Retrofitting My Bike Helmet to Mount A GoPro
Спорт
I needed a way to record POV video without using a full-face helmet, or a chest-mounted camera. I retrofitted a GoPro mount to the visor of my Fox Dropframe bike helmet. If I used a standard GoPro adhesive mount, the camera would block my vision. I had to get a bit creative to come up with a useable solution. I'm not sure if I'd recommend following my lead, and it certainly could use some refinement, but this video might help out others who are looking for a similar solution.

GoPro should start making the sessions again, they were so much smaller

Apart from the built in battery, they were solid cameras. I’d love to see them make a come back with updated internals.
You should see if fox can make you a new visor with a GoPro Mount kinda like what’s on the Giro switchblade

Thank you for this Phil! You’re such a great great rider and even better human being!
Great problem solving and fabricobbling! I like your safety goggles 👍
You'll get it Phil. Your a creative guy
Please keep hammering away at this idea, the helmet view in my opinion is the most exciting!
Hi Phil, thanks for the ideas.. since we have same helmet and I have hero 8..it's easy for me to retrofit it.. I just modified the attachment fitting.. good luck.. have a nice weekend.. from NZ cheers
When do you think your gonna build up your dh bike

He isn’t. He likes a more playful bike and dh bike isn’t enough for him
The high perspective makes the jumps seem like, "is he ever going to hit the ground?" because the camera stays up so high. It also makes me want to hold my head back up high and crane my neck down at the screen to watch the video.
In the settings you can invert your recording and hang your camera upside down so you can access the top button from the bottom. When you open the files it will play right side up. just remember to flip it when you use another mount or hand held footage.
Sick video💪💪
Merry Christmas, Phil.
Great mount and view! Do you think a hero session 5 would fit on a regular mount without blocking the vision??
Lol I just went through this issue with my visor helmet. I settled on mounting above the helmet with no visor cropping, but the angle is still too high and doesn't get a lot of bike/arm/leg in frame. I think the best angle when you can't chin mount would be an elevated chest mount. Not sure how many are doing that now and if it's stable enough. But like an extension that pushes it close to your chin.
Holy crap its Plank from Ed, Edd, and Eddy. Loved the video!

Hi Phil,, I made a mount like this on my forehead using sugru! Im going to be making a comparison video comparing a run i did with a chest mount and forehead mount at the same time.
The GT hat looks cool!
use a 1/4x20 mount, tor drill 1 hole thru visor and secure with wide washer and nut. they even sell out front 1/4x20 mounts so you can mount top or bottom and remove any visor from view. K-edge has a few mounts that I have used in the past. GL and looking forward to your next revision of mount.
Using aluminium tripod mount going through the top of the peak with a screw it won’t lower the go pro too much maybe by 3/8 of an inch then you will be able to tilt the camera to get your angle just right
I glued the sticky pad mount under the visor, that's much simpler than drilling. However, I haven't been able to nail a perfect angle. Either there's no handlebars which is boring or there are handlebars but without enough horizon, so it looks like on the video (I keep adjusting my head watching to see further, ha). Regardless, I think even the chinbar can be too high. Mouth height is already pushing it, but below chin is pretty perfect.

