This is a full longplay of the Atari Jaguar version of DOOM, played on the Ultra Violence skill setting. This was one of the earliest home conversions of the game and as such features many cutbacks from the PC original. That said, it still looks and plays very well, and unlike some of the later home ports (PS1 and Saturn), it features the PC sound effects package.
This footage originally came from a live Let's Play I recorded for this game several years ago. Feel free to check that out here: • DOOM Full Playthrough ...

Hey guys, just a heads up that I have a full Let's Play of this game (what this footage originally came from) on my main channel. Check that out here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l46Gj6uPfq2nfLQ.html Also, I have a separate Let's Play that featured my friend, Ronny, and he was able to bring a lot of neat information to the video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKCcmcSjhrjQldY.html I plan on doing an updated Let's Play soon. If the footage isn't too large in size, I'll upload it to this channel as well as an updated Longplay.

The Jaguar version is the only console port that does not feature any music during gameplay. This is because Jaguar's mathematics co-processor DSP chip also handles playing music. As Doom uses the DSP for most of the collision detection and other things, the DSP does not have enough free cycles to process music while running the other game functions. The port does, however, have music for the title and intermission screens. Possibly due to lack of music in the maps, the intermission screens feature renditions of selected tracks from the PC version soundtrack instead of a dedicated intermission track.
It’s the first time I ever played doom and to this day I never play the original doom with music. The game is way more creepy without it.

I always thought "Could it run Doom" was more fascinating than "Could it run Crysis". To see what they had to do to squeeze this game and get it working on certain hardware is phenomenal. You see some ports having to make concessions, like this port taking out the music. You felt like companies were trying to utilize every ounce of power from these consoles to get them to run Doom _as close_ to the PC version as possible, and getting closer and closer with each port that was made. Obviously the PC version will always be better. But is it not cool to see them condense Doom to get it to run on a SNES? It's like getting Skyrim to run on your toaster oven. Seeing Doom run on more limited hardware is like seeing something that violates the laws of physics. That was the great thing about gaming back then. Everything felt like "magic". You think about the leaps and bounds it took to create FPS games (or just first person games in general) in the first place, the innovative programming techniques they had to come up with and how you saw each early FPS game slowly build off of the same technology. The "race to make things 3D" was mind-boggling. Honestly games like the original F-Zero, as primitive as they can be viewed now, were super interesting in how they got it to work. You saw early attempts at 3D move from simply rotating a 2D background layer to make it "look" 3D, with 2D sprites that zoom in and out as you get closer, to actual fully explorable worlds that are rendered from 2D maps yet you can walk around in first person as if they're fully 3D environments, with geometry realistically shifting based on your position and perspective. When we finally got "True 3D' with Quake, it was just amazing, you saw so many leaps up into that point. Then seeing consoles trying to run PC games was another spectacle in itself. I prefer older games for a lot of reasons. A lot of it is just gameplay style and creativity of older games. But one thing that definitely adds to the charm is being able to spot when a game was using technology that was new to that era. The parallax scrolling for the backgrounds of Castlevania 4, or some of the rotation effects used for stages in that game. Obviously that's kind of unfair to use as a point against modern games (like modern games still make technological leaps, but the technology is so developed that advances are becoming smaller and harder to notice, so it's not those games' "fault"), but does seeing the technological advancement still put a smile on my face when I play and watch these old games? Absolutely.
Back in the day I had a crappy Packard Bell PC and Doom lagged pretty bad and it was so annoying…how bad? When you shoot a pistol it would stay in that frame for 5 seconds Atari Jaguar Doom was the perfect alternative choice when I was a kid because I didn’t have to deal with that lag anymore 😂
This is pretty good, the colors are nice and strong and well, colorful.
A Jaguar cost about $250, and Doom was probably $50. Still cheaper than buying a new PC that could run the original version back then, so I can see why this would have been a viable alternative for some.

I still can’t believe that the Jaguar version of Doom was the original console version and that it was the only console port developed by ID Software themselves. ID Software really supported Atari and they have also showed great support to the Jaguar despite the fact that the system flopped hard. But at the time, the Jaguar was the only console on the market that used PC parts, and this was likely the reason why ID chose the Jaguar as the base platform for the console port of Doom because it was the only console on the market that could handle the game while keeping most of the elements from the PC version intact, unlike most of the other ports that have been made. There was also the 3DO, which would have handled the game just as well, if not better than the Jaguar version if it was developed by ID Software instead of what we unfortunately ended up getting from Art Data.

@@Shpoovy Do you are have stupid? Consoles didn't have 52X speed CD drives and even they were slower than cartridges! It's the decompression that caused loading.
Out of respect for ATARI president Jack Tramiel , swastikas were removed from the game . Jack Tramiel was a Holocaust survivor of World War 2 .
This version is more terryfing by the fact than the colors are more dark and theres no music
HOW WAS THIS POSSIBLE ON THE JAGUAR
@GameplayNoTalk

It was possible because the Jaguar was a capable machine for the time (1993/1994).
this game was done on an outdated system compared the a new pc.
good port but the lack of music completely ruins the mood imho, even the 32x fart music is bettter than nothing
Some people say this port is scarier without the music but I don’t find doom scary at all it’s Just boring without the music
Where is the music? Better in Super Nes

BirdsofDestiny This was the best version at the time, because it allowed me to put on my own music. Skinny Puppy was a favorite.

Okay Just Someone said they play doom atari just in a Ps1 Controller
WoooW, for 16 years i tout those 2 new levels were specefically for the gba version, but nope, those were specially made for the jaguar version, also the jaguar version is better, it has a higher resolution, has red blood, killed monsters will not disappear, Trough i will always wonder why they decided to port the 64bit jag version to the gba rather then porting & upgrading the snes version to it,besides they decided to port the jag version to the gba in the last minute rather then using their own graphics engine wich took 9 months for eventually nothing, mmmm.

The GBA version is based of the Jaguar version actually.
13:55 (and this is why I play on the source port GZDoom so can turn autoaim off.)
No music? So it’s kind of a worse version of the PSX release
No music Decent Sound In total ok port
Horizontal resolution is halved, and no music (because the CPU is being tasked for doing graphics), but those are very good decisions from the developers, but it shows the Jaguar is weak.
So empty with no music
I think each port of Doom has their own pros and cons. JagDoom plays pretty well but has almost zero music. 3DOom has killer music but plays badly. 32XDoom plays decently but has music made several octaves too low. Saturn Doom looks good but runs like shit because Carmack was a bitch and hated warping walls. SNES Doom has pretty good music and levels but shit controls and no rooves/floors. Every Doom port is unique.
No music? What the fuck Atari?
