The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a handheld game console developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It primarily competed with the Nintendo DS, as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. Development of the handheld was announced during E3 2003, and it was unveiled on May 11, 2004, at a Sony press conference before the next E3. The system was released in Japan on December 12, 2004, in North America on March 24, 2005, and in the PAL region on September 1, 2005.
The PlayStation Portable was the most powerful portable console when launched. It was the first real competitor to Nintendo's handheld domination, where many challengers, like SNK's Neo Geo Pocket and Nokia's N-Gage, had failed. Its high-end graphics made the PlayStation Portable a major mobile entertainment device. It also features connectivity with the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Windows, Mac, other PSPs and the Internet. It is the only handheld console to use an optical disc format, Universal Media Disc (UMD), as its primary storage medium. The PlayStation Portable was met with positive reception by most video game critics. The PlayStation Portable sold 76 million units as of 2012.

I have a PlayStation Portable back in the day. In the mid 2000’s, I have Burnout Legends, NFS Most Wanted, MegaMan, Sonic Rivals, Ratchet and Clank and Daxter (Jak & Daxter Spin-off).
I sold mine years ago, and only just picked up another one last week, for free! Psp 2002. Just missing the battery which I've ordered for $17AUD. Stoked to have one again. Brilliant things.

Man, the modding community that the psp created really just made it the most consumer friendly device out there. I bricked my original 1001 like 12 years ago. This year, I bought a used 1001 for like 30 bucks, made a pandora battery, and unbricked my original. Then, my sister gave me one which died to a bad board early in its life, and so I replaced all worn components on both of the now working ones. I just added usb charging to both and replaced the umd drive in one for a 3500mah battery for 14+ hour charges. MicroSD adapters really solve the storage problem too. Such gorgeous, serviceable, and capable devices.

Given that you can even restore old batteries with new cells and how cheap replacement parts are, you can keep these guys running for forever on the cheap.

I will never forget the moment I seen a PSP in person. I was on the bus going home from middle school, when a older guy maybe 18 was playing tonyhawk I was mindblown by the graphics, as it rivaled my gamecube version.

Maan that clicking sound takes me back
I have two 1000s, a 2000, a 3000, a Street and two Go´s - black and white - in my shelf. Bought my first 1000 as an japanese Import model at release in early 2005. Just astounding, that, in 2019, devices like the Raspberry Pi with 1400MHZ are not able to emulate PSP games smoothly. This was an incredible machine.
Ah I remember these. Beautiful little things. I once snuck one into school once. Just me and the Bois playing little big planet in the back of the classroom. Those were the times.
i dont kno why ur vids are so satisfying..?
So nostalgic 😢 I lost mine.. I even played phantasy star online 2 on it
I just found my forgotten PSP at the back of a drawer. Forgot how cool this thing was, i remember spending hours hacking it and spending hours downloading and playing emulated games. I might start playing it again just for old times sake.
I still have my psp 3000 untill now and still working perfectly since i bought it. l mod it when it 1st came out, mod the battery to 9,000mah, used cf photofast adapter 2 raid 2 32gb into 64gb total storage and added handgrip speakers with built-in mp3 player and battery to charge my psp while playing. My overkill mod i have ever done on my psp.
One of the only handheld systems I bought multiple times. I have the original 1000, then I got the Star wars all white edition but it broke 😭. Then I got 2 more plain black 2000s and gave one to my lil cousin. This thing was before smartphones so I used it for games, music, movies radio... The greatest portable game system ever.
Terrific video. Thanks.
I found an old star wars game from my PSP today and am feeling inspired to buy one but idk what to buy. Should I get one with games on it already?
Damn i remember i used to play games on that and now im finding the games from my childhood

My granma got mine for 70$ back in the day ❤ good old memories 🙌
I had a vivid memory of playing on one of these as a kid it was really fun and I still don’t know where it is now
my school bus in middle school went through part of the rich neighborhood picked up some of the rich kids, and literally once that thing dropped, four of them had it within a week. on the way to school we'd gather around and watch as they placed each other wirelessly in some pvp game. it was wonderful

Actually, you can still search and buy content from the PSN store on the PSP itself, even in 2020. Just wait until the error screen pops up, clos it out, and use the search function to find what you want (although there is alot of stuff gone or missing, but it still works).

Still have mine. Started development of my emulator on it(should still be running on it, although I haven't checked in a while, other than compiler warnings popping up now and then). Although my x86 emulator(UniPCemu) is probably quite slow on it compared to others(Dosbox), it does have an interface that's primarily optimized for the PSP originally(which was one of the main reasons I started on the emulator). It also has a gaming mode with customizable keys like Dosbox, but it's configurable while the emulator is actually running in a easy way(using the mapped on-screen Danzeff-based keyboard for mapping the keys to the buttons). It's essentially a Danzeff keyboard with a more compact layout, which is pretty usable if you know the general location of the keys on a qwerty keyboard(it essentially divides such a keyboard up into 9 compartiments, chosen using the analog stick like Danzeff, but only shows one of those compartiments(the one that's selected) for a more compact layout. Also each compatiment has 4 keys from that section of the qwerty keyboard(e.g. qwer, tyui, op[] instead of abcd efgh ijkl). So if you can touch type, it should be easy to use it(knowing the location on the keyboard in a rough way is enough). And then ctrl and alt are mapped to left/right(up for both at the same time), while shift is at the right shoulder trigger. Then the start button makes it switch to mouse mode, where square and circle are mapped to the two mouse buttons, the ctrl/alt/shift being mapped the same. And finally there's Gaming mode, where most keys(except select) are mapped to keys or key combinations. Select takes it back to the last mouse or keyboard mode(whichever one was selected). It's entered by pressing down on the dpad.
PsP is one of the best handhelds (especially in games, specs is a different story)
