The Master System is quite an interesting console. Even though its PSG chip is considered to be "weak," I still think it can make good music when utilized properly (as I've made a couple of Master System tunes myself). By the way, the FM chip in the FM Sound Unit and the Japanese Master System is a YM2413, which is a cost-reduced YM3812 (which was used in the AdLib/SoundBlaster PC cards in 1987/1989). This chip has 9 sound channels (6 when percussion mode is enabled), and on the YM2413, only 1 custom sound can be used with 15 preset patches that can be used at any time.

it's cool to see how the PSG was still on the mega drive too, and how it was used extensively to layer on more details on top of the FM music, usually the high synth sounds and noise channels were used, but some really drove it for all it's worth (sonic and streets of rage did this so tastefully) also, this demo pretty much opens all registers at certain points, most of the high pitched lead sounds throughout are PSG. ofcourse they can afford to use all the 4 channels of the PSG to simulate delay for a single instrument and all that stuff, as it's a supplement to the FM synth and it's 6 operators (well, 1 is pretty much saturated playing PCM all the time with that crazy beat going on) but it's still a good example on how PSG certainly still has its uses :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/mYuKz7Ktopy1YMo.html gotta love the demo scene. anyway, i like myself some chiptune sounds, i have a bit of a soft spot for the gnarly bass sound on old game boys too but my biggest love would be the C64's sid chip though, that thing was a monster. (and really hard to handle, kinda like FM synthgs)

@@iwanttocomplain speaking of trackers, i started my computer music endeavours on screamtracker on ms-dos then moved on to impulse tracker, then modplug tracker, and now use renoise. (a tracker style DAW with heavy emphasis on sample-based instruments, but also with full vst(i) support) so i know my way around regular old trackers that use samples, had an escapade or 2 in deflemask in more recent years aswell, but i still think nothing about FM "oscillators" is logical the (self)modulating options and matrix do make it hard for me, even when i use VSTis with a proper interface like oxevst, i still don't have have a clue what's going on :') playing with FM synths it feels like i'm just hitting some knobs until it sounds right, no rhyme or reason for it to me, whereas in additive synthesis it is a piece of piss to to predict how a sound will change, stacking up elementary waveforms to modulate the sound comes a lot easier to me, i did once make an additive synth in java so i guess i do know a lot more about the fourier series. also, i actually vaguely remember the MSX from back in school, we had a philips MSX2 over there, i should refresh my memory on how it sounded again i know the japanese master system had FM indeed from the guys from game sack, they would play the FM music for the games that supported it, the FM is usually to the detriment of the sound effects though, a lot of effects on the PSG sound pretty cool without having that FM clang, that weird tonality despite the fact it can be thouroghly inharmonic. played the shit out of dune2 on the amiga back in the day too, but well, that was on the amiga, which is sampled, and it was dune 2, so i'll check out dune now :)

@@dutchdykefinger Thanks for all the info. KZread doesn't seem very good at telling me when I get replies I literally happened to notice this response when re-watching this video. You might be interested in the FMDrive VST plugin by www.alyjameslab.com/. I should have mentioned, I use Sunvox for a tracker on my iphone which could be good if you want to compose on the go and its quite powerful. I'm a total tracker noob and just had to look up additive synthesis so you are assuming maybe a bit more knowledge than I have lol. I can't even program. :( I recently discovered a website called modarchive.org which can have some gems going back to user submitted mods from the 90's! I leave it on random sometimes in it's popout java player and some real gems can turn up.

I had also this console for Christmas 1988, my first console. So good memories... When I was a kid, I did not know the NES was the winner, the Master System had all the good ports of the arcade games I loved, Shinobi, After Burner, Out Run, Wonder Boy, Double Dragon, R-Type, etc. combined with very good original games and RPGs. Back then, if I knew the NES was the best selling machine, maybe I would have wanted the NES over the SMS. But just by looking at the games, the SMS choice was obvious.

