Retrospective: Alex Puccio Regains Her Throne (Vail, 2018)

Ойын-сауық

There are no climbing competitions because of Rona, so I thought we'd look back at some old ones. This is Alex Puccio at Vail, which was pretty cool. Ignore the voice crack @5:00 (I swear I've hit puberty).

Great video! Wouldn't call Akiyo Noguchi a "young up-and-comer" given she's the same age as Alex and has been winning world cups since 2008, but otherwise nice storytelling of a really cool moment

Alex Puccio had done enough to put her on the short list for the best, but the comeback; put her on the list for the legends.

5:49 - Alex's technique here is closer to Miho's (that worked) than to Kyra or Akiyo. She has her left foot on the volume, while Kyra and Akiyo tried to pogo with their left foot. Only difference is that her foot is much lower than Miho's.

As someone just getting into the sport this is awesome. I've always felt that knowing the "Lore" of a sport is more important than knowing the rules.

My all time favorite world cup hands down. The thrill of watching that comp unfold and Alex crushing the final boulder after no other competitor secured the zone! I love watching Alex climb. Love her style.

great video. i am excited to see what alex will get up to in the outside in the years to come as her comp career seems to be winding down a bit. maybe she'll tie in and put up some bold trad lines? she is certainly strong, fearless, and capable.

I always had high hopes for Puccio, yet she almost never delivered internationally. Still one of my favourite climbing girl. Do you have information on Ashimas "downfall"? That would probably make an interesting video. Maybe in connection with Brooke (very promising lately).

I've thought about making a video about that! Ashima has some weird moments where she looks like the best US boulderer (US Open 2019) and some moments where she looks... not. I think the thing that's held me back is, as far as I can tell, a share of her poorer performances (like Hachioji) came due to her dealing with some personal issues. Being 14 and having the label of 'future women's GOAT' placed on her and not living up to that hype must be at least somewhat hard, and I just don't feel great about myself making a video about a 20-year-old woman not living up to the expectations that other people put her. Idk if that made sense, but basically - there's so many crushers out there that I would rather focus on positive stories (like Natalia's 2021 seas) where I can compliment the climbers and fanboy over how good they were. Ashima has incredible technique, and there'll be a climbing styles on her someday where I talk about how great she is, but I just didn't like the idea of making a video focused on her failures.

@@ascentionism Great reply, thanks! I guess it has a lot to do with her father, which seems quite whacky. And I read some hints about her crowd. I'm just curious how things lead to each other. I think you are right about the video, good decission!

It is completely unfair to compare Puccio's "delivering' with women from other countries who deeply invested at that time in climbing and its athletes. Had she had the training facilities and financial support that US athletes get today on the world cup it would certainly had panned out differently.
