Just a little clear-up, calling Finland socialist is a bit of an overstatement. Politically we're a parliamentary republic with a "ceremonial" president. The Nordic model, which is commonly called socialist for some reason, combines, on a national level, free market capitalism with ideas of welfare state and collective bargaining. Just because our QOL is high and public healthcare exists doesn't mean we're a Marxist society or something.

TKWeckroth True. There's a stark difference between a socialist state and a social democracy. Finland and other Nordics are completely capitalist as systems (perhaps increasingly so) but provide a pretty good welfare, free education, and have large public sectors, funded by high taxes. It seems to work pretty well.

There are loads of studies and debate and the fact is that there's no definite proof about any particular explanation, only educated guesswork. We go through a couple of different possibilities in school as well. Still, none of the theories I've read have ever linked the name to lakes, only swamps or just "land" in general.

The vikings called the south of Finland "Balstrandr" or "bonfire coast" referring to the signal fires that the finns lit if the passing ships were there to raid instead of trading. This meant that every incoming ship was met with arrows and nightly ambushes. Even the king Olav got his ass royally kicked there according to the viking sagas, so the "resistace was light at best" statement is a lazy guess from somebody that didn't bother to look too much into it. There are numerous hill forts along the coast and archeological evidence to support a network of defences along the coast pre. 1000 AD.

  • @scottkain8977

Been trying to explain this to people for a long time. Finnish defense forces have always been a major threat for any group traversing their land uninvited. And yes I have seen the hill forts, great point. Finland has always been a MFer to deal with during conflicts. What they did to the Russians during WW2 was nothing short of impossible. But Finnish savagery has always been a real difficulty for any nuisance threats to their land, all throughout the ages. They are especially good with blending in to the winter environment and cutting the throats of their enemies. Cheers.

A lot of that old pagan religion was imported, but changed like any other non-centralized religion. It was kinda mix and match of few religions made unique by the way it was understood area by area. Just think how christianity took all the pagan holidays and made them their own. That was just systematic version of the same thing. In older pagan religions it just happened naturally when some foreigner belief sounded reasonable for enough people.

Finnish Faith or Suomenusko had rather Thor-like chief deity Ukko (literally translateable into "Guy") whose name is still used in Finnish word for thunder, Ukkonen. I personally think and I've seen some other people on Internet suggest that if Finnish Pagans had become Organized, the resulting religion would have been quite similar to Shinto. Like Japanese native religion, Finns were highly pantheistic, believing that countless lesser gods inhabited almost every piece and parcel of surrounding world.

The most important god in the scandinavian pantheon was arguably Thor, who wielded a hammer and utilized lightning. The most important god in the finnish pantheon was Ukko, who wielded an axe and utilized lightning. The Ukko's Axe pendant is also almost identical to a Mjölnir pendant.

"Suomi" probably comes from the Baltic word žemē (zeme in Latvian, žemė in Lithuanian), which just meant "earth". Alternative theories are: 1) From an Indo-European word meaning "human". Compare Old Lithuanian "žmuo" and Latin "homo". 2) Same root as in suo, meaning "bog". 3) Same root as in suomu(s), meaning "scale" 4) Same root as in suoda, meaning "to let", "to give" The Baltic theory is probably most likely. Contact between Finnic and Baltic tribes was very heavy. The words for "sister" and "tribe" in the Finnic languages are borrowed from Baltic. (Finnish - Lithuanian: sisar - sesuo(genitive: sesers), heimo - šeima). That š became h because the Finnic languages didn't have that sound.

There was a fully operating hillfort/bonfire alerting system against raiders covering the entire southern Finland and Karelia from coasts to inland. Also many runestones tell deaths of Viking chiefs in Finland. Hundreds of Viking swords have been also found in Finland... So the resistance was hard as possible, still not enough.

Most migration from Scandinavia actually happened after the so called Viking era. Finland was mostly poor and sparsely populated wilderness back then, so from raiding perspective it was pretty uninteresting. They did couple raids though, but overall their affect to the area that we nowadays call Finland was very negligible, especially when comparing to other areas surrounding North and Baltic Sea.

Vikings and finno ugric tribes had a good relationships and were trading partners till year 1000 or so. Finnish and Karelian areas were the main source to get furs so ofc they didn't want to fight with finns. Furs were valuable merchandise especially on the south. Vikings traded most of the furs to islamic silver. Swedish vikings raided finnish areas few times on late viking era, but finnish tribes defeated them and they had to retreat. Swedish rune stones are main proof for this.

I have heard of the Kalmar Union. I know that it was named after the Swedish town of Kalmar. This union was between the areas of Finland (like Abo, Reval and Narva) as well as the south of Norway (Akershus, Agder and Tingvalla) this union was both of trade and military. This union occurred after a Danish proposition because they feared that the Holy Roman Empire wanted to take Hamburg (a significant Danish settlement at the time). Norway feared the Danes would attack if they disagreed and had a lot of soldiers occupied in the British Isles and other colonial efforts. The Swedes wanted support because they feared the Teutonic Order and Novgorod would attack Visby in Gotland. The whole alliance was really built because of fear of outside attack.

A great video, but sadly many of the "facts" mentioned are quite questionable... Do not believe everything told in this video, however much of it was true. Suomi was not, quite understandably, pronounced correctly, nor does it mean the "land of the lakes", for instance. And we are not really the land of reindeer either as one could think from the ending as they only live in the Lapland and most of the Finns haven't even seen them. There were multiple other things that were not correct either, but I do appreciate the effort! Thank you for spreading the word about Finland :P

I had learned a fair amount about the Hanseatic league in History class, and the Kalmar Union was briefly mentioned. Then, it was the other way around when we got to about the same time period in later high school history.

I came here because I’ve been reading a web comic called “Stand Still Stay Silent” it’s a post apocalyptic story set in the Nordic countries and one of my fave characters is a Finish scout. I came to learn a bit more about Finland so I could appreciate more of the cultural references the author drops in to the story. Thanks for making this vid it was fun to watch and very informative. 😁

No it's not correct. It's the same as calling the U.K. "England", with the difference that at least until the bloody 1654-1667 wars the "Lithuanian" (that is Belarusian-Lithuanian-Ukrainian) part of the union was far more significant politically and demographically than Scotland+Wales+N.Ir. within the U.K.

One theory tells that Suomi comes from an old baltic word "zeme", which means land. Another theory says that it might have come from a finnish word "suoda", "suopi", "suo", which refers that the forests and swamps of Finland were good hunting grounds, suoda= allow or give. Then there's the theory that Suomi has simply come from the word "suo" which can also be translated into swamp. But hey, who the hell knows?
