Return to Silvertown and the Silvertown Tramway
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Silvertown was a station on the North Woolwich Branch of the former North London Line. By 1990 the North London Line had been reduced to a single track. The Up line been retained as a freight only link to what was known locally as the Silvertown Tramway. The tramway followed the route of the original North Woolwich line. In its heyday a maze of lines radiated off this route which formed a freight artery through the Port of London's Royal Victoria Dock and Thames Wharf area. It linked back onto the North Woolwich branch just south of Canning Town station at Thames Wharf Junction.
The last freight workings to use the tramway was a flow of scrap metal from Ward Ferrous Metals Ltd, a scrapyard just to the west of Silvertown station. This scapped closed in 1991 so bring to an end the freight movements in the Silvertown area.
The section of the North London Line between Stratford and North Woolwich was closed in 2006 along with all the stations along the route. The section of trackbed to Canning Town was later incorporated into the Dockland Light Railway (DLR) network.
Crossrail have now reclaimed the section of disused trackbed of the former North London Line which ran from Custom House to Silvertown and this been incorporated into the branch of the new Elizabeth Line to Abbey Wood.

I worked at Tate and Lyle for 19 years from 1997 to 2016. I saw all these changes slowly unfold. Great to see this video. Brings back happy memories from these times. Thank you.

My old man used to work at a factory called BOCM which after it closed became Charringtons, He loved that place and the Christmas parties which I went to as a Kid was fantastic
I lived at 49 albert roadfromwhen i was born in 1953, it was opposite tate and lyles, i also worked in bocm silcocks, but that was in west silvertown, the place has changed out of all recognition, to an old silvertowner, i cant help but feel sad, pete
What a great video with some interesting photos. I first came across the Silvertown tramway in about 1984. A lot of traces still remained then.

Many thanks, I wished I had visit the area earlier when the tramway was still active.
I used to drive over that level crossing every weekday from 1986 to 2006 on the way to work at the paint factory in North Woolwich Road from home in Maidstone via the Woolwich Ferry
I love these old industrial archeology videos. Reminds us of what we used to have and have lodst
Well, well, I never knew any of this existed and I only lived just across the river, just inside plumstead on bloomfield road. That was back in the 60's until 1971 and our house, and my granny's house around the corner, and all their long gardens, are all gone now.
Excellent video. Thank you very much.

Great video my late wife was born in Starnard Crescent in Pfefab as a child in what is callrd Cyprus.. i remember driving thru docklands to work and taking her to visit Docklands and her going quiet when she saw new builds and dereliction and wiping out of area full of memories long held..
Very informative and interesting video. Amazing how it changes over the years and sad in some aspects. At least a railway line is still present in the form of the Elizabeth line.
Excellent video .
I used to live in the blocks of flats, Gannon Point to be exact, seen over the Connaught tunnel at 2:48, this take me to happier times. Thanks for the memories!

You are very welcome.
Thanks, that filled in a lot I was missing, and very clearly. I think the line was already closed when I first visited.
Amazed that you failed to mention Tate & Lyle Refinery as it appears in most of the shots. Worked there myself from 79 to 99

Fair point, although I was trying to concentrate primarily on the railways of the area. I know a few people who also worked there and they tell me it was a good place to work.
Thanks Jago 😀
Remember going down there on a red rover bus pass, 3 bob 15p from Walthamstow bus garage. Late 60's there were 3 shunters out on the street opposite Tate and Lyle. All with mixed wagons and all shut down. The smell of the place, you could cut it with a knife. Sugar tobacco, glue (boiled bones) ands the brewing from that brewery over the other side.

Must have been an amazing place to visit back then. I grew up in Romford which had a large brewery in the middle of the town for many years which made the whole place smell of yeast.
Was it really necessary to build such a high wall, looks like something you would have seen in Berlin! Good to see rail corridor is being reused though.

It’s downstream of the Thames Barrier, so the walls are needed for flood protection!

Indeed they did as well as EPB's borrowed from the southern. I now regret not photographing the 313's when they were working the line.
Silvertown kind of has a Berlin feel to it

Berlin of the 1960s. Berlin is a very different city now…
I was carrying out a ground investigation adjacent to Lyles factory this was related to the DLR . During the investigation we came across the old tramway We dug up one of the old rail track seats which I still have in my garage. This is part of our history or a piece of junk?

Will the crossrail trains terminate at abbey wood? I've been looking on google maps and I see the station there has been extensively rebuilt and extended, and it looks like the overhead line will end there, so it must be a terminus for the crossrail trains unless they can run off the third rail as well, just like the eurostars. And I see they've raised the road there now onto a bridge, much better than the old level crossing that was there when I lived in plumstead as it held up the traffic for ages while a train waited in the station.

Abbey Wood will be the terminus for the Crossrail trains. They are AC only and unable to run on the third rail.
what song is that