In Brazil, Sega Master System, it's very popular in past and today. Defeat Nintendo and sale more consoles in comparison of the rest of the world. The TecToy, which made products Sega in Brazil, released consoles after 25 years. Recently, 2017, released Mega Drive with cartridge slot, selling thousands of consoles. Sega and TecToy has a strong parcery. For the happiness Brazilians fans.

The Sega Master System has a special place in my heart. I have spent so many hours on so many good games on it, especially rpg's or action/adventure games such as y's, golvellius, golden axe warrior, kenseiden, wonder boy 2/3, ... The psg was maybe not the most powerful soundchip back then, but the musicians put it to good use and the talented ones created catchy tunes. Really I have fond memories of this console and still play it through emulators.

People sometimes say that Mega Drive versions of some games are just superior, but they don't think of the time it was launched. We couldn't afford a Mega Drive, so I played ports like Golden Axe and Sonic. It was very fun, I didn't mind their limits, and if they weren't made I simply wouldn't have played any version of them.

The SEGA Master System was my first owned system back in 86-87, and I still own that same system today.. "Safari Hunt, Hang On and Snail maze built in" Mark 1 Master System.. I have always been a fan of SEGA that started in the Arcades.. I come home from School one day and was surprised by a gift "My parents got me a Master System plus unit" two pads and a light gun :) I was happy for years.. I did have a load of good games that I sold back in the 90's, gutted that I sold them, I still have a few of my original games.. In the 80's I would of either played SEGA or Commodore because that is what we had in our home.. SEGA Master System was a fair bit better than the Nintendo Entertainment system..

The Master System was fairly popular in Italy. Not anywhere near in numbers to the Commodore 64 mind you, but yet I think for a while it was the most common console on the market here. Now, as I was used to microcomputers with their (often amateurishly) western developed games, the Master System seemed pretty much arcade quality at home to me. My first console. Even though I'd played the 16-Bit version, Ancient's Sonic was the first one that I put considerable effort into completing. It kept myself, my sister, and various visiting cousins occupied for afternoons, evenings, and nights as we took turns trying to finish it (I would eventually manage it before them). It was so intense that I would have blurred vision after long sessions sometimes. Outrun was my first driving game and with no knowledge of the arcade version back then, it was the definitive racer for me and all of my friends and family. The soundtrack had some of my first hummable chip tunes and gave me a lifelong appreciation of game music.

I'm Brazilian and I watched the anime when I was a kid, and I could finally listen to the original songs (actually the full album) some years ago because of KZread. I always wanted to play Ys, but I didn't understand English back then, when I was nine. Now that you mentioned it, I'm kinda willing to play it and the Phantasy Star games as well. Good thing is, there're Brazilian Portuguese Phantasy Star ports! Thanks for your video, it brings me good memories. Have a nice one!

I admit the nes was better overall but I have to say the graphics and arcade games on master system to this day are wonderful and have nes beat in that department. Great memories. Spellcaster especially was a unique game with a top down perspective at the end.

One of my favorite systems to play and collect for, I absolutely love it! Criminally underrated in the States, I wish to god I had known about it when I was a kid but alas, I didn't even know it existed back then! I actually owned a Game Gear and had no idea I was playing what was essentially a portable Master System! If I had known of its existence as a kid I would certainly be an even bigger fan of it. I especially wish I had a chance to play Phantasy Star as a kid as it probably would be my favorite game of all time right now if I had. As it stands now it is on my top 5 list.

This is your best production yet Mark. I also got the Master System in 1988 for Christmas. Yes, it was totally the losers system here in central Wisconsin, USA. I remember inviting this other kid over to play Double Dragon and he replied, "I'd rather play Atari than stupid Sega!" Obviously, he'd never tried it. His loss. I really only knew one other kid around here too trade games with, but I was always a stern supporter of the underdog. Besides, all my other friends had a NES, so if I wanted to play that, I'd just go to their houses! I do regret selling seven of my original collection, but I had no understanding of collecting/value/rarity back then...

