    We were all listening to the same old rock and roll in the early seventies. You know. AOR. You could hear the same song 6-7 times a day. Then we started fooling around with the radio dial, and low and behold, way down to the left, down in the like 83.7 or 85.9 we discovered college radio. It was like being jettisoned into a different galaxy. EXPLORATION!!!The music of Return to Forever and Herbie’s Head Hunters was like a breath of fresh air. It was so accessible. so new, so electric. It took you places Pink Floyd could never. Needless to say, some of us fell in love with this wonderful music called Jazz Fusion.🎸🎷🎹💕

    I miss the days of being able to buy some tickets for $25 the day before a show, and jump on the bus downtown, and see RTF or HH, who would then proceed to Blow our Minds. RIP to some of the members of those great bands no longer on this plane.

    Me and my roommate came home and this was on TV. Yep in 1974. Neither one of us had ever heard anything like this before. We both cracked up laughing in shock and awe. Funny in a year or two I would be composing and playing Jazz Fusion.

    I love to hear REAL musicians playing real music! I cut my musical “teeth” in this era as a bass player. I don’t want to hear computer loops that pass for “music” today! I remember me and a handful of musicians from my high school going to a concert at San Diego State in the late 70’s. It was Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock with two grand pianos facing each other and NOTHING MORE! It was an amazing show!

    Stanley Clarke was a genius already on their first two albums (the eponymous one and LAAF), 21 years old and almost his first albums, already a master. I've loved his tone, phrasing, playing and improvisation skills ever since I first heard him more than forty years ago - I was around twelve years old at the time.

    Yeah I watched this on tv in 74 at 14. I was however, already awear of Chicks deeper more serious work with Roy Haynes and Mirislov Vitus in 68 "Now He Sings Now he Sobs". I was also becoming more awear of the 2nd Miles Davis Acoustic Quintet with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock like from 63 to 66. But these Synths were the new thing so that was fun but..I guess for me I was awear that both had been involved in heavier jazz earlier.

    what pedals is Chick using ? I see a Mutron III envelope filter during the soundcheck (you can see him reaching over to where the Mutron is now hidden at 20.05). but what is the other box seated in sight on the left of the clavinet ? it is connected to the Rhodes... the Rhodes sounds like it might have a ring modulator, which would be a set up of the Rhodes we would expect from Chick. but which ring modulator is this ? see the sound check and 19.30..

    Drives me nuts that their edit cuts out everything except 1:30 of Herbie & Chick's intro duet. Andd just as bad, they put the narrator's speech over the jam and mixed his voice louder than the music. Terrible, purposeless/tasteless post-production choices.

  • @ExecutionSommaire

    @ExecutionSommaire

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah haha, it reminds me of a live from the Pat Metheny Group where they chose to cut between every song to insert a short interview of each musician. Ironically, at some point Pat says something like "we try to make the performance into one long song" ... And the post-prod carefully broke down the performance into individual, isolated pieces :D

    @KingPinniped I watched this when it was originally broadcast on WTTW in Chicago. The program 'Soundstage' aired weekly similar to Austin City Limits (which wasn't on the air yet). IIRC the narrator is just the guy that did all the voice work on WTTW which was the local PBS channel. The video cuts off after 42 minutes, a PBS production without commercials would have had more than 42 minutes of air time. I've got to wonder if there's a missing segment at the end that featured the Chick/Herbie duet.
