near perfect. It was punishing, in all the best ways possible. It felt so satisfying having the perfect run to get through to the next boss. It Takes Two is still the GOTY in my opinion, but this game comes in a close second. As for the game movie, there are some traditional cinematic "cutscenes" here and there, but most of the story is told through the house scenes and through audio logs. Since the environment is constantly changing anyway, there is not set path to follow, and thus it can make the game movie feel a bit disjointed at times. But that's how the game is supposed to feel, so I feel like it works for game movie purposes. Also, this is a Roguelike game, so deaths are a big part of the whole experience. We left a bunch of the deaths in since it's stitched into the narrative.

Dude, thank you so much for including the context for the cutscenes in gameplay sections. This is exactly what I was looking for after watching the devs react to the speedrun. I don't have a PS5 or the patience for a game like this, but the story and world looked incredible.

The visuals have a Ridely Scott vibe(Prometheus, Alien, Bladerunner), I like it

@@rochedonovan-campbell7609 Yeah there is some of that, I also mean Ridley's cinematic style, like how he frames shots, sets up the atmosphere and paces the story. Like...his films have an atmosphere that's thick with nihilistic existential dread. Geiger is characterised more by a lot of low-key unsettling sexual and insect-like imagery.

This game is the song Don't fear the reaper by the blue oyster cult. She even says don't fear seasons and you hear it towards the end of the game. And in the song, they say she had become like they are, because of all the alien tech that Selene kept adding to her.

my take is she died in the car crash and the thought of her mother"s lack of compassion towards her died with her, in the cycle of purgatory that she in vision (being an astronaut like her mother, her imaginary friend the apollo era astronaut, the whole alien world) she is constantly trying to seek approval from her absent mother. very haunting lol

Thanks for sharing this story, I've been able to get to the third biome but can't beat the boss there. Probably never will, I don't have the skills or reflexes but I appreciate being able to see how the story plays out.

@@greob yes helios is a boy in the scenes of the house, his name is written on the door of his room and his mother speaks to him in the masculine on the telephone voicemail and when he plays with the walki talki he says I am the captain and he rather boyish hands

@@zouga36 Helios is the name of the ships, the actual ship Selene crashed the planet with aswell as the child's room who used it as their own "play and pretend" space ship

This story can be interpreted in so many ways and that fascinates me. I personally saw Helios as being victim of abuse from their mother. You see 3 things in the house sequence that make me believe this. 1. She pours cereal and there is barely any food for her to eat suggesting the mother isn't really taking care of her. 2. When Helios tries to tell the astronaut that make believe story, she looks up and finds the astronaut not present, maybe suggesting the mother was also verbally abusive to Helios. After the astronaut disappears, Helios sais something like "it is a cool story" as if the astronaut was ignoring her or saying something along the lines of "that's a dumb story, Helios". 3. When Helios tries to show the astronaut the toy octopus, the astronaut attacks Helios. I dont know if I'm on the right path, but I see the astronaut as selene. I think Helios thinks it's so cool that their mother is pursuing a career with Astra, that Helios takes an interest in space. (Just the fact that her mother is very motivated to get a job with Astra and actively studying and trying to get a job with them). Either way, in Helios room, you see drawings, books, toys, etc. Helios looks up to the mother, and even pretends to see her as a child's portrayal of an astronaut even in normal everyday life. Helios just wants her love but the mother is very flawed and abusive, maybe partly because she is so focused on her career and maybe because Selenes own mother also treated her like that. So eventually after Selene gets the letter from Astra, she is distracted, devastated, maybe even lost some sleep over the rejection. Sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations, which is what I think possibly caused Selene to see the astronaut in the road. The result of the crash sends Selene into mental insanity/schizophrenia/etc. Selene immediately goes into this state soon after the crash, but escapes her mental problems after biome 3 ends. I believe she lives a sane life for many years until one day she is playing the piano when she is older, and starts playing the song that loosely resembles don't fear the reaper, the song playing during the crash. I think playing the song reminds her of what happened and sends her back into insanity. And that's why biomes 4-6 are the same environment, yet overgrown and different. All biomes are still fragments of Selenes mind, but biomes 1-3 was the insanity she experienced soon after the crash, biomes 4-6 was the insanity she experienced as an old woman. I think Selene has unbelievable guilt about what happened with Helios and sees herself as the pregnant monster in the final cutscene. She pushes the monster away and tries to separate her current self from the person she used to be. There is so much more to this, but that's how I understood the core of the story.