Nice video. I have similar setup on my Kali Maya, but I just attached it to the visor, but If the GoPro is in Stereo mode, even with Windslayer foam thingy - there is sooo much wind noise. Its like I am in airplane, it looks like visor and helmet itself are whistling. Did you have issues with this?
For the Hero 7 case, glue on a pull tab to the back side of the opening lever. Either with a piece of string with a loop to put your finger into or a plastic tab from something like a soda bottle that you can grab onto.
You must have read my mind. I was just trying to figure out how to do this when the video popped up. I really want to take advantage of the old natural head gimbal. I think I can get the position you have, with full case access if I remove my visor. I'm just using production parts and a sticky mount. I didn't stick it on permanently yet because I decided I better scuff the surface a little first. I also picked up a cheap chest mount, but I expect that will be a little to shakey for my old hero 3.
Nice try at solving this problem that is very valuable to solve. I just run a chin mounted cam, but the summer heat is a logical motivation to relocate the camera. I don't like the POV as much from under the visor because it is too downward. Chin cam is tried and true for me. I use a Bell Super 3R because I can detach the chin bar for hot climbs and put it back on for the DH. Still not the best scenario, but I can hang the chin bar on my pack's lug strap thru my gopro mount and velcro strap the bottom to the bottom of pack when chin bar is off.
Like it when you get crafty with Gopro mounts. But is there really such a big difference in heat/weight wearing the Dropframe vs the Proframe? When I want to film I just use the Proframe vs a trailhelmet, even in summer. Doesnt bother me at all. Maybe you could work on the visor a bit more to make it suitable for the hero8?
Happy December Phil! Finally time to hit the trail in AZ! #ChristmasDayShred
Hi Phil, what is the website for the 3D printed mounts?
I got this fox helmet brand new and I would like to mount a go pro on it. But at the same time I don’t want to make a hole in to my brand new helmet. Is there some other way to mount it ?
Thanks this really helpful
Hey Phil. How about if you printed an adapter plate similar to the K-Edge go big camera adapter for GoPro? I think something like that but with a bigger base, maybe 4 mounting screws? Have the plate printed to match the angle of the underside of your visor. If you want easier access to the camera you could make the adapter so that it slides to 2 different locations, one for filming and one for battery replacement. I like that helmet. I may buy one as my old helmet is 4 years old. Maybe I’ll print one up and give it to you to try. I live near Smugglers Notch Ski Area in Cambridge. Let me know what you think.
phils laugh is priceless
Everything all right, Phil? Looking forward to your next video.
The video looks super stable. Was it stabilized in post-processing?
!!?????Hey question Phil!!????? The small black part that comes up from under the visor that u want to stick the bolt through!? Can you shave those two small arms that protrude up. In between the two arms. Just to make them longer. Once they come up long enough u should have enough space to move the adjustment for the angle u want. Great idea great point of set up. I think this can work if u can cut in between those two legs or arms to make them come up longer. Hopefully you get to see this and you understand what I am trying to say. I've never held or seen one of these in person
Just what I needed
Yo Phil! You should definitely make some snowboarding videos during the winter season. I think that would be really cool!🤘
I have a 509 helmet for sledding. It has a weird shape to the visor. I had to just drill a hole and bolt it. Great video
How did you film that snowboard video the other day on IG? I’ve been wanting to film my backcountry skiing this year but my ski helmet doesn’t have a visor.
Hey Phil you should build your DH bike, but also build a hardtail. Hardtails are super relatable as most people have ridden them, so it would be cool to see some bigger lines on one
After paint it will look pretty good. If unable to find adequate solutions to access doors maybe consider ski slalom chin guard (attaches to helmet and keeps gate from hitting face) I think your helmet with frame protection below ears would allow zip ties to hold it tight then you could attach below chin like full face. Good luck and most innovation is trial and error.
I feel like it wouldn't be that hard to modify one of those extension mounts to house it. Similarly, it should be pretty straightforward to take a Hero mount originally intended for FPV Drone flying, and remix it with the hardware you need in order to do that - I'm busy, but would be down to try and help. 95A durometer TPU is going to be the material of choice, and there are places that can print that (if I can't) fairly easily.
Su Gru is amazing stuff, used it on my fullface for gluing mounts, would work just as well in an enduro as well. Strength on it is really good 👍plus you can fit it anywhere you want

I used the mount that the camera sat on from the box, cut it in angles and used 3M tape. Same FOX helmet. 👍
Phil - You can even make riding in the snow look and sound like fun. Great stuff, the Session is probably still the best for that particular mounting scenario, but you lose changeable batteries and stabilization (well, and audio..) OK, so that wouldn't work either.
Hopefully one day Go Pro finally adds a helmet friendly form factor like the Contour Roam and Sena Prism etc. have.
Off topic: Please tell me that you still have your Element. I miss mine...gave it to my daughter meaning to buy a new one and found that they no longer made them :(
What resolution does it need to film in?
It be nice if fox made a visor for go pro or could you make a visor with a 3-D printer
I tried out a chin mount for my first video. It worked pretty well but picked up a lot of my breathing on the mics. I’m gonna run the chesty next time and try that with the new Hero 8
is there a flip in the video so the switch faces down.
What tire is good on snow?
Sometimes you have to get "creative", and make up your own mounts that will give you the view point you want. Enjoy your videos , and the amazing ability you have to carve those downhills with such speed. I guess I am getting old.
best tool to use to cut plastic like that is a vibrating multi tool (vibrating saw) you can normally get a cheap one for like 20 or 30 bucks at home depot or lowes. They are kind of like the ones doctors use to cut off casts with so they don't cut your skin but they cut rigid stuff like butter. Great for plastic, drywall, wood and even nails and metal stuff if you get the proper metal cutting blades.
Just to re-emphasise the hair thing... if the motor is strong enough and enough hair is caught - it will de-scalp you (happens a lot in rural setting with power take-offs on tractors)
Nice helmet, I’ve got the same one 🤙
I dont have action camera but I got this helmet and I can confirm that its amazing.

