RetroView of Nokia N9 | Best Phone Nokia Ever Made

Ғылым және технология

The Nokia N9 was the first and only Nokia phone to run on the revolutionary MeeGo Harmattan operating system, developed within Nokia to combat iOS and Android back in 2011 with one goal in mind: Build the perfect touchscreen operating system, and leaving hardware buttons where they belong; in the past.
In this video I take a look back at the Legendary Nokia N9 showing exactly what made this phone so ahead of its time and how it never managed to become mainstream.
Video Sections:
00:00 - Introduction
00:28 - The Story
01:13 - Software
03:18 - Hardware
05:44 - Final Thoughts
So what do you guys think of the Nokia N9? Have you had the chance of owning one or using it? Let me know in the comments down below!

Shame on Stephen Elop, who literally pushed the company into downfall to fulfill his own personal agenda. He wanted to become CEO of Microsoft, well he didn't became one and that is the reason why ethics and professional standards holds a very imp position. Nokia would have still been the greatest company. Imagine meego greeting ota updates in 2021 with Nokia's own flagship hardware.

For anyone who still wants to experience Meego, it continued development with the team who worked on the N9 when they started their own phone company, Jolla. They made their own phone with similar interface called Sailfish OS, have since released one other phone with Intex but are now limited to running on pretty much just Sony devices. Sailfish OS is still being updated and developed, and can also run Android apps!

A really poetic review that appreciates the beauty and inspiration behind the project. It really does stand the test of time and agreed breaks my heart that we never saw further. I had the n900 and loved it's ancestor. Looking back I can see the loss of the keyboard and stylus as a logical move particularly when you see everything out here now, but at the time really struggled to see the benefit as I had really got used to my portable linux pda with full OS. I really would like to be in the universe where Meego and Nokia soared past android and Ios taking nokia to the present day creating more things of this kind of beauty.

I have 3 phones as daily drivers: iPhone 7 (I had a iPhone X but got water in it just by having a bath so never again I will buy a phone that is rated IP68 but has no warranty for water damage) , Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G and my 10 years old Nokia N9. Never in the history of smart phones will be another one so revolutionary for its time. It still has features that don't even exist this days on most of the phones: double tap screen to wake up, floating clock and accessing the phone, messaging, camera and browser from any app by slightly swapping upwards from the bottom. Nokia N9 is a masterpiece, is art is the best phone ever made and I will always have one as a daily driver.

I had an N8 (still have and still works) and when the N9 came out I was in love with the design that Nokia did. The idea of new OS was also great since I love new and experimental stuff but where Nokia and later on Microsoft failed was to anticipate how important was to have developers work on ypur devices and...make apps. An area where iphone and android where ahead. What the N9 started, MS and windows phone could have made into a true champion of os and hardware...could being the key word.

Hindsight is 20/20. At the time, partnering (and receiving $250mil) with an established player, i.e. Microsoft, was a much more lucrative option than developing your own platform from the ground up. MeeGo simply came out too late at that point, and Windows Phone was a much better better bet. Of course, we all know now that MS ended up mismanaging their mobile OS, bringing the Lumia down with it.

That's my opinion. Why not? Elop used to work for ms after all. And what's at stake? All that tummy user data to sell. Which Nokia wasnt doing. Elop rode the company into the ground and never got fired. His predecessors for let go for far less. Yet he was allowed to keep driving Nokia into the ground.

Actually MeeGo had a successor: Sailfish OS. The same team that developed Maemo And MeeGo left Nokia and founded Jolla. Sadly they only released one phone model, simply called Jolla in 2013. There were plans to release a tablet and a second phone but, due to financial difficulties they never could release any physical device. Today they offer Sailfish OS as a licenced software for Sony Xperia phones and other. And because it has open source license, there have been ports for other devices also. Sailfish OS inherited all the functions found in MeeGo and was a breeze to use. They still release software updates to this day for the Jolla phone.

Agree with many of the sentiments in this video regarding the N9. Never has their been another phone for me blended hardware and software so perfectly and it was just a pure pleasure to use. The hardware feels amazing in the hand and MeeGo like the video states just begs to be used for no reason whatsoever just to experience the beauty of the swipe based gesture UI. The only other dead mobile OS for me saddens me today as much as MeeGo is webOS but the Palm Pre hardware only wishes it was as good as the N9.