For sure. Needless to say, I never asked that kid to hang out again. I was just inviting everyone over to play two player Double Dragon back then. Good game or not, everyone was irate that the NES DD was single player. The whole novelty to the arcade game was the simultaneous two-player action. We didn't even complain about the flicker on SMS!

There was a lot of advertising for this back in the day in Argentina, the master system shown on then looked exactly like the japnese one, I think. I remember a special deal or somesuch wich included the gun, the 3d glasses, and afterburner. And sonic was built in the machine aswell! I really wanted that, but my parents weren't big on videogames, so I ended up getting a pc a few years later. None of my classmates had a master system, they either had famiclones or (eventually) genesis or snes.

Ahhh, my first ever console! I have a real soft spot for the Master System, and I still enjoy collecting for it. Aladdin was a game I only really played recently. Fun game, if rather easy thanks to it's unlimited continues. I played a lot of Shinobi back in the day, to the point where I could beat it on one life. The Master System port of Castle of Illusion even managed to be better than it's already excellent Mega Drive counterpart, and also spawned it's own exclusive sequel, Land of Illusion. Also a great game! Also, nice job in showing a few games I've never even heard of. Both Machine Gun Joe and Super Racing are both completely new to me, and it's great discovering new things like these. Great episode, looking forward to the next one, and merry Christmas!

First of all, fantastic work. Your enthusiasm for the system was clear. Also, what great timing. Just a few weeks ago, after watching Conan the Barbarian on DVD, I had the urge to play some Rastan which led to me playing a whole bunch of Master System, which was a lot of fun. I'll get back to that. I'm from the US, but I was one of those kids that ended up with a Master System for some reason. The NES was already popular, though it was still fairly early on, as I think I got the SMS in 1987. I was quite happy with it. Replaying a bunch of SMS games recently, I actually came to the conclusion that the early SMS library is better suited to my taste than the early NES library. Most of my favorite NES games are not among the early ones, and are from about 1989 and later. For example, I had Rambo for SMS (Ashura in Japan and Secret Command in Europe) and it seems pretty advanced for a top-down, run-n-gun game made in 1986. I find it more fun than Commando or anything else similar from that time period. So looking back, I feel lucky to have had the SMS during that period. You covered most of my favorites. My mom surprised me with Rastan when it was relatively new. I was familiar with the arcade game, but I had no idea it was on SMS and was shocked to see a Taito-branded game. I loved it and played it a ton. It was a little odd going back to it at first, but I got used to it and found that it held up nicely. Shinobi was another favorite. It's my favorite console port of the game due to the PC Engine version missing too much stuff. It would have been amazing with a larger HuCard. I loved Double Dragon as well and I still like that it's more like the arcade game than the NES version. I also played it with my brother, but he was worthless for anything that wasn't a sports game. I also really liked Penguin Land. Thanks to an emulator and save states, I was finally able to play through the whole thing during my recent time playing SMS. I finally got my money's worth on that one 30 years later.

Didn't own one as a kid since I'm from Costa Rica where the NES was just as popular as it was in the US back then. However I was always intrigued by ads and reviews in old magazines like Game Players and EGM and really wanted to give it a try not knowing the GameGear I used to play at a friend's house was for the most part the same system in portable form. Thankfully emulation came into play at some point and I experienced many games that way. I Curently own a Japanese model CIB and a modified US version with an FM module and an Everdrive (got them like 10 years ago). Thankfully western releases still have the code for FM sound and will play it as long as the hardware is detected/present in the system.

rockmanhunter Have to agree with John S. Imho the PC-Engine (Turbographix in the US) was a lot better than the SMS and far less well known outside of Japan. Nonetheless I'd appoint the title of most underrated system to the Colecovision. Relatively unknown to non-retro gamers, but just look at the graphical difference between it and the 2600. That was a giant leap. Doesn't mean that the SMS is not indeed a great system. The NES, the SMS and the PC-Engine were all outstanding systems, unfortunately most people just seem to remember the weakest (the NES) and then only the Mario stuff on it.

