Personally have never used a retractable leash...saw it more "older folks" use with their "small / tiny " dogs but now admit the way you used it ...the retractable leash is totally eye opener! BTW many people in Madrid, Spain have liked my / your HE BITES t-shirt!!! Love it and so comfortable looking forward to next tee SHE BITES! Ohhh Yeah!!!

We live 2 minutes from Canada's 2nd largest urban park and the flexis have been invaluable (leash laws, coyotes/deer). I do use the release (25 feet) as a reward. If they walk nicely in heel, they get their break.

My 8 months Standard Poodle just went from a hand free leash to a retractable one so I can train him on his recall to heel position. I didn't want to get a very long lead and have to row it in. That's so annoying. I also use it for my 70 lbs puller and reactive dog and it has made him less reactive over time because he gets his fixation off of the sniffing and tired out going back and fourth when he feels the tension. I used to be those type of people who would never touch a retractable leash, but I had to at least try it to hate it. In the end its a great tool in the right hands.

I love them, that's exactly how I use it. I have one that has a continuous flat line nice and light, flexi brand. Great all purpose leash if you use it responsibly if on a budget.

Andy is showing exactly how I use it. I have arthritis in my hands and knees. It's long enough to play ball, but I can lock it short to walk along a busy road. The retractable leash is the only way I can take my puppy for long walks without pain and making my hands worse. She's still being trained to not pull so it's hard on my hands and until she stops pulling my mother isn't able to walk her with her shoulder problems. Even when she stops pulling I have to worry about her getting spooked and pulling it from my hands. My leash has to be belted on no matter what. This is not often mentioned when people are shamed for using a retractable leash. I attach the retractable leash to my fanny pack so I can go hands free when I need to, but I don't let her run wild with it like a moron. A retractable leash is the only way I can walk my own dog and I keep a backup normal leash in case the spring malfunctions, something that CAN HAPPEN.

Trying retractable with my sniff and pull stand poodle. Changed our walk completely!! He gets to sniff around and I’m trying to train him to know when he feels tension he needs to come back to me.

Hey, I'm curious on your thoughts on something! Leash laws here require leashes on trails and walks in the nearby forest. My dog became leash reactive on a short leash after being attacked a few times while on it. We still use the short leash during neighborhood walks for good control and we are working on the reactivity, but since he's perfectly well behaved off leash, I compromised with a long leash for trails. It's not too convenient though because it gets caught on bushes and branches and quickly becomes a tripping hazard. Do you think a retractable would work for that situation?

Andy, I am really enjoying your videos here on KZread, and this one is very informative as always. We (me and my family) will be getting our new Labrador puppy on July 15th. I am highly considering a Patreon subscription for a few months from you to get us started on training. One thing I was wondering is, Do you have a link/s to a website/s, favorite brands (other than Jolly Ball) and/or an Amazon store link where you purchase your training gear such as your slip leashes, collars, long leads, food/treat pouch, training bumpers, etc? I want to make purchases for my pup and his training gear one time without making mistakes or sacrificing quality. I understand that items will wear over time and will need replacing, but I want to start off knowing which items are well made from the start so that I can avoid any other "useless mall junk" (as my husband and I like to refer to it). I would greatly appreciate links to your favorites possibly with referral codes so that I can continue to help support what you're doing here for all of us. Thank you, Andy.

I knew they could serve a purpose. I unfortunately saw someone "training" with one at a public park last night the wrong way. His dog tried to bolt at me and my shiba inu. He kept walking the same way as us, we were in the street, them the grass. Then the dog tried to bolt at a rabbit, he locked it and the dog flung into the air. It was a larger breed, maybe 9-10m puppy. Watching it all was quite atrocious... I felt like they had no basics and the dog didn't respect him.

A client once unclipped a Flexi leash when the dog was on the other side of the room from where I was holding the handle and the clip hit me in the shin. I still have the scar! 😅

What would you do if the dog ran off unexpectedly? How would you grip that skinny lead? I use a long line on my 50kg American Bulldog and it can be a nightmare if I get caught up. His recall is great but he is certain dog aggressive so those moments when he’s in high prey drive I need good grip on that lead.

What about the... button?... that fixes the leash?... I just don't understand, my doggo can suddenly run while on a retractable leash, I push the button and stop her? Then, if she's really unresponsive to me, I pull my hand back with my dog repeatedly and just unbutton-button the leash while my dog is beside me... Sorry if I may sound frustrated, I'm currently trying to teach my dog to walk calmly and not pull like a crazy beast, and everywhere people seem to say 'lol you're crazy for using a retractable leash'
