Yea, killing Optimus Prime was a bonehead move. Hasbro wanted new toys, but they underestimated his popularity. Transformers were great because they hid in plane sight. The new toys were unrealistic. Sure they transformed into robots, but the vehicle mode looked nothing like real vehicles. That’s when I lost interest. Still love G1 though.👍

Then they have 4 episodes for season 4 introduced a whole bunch of new transformers like in season 2 and 3. Where did they come from, what's their backstory, where were they when the 'Bots and 'Cons were fighting on ancient War on cybertron before Prime left on the Ark and chased by OG Megatron. Where were they when the Season 1teams were in stasis lock to be awakened by teletran 1 and reformatted with earth vehicles form.

@@scottmahoney1230 This is called a plot hole. I hope you realize the original Transformers series was made to sell toys back in the 1980s. This is why they switched out so many characters between season 2 and 3. You could say that the others were on some sort of deep space mission or colony and out of touch with the rest of the armies.

Fun fact, the scene of him saying this and walking away were switched. Originally they wanted Galvatron to walk away after to leave it up to question if Galvatron truly ended the war. This was before the rebirth was commissioned which makes this 2 parter the potential finale for G1

Turns out, however humble Optimus was at first, that _he_ was the Autobot to light the darkest hour, but only after resurrecting. And bring them All As One by ending the wars, not of just transformers but all beings in the galaxy, spreading the wisdom of the Matrix to even make Galvatron consider peace. (No, I don't count Season 4, to me this is where it ended, heck, if this was redone with a bigger budget, it would look so awesome.)

​@@chrisedwards3214I believe the power masters were introduced the following year so it would've been season 5. Then again the 86 combiners were introduced on the show in season 2 so maybe they could've managed introducing powermaster prime in season 4 if it continued.

What peace? All Galvatron said was that he wasn't going to lead the Decepticons in battle for that day. Nor would he allow the others to lead a battle. It was a ceasefire, nothing more. Even when he was Megatron there were days he declared a ceasefire.

I think it's more like they were the new threat in Season 3 kinda like the Borg were the new threat in TNG. Although the Quintessons were not as scary as the Borg they were an important antagonist during season 3. Also they may be a little close to the Ferengis as well.

The fight between Optimus and Rodimus was brutal, and Optimus delivering the punch to him was even more brutal. But it needed to be done to save the world. It's actually funny that everyone turned to Optimus to save them from the plaque, even though he had no idea what to do at first, either.

@@detmstr341 You're right ,seriously. I think the only other time is when was annoyed with his team when they asked him if he was alright back in the "More Than Meets the Eye" arc back in the season 1. You REALLY have to do something major to either annoy or piss him off.

Love that victory lap at the end with Optimus and the bots just rolling out. Note that Hot Rod was not among them. Also Hot Rod hopefully now has gotten rid of his guilt and being inadvertently responsible for Op getting blasted in the movie. His actions brought about Op's demise but his later actions brought about his return.

@@chrisedwards3214 while you are correct, one of, if not THE, central plot line of the movie is to demonstrate early that Hot Rod is immature, rash, doesn’t think things through, and liable to get those around him into trouble. We see this first played humorously in the leadup to the Seige of Autobot City, but then it becomes deadly (literally) serious when his poorly planned attack on Megatron turns what would’ve been an easy win for Prime (just shooting Megatron as he’s picking up the gun) into the cause of his death. Then, over the course of the plot, Hot Rod has to live with his guilt while fighting for the survival of the Autobots on the verge of being completely exterminated, matures, learns from his mistakes, and ultimately becomes a worthy leader of the Autobots. He meant no harm, but his actions are very intentionally portrayed as reckless, foolish, and directly responsible for Prime’s death.

As a wise man once put it, "The Universe fails to be kind, but sometimes, the Universe get's it Right". And this is a good example. A childhood hero loved by so many, who was killed before being brought back to life. Peter Cullen's Prime will Forever be Optimus Prime.

That little bit had always been one of my favorite parts of this episode. Optimus acknowledging that he knew who Galvatron was. When I first watched this one way back in the 80s I wanted Galvatron to somehow be reformatted back into Megatron in a future episode, I thought hey they brought Optimus back, let's do this thing.

You're right about that. I was one of them.

In my opinion, this would have been the perfect way to end the G1 cartoon. Don't get me wrong, the headmasters and Targetmasters were great but this was too perfect on so many levels. In this two-parter, we see Optimus Prime rise from the dead where the universe needed him the most, to face a monster far greater than Megatron/Galvatron, The Decepticons, The Quintessions, and even Unicron himself could ever dream to be! A monster that lives inside the hearts of every living being and the perfect final boss for Optimus Prime to overcome, hate and violence itself! Much like how the young Hot Rod/Rodimus fulfill his destiny by opening the Matrix to bring down Unicron and become the leader of the Autobots. I see this as Optimus Prime returning from the dead to fulfill his destiny by destroying this madness, not with pure firepower but something far greater than that! The power of Wisdom to bring peace and clarity to the whole Universe! This two-partner was truly some of the best episodes of the whole series, and Optimus Prime opening the Matrix was one of the greatest moments in this 37 long year franchise.