Growing up in Canada, as a kid absolutely nobody I knew had one of these things. I was curious about it because it was advertised pretty heavily in my area during cartoons, and I knew R-Type, Space Harrier & Shinobi were cool. But from reading North American magazine coverage, I was convinced for years that it was a weaker machine than the NES. It seemed like it was always being described as the little machine that couldn't. Looking at it now, seeing how many more colours per sprite it can manage and characters in general being larger, it makes me wonder how that ever happened. But I read recently that Sega of America initially only had two guys in its marketing department, and after Tonka took over I'm sure they had little understanding of how to play the PR game in the tech space. Europe really lucked out with Virgin picking it up, a company who absolutely knew how to get things in front of people and make them look cool. But when you consider that Sega of Japan dropped the system entirely when the Mega Drive launched at the end of 1988 (seriously, only one game, Bomber Raid, trickled out after that in Feb. '89), the 5 years it lasted in North America almost doubled its Japanese life span. So maybe it wasn't so bad in the big picture after all.

@@RetroCore While Nintendo were indeed corporate mobsters, I don't think Sega helped their own cause. If Sega had a fatal character flaw in that period, it was absolutely them cheaping out all over the place at the height of Japan's economic bubble. Mark Cerny mentioned they were only allotted a 3 month dev cycle for games, and were under a lot of pressure. And you mentioned in another comment their refusal to spend on enhancement chips. I've also read in exec interviews that Rosen simply wasn't interested in pursuing other people's games for their hardware. As draconian as Nintendo were, there was still a mountain of arcade & PC games still out there to be had. You can see it was only when they launched the Mega Drive in 1988 that they finally figured out how the game had to be played. All of the JP Master System's 3rd party & licensed (R-Type, Double Dragon, Ys) titles only appeared from spring to December '88. Given that the MD was announced that June, I'm sure these things are connected.

As someone who wasn't born during the 8 bit era and that has had to discover and investigate these console line ups, I think the MS is good, has some pretty good games that are worth checking out, and it helps that they are so colorful, though I reall hate it's PSG sound 90% of the time, however the main issue is that it doesn't have that many games, it's not Jaguar levels or something like that but it just doesn't have as many games as other classic systems, and it doesn't help some of the good games it had were ports of super scalers games or games that were also on the Mega Drive and that while good for the hardware, are just not more than a curiosity at least for me, and that reduces the number of worth playing games even more; it would have been interesting to see how games made by Capcom, Square, Chunsoft, SNK, Sunsoft, Hudson, Technos, Konami or Rare would have been for it, but that sadly just didn't happen thanks to Nintendo's awful monopoly at the time. Also, I have never read that MS sold more than 20 millions, all sources say it sold over 10 millions, where did you get that information?

Also, you're partially incorrect about Zillion. Some of it did get dubbed into English, and got aired on obscure US networks in the mid 90s(And of course released to VHS), when the Anime boom really started to take off here. I had a cousin who had an SMS, and I loved it. I was surprised I never saw one in the wild and never could pick one up though - it wasn't until, maybe, the mid-90's that I was clued into Nintendo's monopoly shenanigans with their anti-competition policies that kept games off the SMS (and also forced stuff like the Konami/Ultra situation so publishers could put out more games on the dang system). Nowadays I got a couple SMS games for Retro clone consoles, but I tell ya - after seeing that TecToy variant with Sonic on it at 5:31, I kinda wanna nab a legit console. I _knew_ it was more popular elsewhere, but I didn't know some of the licensors like TecToy and Samsung made some different shells for the hardware. That's pretty cool. Anyway, Merry Christmas!
