Retro Review: Might & Magic II: Gates to Another World

Ойындар

In this video, I take a look at Might and Magic II. It's available on most 80's computer system, as well as the Sega Genesis. This was a very early attempt at an open world RPG. Let's see if it succeeded.
Thanks a lot for watching.

Fun Fact: the C-64 port of this game was John Romero's first professional gig as a programmer.

    0:55 - Correction. M&M2 wasn't made in 1998, it was made in _1988_

Crazy how much was put into a Genesis game. Great review! I've tried my hand at MM2. It's too much for me at this point, but I love how much this Genesis version gives you in box. It's so sad console gamers have been shafted in the manual and maps department. In 35 more years I guess we will get to make up our own rules and maps and our game consoles will be eye lid attachments. Thanks for an awesome look at this game and congrats on only dying 71 times. I am sure I died 8 times just wandering the city and looking for an inn.

The SNES port for example has even more quality of life, not only the named spells, but also showing remaining HP for each monster in battle. For example. And also the music and SFX fit better, on Genesis they often sound off or glitchy (spell effects f.e.). So unfortunately (I also started and grinded the Genesis port for 15h yet) the SNES port seems to be best in my experience so far.

Played this game for over a year on the C64 then another year on the Amiga! Never beat it but I had fun trying to map every square of the game world. Still have both boxed copies. :)

11:32 It doesn't look as if the backrow works in the Genesis version as my backrow robber and sorcerer keep getting hit with full force

I like that the Genesis version of the game has blast processing.

Might and Magic 3 starts off really hard too the moose rats in fountain head are brutal. Might and Magic 6 has good difficulty curve it starts off easy with goblin genocide 😂

That's really fascinating to see how the same developers handled game difficulty over time. Later games being more accessible in the beginning seems to be the trend with these types of rpgs.

Played this without knowing anything about the world. So missed so many things to do, had to get a walk-through when I played it again.

i think this series is easiest to dive into with either World of Xeen or 6, which arent even very hard

I picked up one through eight from GOG. Working on, for blood and honor, right now.