19:15 This moment was absolutely amazing. I was watching G1 for the first time ever this year and even though I'd seen all the Bay movies and the '86 movie, I had no idea there was a scene where Optimus Prime opened the Matrix. Imagine my surprise seeing him open it and hearing The Touch again, I couldn't believe it. This scene made my entire first ever G1 watch worth it!

Galvatron saying "Have I no friends left?!" was really funny coming from someone who outright sucker punches his right-hand man bot (Check out "The Face of the Ninjika." It was really brutal) and often shoots at his own troops for no reason at times. Who the hell would WANT to be your friend doing stuff like that?!

He didn't seem to be in a great place for most of TF:TM and the entire season the theme was that he was a lunatic yet here he was pretty cool and collected. As someone who grew up on g1 Transformers, I can honestly say that I wish that g1 had ended with this episode. Don't get me wrong, I liked the concept of the Headmasters, and Targetmasters from "The Rebirth". As well as Cybertron returning to its former Golden Age glory. But this episode just seems to make everything right. Optimus is back, the hate plague has been conquered through the ancient wisdom of the Matrix, and there is no more fighting for this day. Truly a great end to one of the greatest franchises of my childhood! So grateful that I grew up during this era!

I agree, it ended on the greatest resolution possible and closed out with The Touch. It would’ve been a fitting conclusion for G1!

It could have been the end, but there were more toys to sell! All those Headmasters and Targetmasters weren't going to sell by themselves, and they had to show you how cool Sixshot was so that you begged your parents to spend a lot of dough on that toy too. ;)

That’s why the Japanese headmasters really pissed me off. The first thing they did was kill Optimus and push every other character aside for the new headmasters making them super powered

I love the use of "The Touch" to represent the wisdom of the matrix. The power of music!

This episode was absolutely insanely nuts when it first aired. I had never been more glued to a TV show than I was back then.

I am a gown man from Gen X and every time I hear Touch in the Movie, this episode and on my phone/car I tear up.

I have an odd feeling that the floating head at 18:17 was also voiced by Peter Cullen. Funny, how he voiced two wise and all-knowing (partly) entities in the same episode.

It's definitely him, his cadence and speech patterns by now sound really familiar. It makes sense in a spiritual way too

With how much better the animation was for this compared to the other episodes, (especially S4) plus the all around finale like aspects of this, makes me wonder if this was supposed to be the OG finale to the series.

This episode was animated by Toei, the same company behind the 1986 movie. And yeah, it looks pretty good for TV standards. The season 4 episodes were animated by AKOM, a South Korean studio that's known for its rather... Soso work...

I just noticed that Skylinx doesn't do his usual bravado when Optimus is around. He knows better.

I still remember my oldest brother Eddie and watching this episode. We both got chills from his comment, Yes, Sky Lynx! And no force in the universe will stop me ! Plus from the song too. Eddie would had love this!

I love the ending where Optimus Prime refused Dr Swofford and Morgan's apology. Thanks to Galvatron who walked towards Optimus Prime as he pushed the two aside.

20:24, I never thought I would hear those words and it be genuine. As a kid, this was such a moment!

"No more games Rodimus, innocent lives are at stake!" That about as Optimus Prime as it gets.

Man, I’m getting chills hearing the touch at the end of this episode. Memories.

It put tears in my eyes seeing Optimus Prime being alive again to command the Autobots.

I still remember the great excitement of this episode. Since they killed him twice already it really made this episode tense and exciting not knowing if he'd die again. "The Touch" at the end was great, especially to those of us who hadn't seen the movie and heard the song before. The return of Optimus Prime remains the most awaited and favorite episode of the franchise. There were other good eps, but this one was a BIG deal back then.

Also the artwork / shading looked good on this ep - better than most of the episodes, and more like the movie.

Galvatron fought Optimus Prime in "Dark Awakening" then hears the Autobots reclaimed his body in part 1 of Return Of Optimus Prime, then acts shocked to hear from him in "Return of Optimus Prime" part 2. Galvatron hasn't just lost his mind, he's lost his short term memory too.

Optimus' return was a good thing but too late to salvage the franchise after all the backlash from killing him off. The plan originally was that he was going to be dead for good and Rodimus would learn to be the new leader. But never underestimate the power of upset kids and their parents. The episode Dark Awakening also confirmed that Optimus was to be dead for good, but they had to make this two parter and restore him. For all the hate that Hot Rod/Rodimus receives I do like the character. He was the flawed new leader, having been thrust into the role with no advance training, only that he is the next Prime in the Transformers race that can properly link to the Matrix, unlike Ultra Magnus. Also Rodimus did have the guilt of having inadvertently caused optimus's death in the movie. As to Rodimus, he does revert back to Hot Rod. Look at him after Optimus removed the Matrix, you can see he has physically changed back. Also he is Hot Rod in the ending scenes as well. He has shrunk in size and his voice reverted also. As to any plot holes and animation errors: they can be explained with the simple phrase: They Wanted Optimus Prime back.