I don't think the difference in heat between the modern full face "enduro" helmets is significant versus the "half shell" designs anymore. Back in the day...HUGE difference, when full face MTB helmets were almost the equivalent of FF Moto helmets, but that's not the case anymore. I would be surprised if you get hotter at all wearing the Fox ProFrame versus a half shell, and the chin mount...just works great. It seems worth the trade off. I sort of get the overkill effect of a trail helmet being FF, and people thinking it's odd, but I don't care. I can eat crap on a trail ride just as easily as any other time, and I'll take the occasional verbal jab to save my face. "I didn't know we were riding Redbull Rampage today." "I'll remember you said that when you washout in a corner and knock out two chicklets and need plastic surgery to build a new nose." :- )
Love you
I ride with a Giro Switchblade. I have my camera mounted under the visor with no modifications and it works great
Drill a hole under where the epoxy goes. That will help it stick.
Glad I’m not the only one who hates the battery door on the Hero 8. I don’t think I’ve swapped out batteries without it falling off.
Could you do another Walmart bike video(specifically the huffy scout)
I just use a curved sticky mount on the actual lid under the visor and the curved mount that i used to use on my chesty. why make it difficult

Because that’d would block my view as it’d stick down too low. I stated this in my video.
5:07 If it catches a big enough clump it won't rip it out but wind round the spinny thing instead, dragging you in and really making a mess of your face and head (worse if the spinny thing is sharp). Always wear appropriate safety care 7:05 Cable actuated droppers suck balls. They are pain to adjust and to keep adjusted. Rockshox Reverbs ftw
Was tue ride at cochran's?
Knog PWR vent helmet mount...Amazon link in my other post
yeah the visor is in the way of the D.L. :)
I’d say the hell with it and go with the traditional on-top helmet mount. Take the visor off so it doesn’t get in the view frame. Or choose a helmet without a visor.
I liked the view you showed with camera on top of visor. I don't care about seeing your hands. I want to see farther down the trail.
you should used the session cam.. he he.. good video idol.. from Philippines here

Great form factor but doesn't have built in stabilization.
Easy thing you can do is just use normal gopro mount and unclip visor put a little hole (middle one) higher trught the helment and get visor clip in there and you are good.
I'd be happy to work with you in making a prototype for a GoPro case like you mentioned. I'm a design engineer with a 3D printer at home, so let me know if you're interested! Also, thanks for the awesome content. Your channel really got me started biking this summer.

Try mounting the GoPro, using the holes you made, on the top of the visor. That’ll get rid of the issues you have with the visor getting in your field of view.

You want the camera mounted as low as possible. This gives you better perspective. The higher up the camera is mounted, the flatter a trail looks.
I made a tab with tape to more easily remove the gopro from it's case. Did it once and still works 2 years later

I could possibly design a GoPro case for you. I’ve designed cases for other action cameras and multiple mounts. I don’t have a GoPro but saw someone uploaded a 3D model of a hero 7 for mocking up cases on Thingiverse. Thingiverse and Myminifactory are good places to check if someone has already designed one though.

Did you ever consider attaching an actual jigsaw to that blade you used to cut the slots? 🧐 😀
Maybe you should try using Rylo
My question is... Do You really need a visor??? After watching this video I would say thats the part that causing major problem. My peak came of in a crash on my very first mtb trail ride (I realized that on the bottom of the trail 🙂). Never had or felt need to have one after that. Without it, I think there shouldn't be a problem to get perfect angle.