I find it _very_ hard to believe that the creators weren't inspired by that movie at all. Between the core gameplay conceit, and the design of the very first enemies you encounter, _Returnal_ has to be at least a teensy bit influenced by that movie. Which is absolutely fine -- that movie rocks.

still a bit confused about how it all went down the ending seeming inconclusive. if anyone feels like explaining I would appreciate it cause it was super cool and I loved it couldn't go to bed until I finished the video

Yeph, the ending is so weird. even the true ending one. Why game devs hiring people that keep making this kind of ending? They could hire me and makes the same crap. At least the money comes to me. Daym the story... Is it real? is it limbo? is it just a simulation? Is it an alien torture to the brain? Is it too much Xanax pills? are they planning to leave it hanging for Returnal 2 or something? God I hate this kind of ending. Anyway, if she managed to get to the signal and spent another 60 years, I count that as a win. Me myself, would have keep coming to the signal and keep spending 60 years again and again. Game dev, please explain everything you put inside your game stories, please. Great graphics tho.

Its unfinished story. half cooked food. half sketched painting. half eaten bowl of cereal. Whats a good "Cliff hanger" then? Something like Inception. The one that tells that "it doesnt matter which is which, he doesnt care anymore." it does finish the story by hanging some part of it, for the unimportant intepretation. In the end, the story still tells something. Lets switch the game story guy to work on Inception. He wont explain what tech that allows them do that. He wont explain the limbo. He wont explain the team, the mission, nothing. Just some people entering other people's dreams. Then the guy who work on the film working this one. He might gonna start from one punch line, which is this story try to tells, that "she have unresolved regret." Then he gonna finish the detailing on cloning mechanism, helios ship and helios the kid connection, the xenos tech origins, how the car and house get there. Basic stuff like start, middle, end. and just leave one of other small thing to be left hanging. Ugh, I didn't even ask for Pixar level quality of story. Not really want to compare to them, coz it is daym far. Just finish the story, man. But this? so many stuff I have to "Interpret" myself I guess. I mean, is she gonnabe a cthulu creature? dimension behind TV, that wheelchair alien stuff, Earth people that wont try to uncover that planet capabilities, the fvck that house and car doing there, she must be special the whole rogue planet clone her up and build exact dummies of her house and car. "Too much Xanax" seems like a logic explanation. They dont start story to make it finished. It keep feels, unfinished...

So she not really in space, in a way this is her own personal hell a sort of limbo that forces her to relive her death, by alien creatures every single time. Her thirst for wanting to explore the stars be a space adventure, made her neglect her own daughter, destroyed her family and everyone who loved and cared for her the accident was the final straw. If you listen to the TV has it keeps flicking back and forth to the different news. "The drivers suffer a massive damage to the spinal cord. " What I could guess from this is that she is in a between life and death.

Amazing graphics and scenery. Love the alien designs and tech but a little confusing with the story line.

I put 15 hours in to get to the level 2 boss it’s a brutal grind of endless deaths… (about 40 cycles already)I just had to think I would rather put my time into something else… It’s far better to watch the All cutscenes movie, this AMAZING speedrun and the Ending explained video… Gonna put this on ebay and invest in Ghost of Tsushima Directors cut and enjoy my time instead lol.. It is a great game I just don’t have the patience to go round and round building up the buffs for a good run to see a tiny bit more each run or just run past everything.

The gameplay looks similar to Control with similar type visuals and gun combat.

Holy hell, I am glad I gave up after the first boss and came here instead of spending 200+ hours trying to reach that "end". I would have wanted a refund if I had bought the full game for it to end like that with just the full scene of what we already learned halfway through and no end to the cycle. Good thing I got it from PS+ instead. Time to free-up some storage space!

So a thing I found out is this is only one ending. Therea actually a true ending by getting shard from each biome and turning them into a car key to go back to after killing the final boss again
