I really like the fact that all the retouching you do is on top of a varnish layer that is still removable. For me, this keeps the integrity of the aged original painting for the next generation. Thank you

I find this fascinating. I’m a digital Retoucher working with photographers and I paint on the side… When I paint I sometimes flinch for a ‘ctrl-Z’, so I am very impressed at the dedication of Art Retouchers. It must take a lot of knowledge and confidence.

I liked how he kept the paint loss on the side it

We had a problem with a damaged painting years ago. The picture was stolen by someone who didn't have a hope in hell of selling it on and was recovered in a much injured state. It was insured, but for some months they refused to pay out. Claiming they needed to see how damaged it looked AFTER it had been restored to access degree of payment! As you can see from this restoration video you can't permanently replace what has been lost. What's lost is gone forever. You can only make those losses less visible. They paid out eventually, but can you imagine them doing that with cars? LOL

Love these videos of professional restoration jobs. After the retouching, did you not add another layer of varnish? You don't say so, though.

Thank you for these videos! I'm not sure if you follow up on older videos' comments, but I was wondering about the strange pink area on Catherine's left shoulder (seen e.g. at 4:46). It must be a highlight on the velvet material, but I assume it has possibly been discoloured by time, as the pink seems misplaced currently, especially contrasted to the abraded highlight. Could you kindly comment on this? I'm wondering if retouching such an area is something that would have been discussed.

In my experience as an intern conservator, it's all done by eye. Computers are good at matching a single specific color, but everything on a painting like this is a mixture of colors, often applied unevenly, that has to be adjusted constantly. It's a real puzzle sometimes to figure out "how the heck did they make that color!?"

Numbering the sequence of the videos would be helpful.

I've watched several episodes about the restoration of this painting. HOWEVER, no one ever comments on the Elephant in the painting, i.e., the grossly oversized right hand.

Good - and open about your process. But if we look at the disaster of the restoring of the Leonardo's Salvatore Mundi has utterly vandalised the original intention if you look at the original after cleaning, as seen on the recent Guardian article that showcases the differences that many weren't aware of.

Why wouldn't you use a Mahl stick or a bridge, though? Touching, and frankly at some points it seems leaning with some weight on the canvas with your hand seems at odds with the care presented during this restoration. It feels like an unnecessary amount of stress and risk that could easily be prevented.

It's a fair point, and I've seen some conservators do just that. The touching is less of an issue at this stage of conservation since the painting has already been varnished once, but the flexing stress is something to watch out for. Some people prefer to work horizontally rather than vertically, and also usually build a temporary support structure under the canvas (stacked cardboard, i.e.) to protect against stress.

OMG it's true, so shame, how is this even posible????

I’m sure Mr. Keith is exceptional at his job, but if you must paint on Artemisia’s work, wouldn’t it have been kind of fabulous to have a qualified woman do it? It looked so weird, especially knowing her story, to have a man working on her painting.

Thought of it , too. Anyway, there are so many women today restoring the likes of alpha males like Titian and Rembrandt. They would have head a heart attack back in those days, to know women will 'repaint' and 'reconstruct' them, I have a hidden satisfaction about this.

What a clumsy person, pressing the canvas while retouching it, of course, a work of excellent quality without a doubt, no wonder they criticize Baumgartner so much, it leaves others in shame.

Retouching that is easily reversed or removed - is that a standard in the retouching business nowadays?

Absolutely. The ideal is that everything that is done can, at least in theory, but reversed or removed. Varnish, linings, tear repairs, everything. We've got too much experience with fixing the messes left by our predecessors to believe that everything we do will be flawless a hundred years down the road. Though not everyone adheres to these standards, or course.

Harumph, or Who's been rubbing your lamp? They are tracing the whole journey, everything from the beginning to the end, there are many more video’s in the same series. I have yet to see one of these Art restoration video’s where they show more than one subject. If you go to the top of the page they have videos of other restorations.
