Return Of The Repressed: How and Why We Need To Look At Historical Racist Images Today

Ойын-сауық

A conversation with Svetlana Mitcheva, Director of Programs at the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC), and Artist Andres Serrano.
Tensions over race and racism are impacting every sphere of life in the United States. It is at this crucial moment that Andres Serrano is confronting us with some of the most shameful and painful racist images of the nation’s past. What does it mean to show these images of banal products decorated with racist caricature? And, specifically, to show them today?
In conversation with the artist, Svetlana Mintcheva, Director of Programs at the National Coalition Against Censorship, suggests that the display of these images may function in much the same way as recent protests: as an eruption of long suppressed anger and anguish. Disturbing as it is, looking at these images may constitute part of a healing process where the American historical narrative comes to include, openly, its cruel violence alongside its proud achievements.