True that was the original plan for the movie but one of the producers said we are going to bring back Optimus in the show so it was planned since the movie was still in writing phase

@@primelordoftheuniverse7835 Not quite, I remember one of them said that Prime's body was going to crumble to rust and dust after he turned grey, but they changed their mind in case they decided to bring him back. However the episode Dark Awakening makes it clear his death was to be permanent.

​@@f1fanatic241That line you referenced was in the second version of Dark Awakening, though. The first, original ending to Dark Awakening has Rodimus merely say "Farewell, Prime", but later versions add the narrative.

I always loved the voice acting in the G1 cartoon. I love the Frank Welker mouse squeaking sounds at the beginning. By far Frank is my favorite voice actor.

I really love how confidently Galvatron is leading the autobots in the cave of the path of terror just to get this special metal substance! Very entertaining, I watched it over and over many times.

20:25 Now this, had to be history in the making. I mean c'mon dude, it's straight up mind blowing 🤯... I bet when this episode first aired the audience probably couldn't believe what they'd just witnessed. Infact the same could be said to an audience of fans in this day and age.

as a kid I always thought this was supposed to be a sequel movie, especially with the it ending with Stan bush - the touch (which actually made me cheer as a kid when it came on)

That's crazy, as a kid I always sort of thought the same thing, that this was a sequel movie. Strange how it's just a two parter episode, but my 6 or 7 year old brain remembers it as a movie. Glad to know I wasn't the only one.

I can't express how much i appreciate this episode...

My childhood relived in just an episode….

This episode always brings tears to my eyes as a grown ass man because Optimus Prime will forever be my fave hero of all-time & the face of Transformers

Rodimus vs Optimus was PURE GOLD

Everything in this episode, plus’s the first part is so cinematic. I would love to see the factory fight between Optimus and Rondumus in live action. And that ending when the touch starts playing, dear lord it was soooo satisfying.

Seeing animation errors like at 20:42 throughout the show and movie were a little fun and a good reminder of the hard work people had to do to animate this BY HAND. Mistakes will happen.

If you ask me, the Hate Plague is a concept that is worth revisiting. It hasn't been touched or explored in ages now. I think modern creators should make the effort to explore it again after so long. For as terrifying and dangerous as the Hate Plague is, it should be explored again.

Galvatron's transformation in the cave with the purple sparks was a really nice effect that should have been kept. I remember it all these years later and am still impressed by it.

@@jignat agreed. Good observation. The attention to detail... Even Galvatron's finger pulling towards the trigger on his cannon. In other animations he appears to fire his cannon by some remote thought or impulse like Megatron.

This was just a beautiful episode. It really makes me wish I had the opportunity to grow up when this show was new.

5:07 "Autobots...Transform and Roll Out!" Optimus was back in the swing of things already. And we were NEVER happier. 🙂

Hot take: I understand killing Optimus was an unpopular move and that kids in the 80s generally blamed Hot Rod/Rodimus for his death (although I think it's pretty clear Optimus wasn't going to pull the trigger when Megatron was begging for mercy), but from a storytelling perspective, bringing him back from the dead (especially after the events of Dark Awakening) was a cheap move that devalued all of Rodimus's development. Idk, I've officially seen all of the first three seasons and the movie (I'm doing Headmasters rather than Rebirth) and I'm legit impressed by how well Rodimus was developed. It's by far the most compelling overarching narrative of any cartoon of the era, but I feel it's devalued by Optimus coming back.

Technically, they are brothers because Optimus did say he fought besides someone who he considered a brother, that was Megatron and he is now Galvatron

Imo it is. The shading was above average especially where Galvatron threatens Optimus after he learns about the alloy. When characters transform, there are some extra flourishes. This was the last episode of Transformers Toei Animation worked on.

After his brutally sad death in the movie it was so great and relieving to see Optimus back and back once again as the leader of the autobots!

Ahhh the 80's if there was one decade i could relive that would be it...

I always thought Morgan and Swofford got off easy, considering the potential consequences of their actions.

@@BEase44 But they're really sorry about that. It was a really bad and a very not good thing that they did. I mean, sure, countless untold numbers of sentient lives were lost in mindless violent outbursts and unprecedented property (not to mention probably irreversible environmental) damage done across Primus only knows how many worlds in a galaxy wide spanning 28 days later. But they really want to apologize for that. They really learned a lesson today.

Man can you imagine if Rodimus had gone into the Matrix in episode 1 to see if he could have found a cure to the hate plague before Optimus was revived by the Quintesson and seeing both Optimus Prime and Rodimus Prime standing side by side in this episode would have been awesome.

As far as i'm concerned, this 2 part episode was the true ending of the show with Optimus Prime returning from the dead to not only save the entire universe but to also lead the Autobots once again 16:38 payback for getting killed off in the movie 20:48 the perfect ending with the most iconic line of all time
