My favourite movie as a kid. The original of course was a classic. But This one was more how I envisioned it from the books
Watched this wonderful movie for the first time this weekend and let me say wow! It was full of so much depth and symbolism. I felt more connected to it than I did with Wizard of Oz. I even cried at the end. Long time ago I was a little girl with a big imagination but overtime I learned how to be in reality but I never forgot my friends made from my "imagination" and the lessons they taught me.
'Return to Oz' is one of those films which, for some, was forgettable or off-putting, but for me and many others, it had and still has an unusual charm and magic all it's own.
Fairuza Balk was so adorable in this movie. This was a decade before she played Nancy Downs in 1996's "The Craft".
An underrated classic I enjoyed since 4 for 38 years! This was when entertainment was entertainment and no stupid lectures and agenda driven nonsense.
This movie scared me as a child (late 1980's)
Perhaps the most misleading trailer...ever? Loved this flick but it was absolutely TERRIFYING!
The only Disney movie to have an evil princess

Princess Mombi is so iconic. I have so many theories about her past, i like to think she got into a fight with the witch of the west, and she beheaded her. However Mombi had the life powder, and she got to cheat her death there, then around 20 years later when she got into power, she started taking others heads

I remember this movie and it's on Disney plus and it's a little scary but I love the ending.
The heads scared me when I was younger how it startled me
This movie's a freaking nightmare.
The interesting thing about Return to Oz is it took a couple of the sequel books, made various characters equivalents to Wizard of Oz characters, and added a pretty heavy twist. Toto - Belina Scarecrow - Jack Pumpkinhead Tin Man - Tik Tok Lion - Gump Witch - Momby Wizard - Gnome King Monkeys - Wheelers Glinda - Ozma

Toto, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Liion all appear in the film, too, though.
LOVED how much darker & more dangerous this was compared to the original!
I'm one of the minorities that prefers this over the 1939 Original film.

For me it reminds me of (The Never Ending Story) movie. That’s how I feel & see it. But I’ve never seen this movie before, so That’s it.

I say this makes a great theatrical trailer for the movie: Return to Oz, and I love Oz!

A classic :-) thank you for uploading this trailer, I would always watch it on the Disney Channel 😅
A stunning film.
People bitch about this film being too dark yet don't mind Gremlins 1 for being dark too beforehand

Yea and they don’t know the original books. I’m reading the Oz books and they are much more creepier and eerie. They aren’t like the Judy Garland movie lol all cheery and cozy.
I was alive as a kid and seeing lots of movies in 1984 and 1985. But I never even heard of this one until many years later. Feel like Disney buried it and never advertised it.
The one was better IMO. Would love to see a series of this and touch on different characters and different areas within the land of oz
I enjoy watching this more than the animation one, Journey Back To Oz

Really cool flick if I remember correctly.
I remember watching this movie back in 2014. The end credits made me cry.
I saw that when I was a kid.
A vastly underrated film. I love both this movie and the original 1939 film.
this is how oz was supposed to look!
This is the movie that gave Fariuza Balk that dark edge in her acting career.

You and an entire generation of kids that saw it when they were in single digits, myself included. The trailer (and all the marketing at the time) really downplayed how terrifying this movie is.
I remember wanting to see this when it came out because I was so in love with her face... but I never did see it. Years later I saw her in something else, without making the connection, and still found her adorable. I didn't find out until much later it was the same girl!

Boo. Had it been finished the way the creators wanted instead of getting chopped at the knees by stupid Disney execs mid production it would have turned out far more polished. The score by Shire is the crown jewel in what could have been a landmark film had it been seen thru as envisioned. Yes it was never going to be the phony happy clappy Judy Garland abomination, but that doesn't make it unworthy of more than a cursory viewing.
@ricardocantoral7672
2 жыл бұрын
It's barely worth a "cursory viewing" because there is nothing beyond the special effects. The 1939 film had a heart, you actually care about what happened to Dorothy and company. Fariuza Balk did a great job but I couldn't care less about the boring characters she was surrounded by.
@aaronying4989

Hey, I really liked this movie and have seen multiple times. But I’d agree the tone is different it is colder and more grim. It’s not emotional like the MGM movie.
@superdupermcgee
Жыл бұрын
@@ricardocantoral7672 Those boring characters are in numerous Oz books. The movie is a pretty faithful rendition of two of the novels. Some of the books are darker in tone. As a fan of the original movie, sure, this one is vastly different and may put off many viewers. But as a fan of the books (which I find to be much better than the Judy Garland film) this is a nice homage to a huge, complex universe that has barely been touched upon by the various Oz adaptations. I wish they would have made other movies that went further into the lore and introduced even more new characters. Instead we get a retread of the same basic stuff, over and over again. At least this movie tried.

Respectfully disagree I think it’s a great underrated movie and more true to the Oz books
This is borderline false advertising.
How is it that a movie made 40-50 years earlier was far better quality than this disaster. Explains why I never heard of it as a kid.

I'm puzzled why I never heard of it either. Came out 2 weeks after The Goonies. Although I recall walking into Goonies at the last minute and missing the trailers.
The trailer for this movie is pretty bad. So bad I found myself agreeing with the chicken: "Why don't we just go back to Kansas" indeed.
The movie was a box office disappointment because of it's terrorism and poor storytelling
