We had some distant cousins visit us on the west coast of finland some years ago. They seemed to have a similar experience to yours! Lovely that you made the trip. Very moving! Ty for making the video!

I'm in tears watching this video. Thank you for making it. My great-grandmother was from Ylitornio and immigrated to the US in 1914 at age 17, alone. She ended up settling in Brush Prairie, Washington State, which also has a Finn Hill neighborhood. Unfortunately I had virtually no contact with that side of my family, even though I grew up right over the river in Oregon. I've done some genealogy work over the years, and research into the homelands of my ancestors, and nowhere on earth calls to me more than Finland. My financial situation means I'll likely never see the land I feel is my true home, so I live vicariously through videos like yours. Thank you again.

The Finnish people have such an interesting background and I am glad to hear that you’ve done some work to connect to your homeland and I’m glad in some small way I was able to bring some connection for you. This video is honestly bringing tears to my eyes because of the appreciation of my country and its beautiful nature. And how well you are showing the 'real us'. I also do appreciate the choice of music you have put in the video. We have kind of a rough history as well because of the Winter War, yet we got to keep our independence. Kiitos Ken & Caroline!

@@kenwilliams12 I sometimes feel bad when sometimes I don't appreciate all the beautiful things around me. Traveling sure helps but videos like these just make me realize how unique place this is and I should value it even more. The winter and the lack of sun (vitamin D!) can really affect our moods and can be quite rough mentally at times, but we should not forget how peaceful and beautiful it is at the same time. EDIT: By the way, I like how your calming voice, how you edit the videos (I know it can be a loong process sometimes) and your camera control! Please keep up with your good work, I can't wait to see your next video! With best regards, a true Finn.

You guys are the most quiet and soft spoken Americans I've ever seen and I've been to 43 states. Finnish ancestry is a given lol. My uncle moved to the US at the age of 17, he participated in the Korean War and became a police officer in Chicago marrying Miss Chicago. Unfortunately he passed in the early 60:s before I was born. Thank you for a pleasant video.

Lenzikka We definitely want to come back and it would be a completely different experience to have all that sunlight instead of darkness at about 4 PM. I’m sure the experience would be just as good as the visit we had in the winter. Thanks for watching the movie I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Have to say this video was one of the best i seen in a long time as it cover so much more. Letting us follow your path in Finland. As am i a dog lover i really liked the dogsled through the snow-covered Finnish wilderness. Loved when your daughter Caroline had the husky sleeping in her bed. Hope you and your family will come back to watch Finland in the summer as it is just like winter something really beautiful and amazing. Have a great 2019 from the southern part of Finland. If you come back i hope you will see The Archipelago of Tammisaari. It is a beautiful place in the summer.

Nothing like going to the land of your grandmother! In 2017 my daughter and I went back to Scotland where in 1905 my grandfather moved to America from. It was so magical to see his home and to see two churches that my 4 and 5 time grandfathers built and are still being used! The people there treated us so kind and as you know with Finland , there is something that can't be explained about returning to country of your roots! Finland is on my map of a place I want to go see! Great video Ken. All the best

Monte Whitefield then you knowand how it felt to stand on the home country soil after so long. Just shaking the hands of a long lost relative is enormously meaningful. I am learning bagpipes I would sure enjoy going to visit Scotland one day

I loved the part at the end with dogs. I was born in Lappland but live in Southern Finland now. It brought so many memories from my childhood and about our family dogs who ran free with me when skiing in the woods. Your daughter is so lovely and so finnish in looks and behaviour.

That was interesting, thanks! I'm from Finland myself, after making a DNA test I found some unknown cousins in Wisconsin. I didn't know my father's uncle had immigrated to US around 100y ago. So many Finns left Finland for N America those days. That 6:30 yellow color was popular especially during the Swedish era, the color comes from the Swedish flag/royals. The Hollola church was a Catholic church originally and became Lutheran after the Protestant reform. In Finland the reform was so powerful that Finland became least Catholic country in Europe and that's still the case. Lapland looks good as always, the tourism has really grown there. I just read someone from the Kardashian family was seen taking selfies in Finnish Lapland. So we are in fashion now I guess :)

Yes my grandparents were like so many others that came over here to create a better life and it’s great that you have that connection too. I couldn’t believe how booked Lapland was - We had trouble even finding a place to stay in Rovaniemi although once we did it was fine because you can walk to the city center and there is everything you need there. Thanks for taking a few minutes out of your schedule to watch our film.

@Alaskan Wolf The orthodox church has around 1% share, 69% are Lutheran. Finland is the least Catholic nation in Europe, with just 0,5% share.

@Alaskan Wolf The Orthodox church has a similar official status as the Lutheran chrch, both collect "church tax" from their members, through the state income tax. To avoid that you have to sign out officially, the Lutheran church has been shrinking for years now.

yellow color in church actually means richer comparing to red (puna-multa) color, nothing to with swedish.

Kiitos for making this film of your trip. It inspires me to hold onto my dream of doing the same. My own great grandfather, Malakias Lahikainen also migrated to America in 1905. He was 21, born in Luusniemi. I long to return to Suomi to reconnect. It is wonderful that you had the opportunity to fulfill this dream, and to take your daughter with you.

@@kenwilliams12 I'm having a difficult time trying to locate a facility to get a covid test there to come home, the Helsinki airport doesnt know if they will be doing the testing when we need it early Feb. the one place in Rovaniemi allows you only to book 1-2 weeks prior. Yikes we need something we can book today for that time period.

@@kenwilliams12 I enlisted the help of my daughter, so together we figured things out....whew! still makes me nervous trying to get a test

I was born in Finland but i live in France, a part of my family is from Hollola and many live ever there. My great-grandfather and other family members migrated to New York in the early 1990s, his wife and their children remained in Finland, he died in an accident at the docks where he was working his family at the time remained in Finland, but the others remained in the USA and others migrated to Canada. I haven't been back to Finland for a very long time, it's nice to see videos like this.

Thank you to the both of you. So good to see you connect with your relatives. I left Malaysia to go to Singapore and work in 1971. My 2 sons were born in Singapore. The Family moved to Perth, Australia in 1992. My Australian born granddaughter will probably find Malaysia and Singapore as fascinating your daughter found Finland. Thank you both once again.

Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching. I used a Sony DSC RX100 V with a very light aluminum tripod that doubled as a selfie stick. On the dog sledding, I had a chest harness with the camera attached to that. It worked well. Since then I have sold it and bought an Insta360 X2 witch is a far superior camera for those kinds of trips...waterproof, 360 images, incredible stabilization and much smaller and lighter. I use Final Cut Pro X for editing.

You can rent the grave spot for a longer time(our family has a atleast 3 or 4 generation spot) and if I remember correct they should just move the stone not destroy it.

ASHG0824 thanks very much for watching and glad you enjoyed it. The dogsledding company was Hetta Huskies. They did a great job and I would highly recommend them. They followed us with a snowmobile which was very helpful especially when I dropped my mitten and realized there’s no way you can back up a dog sled so they just came over, picked it up and gave it to me

What you identified as 'Presidential Place' is not it. More likely the city hall. The Presidential Palace is the last building on the right. And, yes, I was born in Helsinki.

aaro 345 Unfortunately we did not. It was the only thing that I wanted to do that we were unable to finish. There was one very clear night on our second day of dog sledding and we could see the brilliant stars but there were no northern lights
