Retirement Travel School: How to Manage Your MONEY when You Travel Abroad

We get many questions about how we manage our money while traveling the world. Efficiently managing your money and banking during international travel is one of the most important things you can do. You might not think much about this topic when you’re going on a short trip of a week or two, but when you travel for a month or more, you need to be prepared to handle issues that come up. If you’re like most retirees who travel, you have a nest egg that needs to be protected, taxes that need to be filed, money that needs to be moved around occasionally, and bills that need to be paid. You will also want to convert cash into different currencies, respond to credit card fraud alerts, and react if your credit card gets stolen. We also tell you some tips and tricks about using ATM's abroad and using your travel credit card to save some additional money.
So, whether you are traveling full time or part-time, retired or just dreaming of retirement, we want you to be as prepared as possible for the unexpected issues that can arise. While we have a great time everyday, we have to be alert to money matters, so in today's video, we’re here to tell you how we manage our money while we travel and give you some money saving tips that you can use as you prepare and take that next big world adventure.
We also share the financial advisors that we use, that make our lives so much easier as we travel. We will leave their link below.

Thank you for the video, we always use a card called Wise, convert AUD to any other foreign currency as you need, we the use it as a debit card and ATM card with never having to worry about "other" conversion rates. We also use it to save up for our next trip so we always have some local currency in it :)

The Wise Visa Debit Card allows you to create accounts in almost any currency and charges little to no fees. We also understand (at least in Thailand) that if you take your passport and physically go into a bank to withdraw cash there will be no fees. Might also work for other countries.

Another great video- thanks so much! I retire in 15 months after 30 years of teaching and our first retirement trip will be Belgium in the fall. We are incredibly fortunate to have a free place to stay there so the plan is to stay for a month! I think that will be the longest we will want to travel at a time. Many of the tips in this video will be very helpful for all trips, but especially those month long ones! Stay safe, you two!

Greek tips but never add a debit card to Apple Pay only a credit card. Also, it’s super easy to freeze your credit cards debit cards things like that it’s just one click of a button and I keep all of my cards frozen except for the one I’m using and if I want to use something else I unfreeze it I use it I freeze it again. It’s super fast and easy and that means there’s no charges allowed on my cards. Unless I have that one unfrozen

You see the world opens up much more if you have USD, GBP or Euro. With the silly AUD rate these days unless we go to essentially countries which use their local currency we are stuffed. Another trouble is India- they have a monopoly on the INR and won't let you pre-purchase. This means you are forced to use Airport dodgy rates just so you can have a little cash as everything as you found out in India revolves around cash - much to the dismay of the PM of India.

Great pointers - I’m doing the same retirement travel and had to figure these out on my own. I would also add that physical safety of laptop is critical. I use a small footprint laptop (Microsoft Surface) that fits into a PacSafe bag and bought a pick-resistant lock for it. Most AirBnBs are not that secure and having a way to lock up my laptop (and Passports, etc) while out and about has been critical. Nothing is full proof but this will certainly resist the low-end crooks. Also, I take pictures of passports, credit cards, birth certificates, and more, and have available on a cloud drive for access from any device.

Great tips! It definitely requires some coordination with trusted friends, family and businesses to manage your assets while gone. Doesn't seem to be as common anymore, at least in my experience, but some hotels and businesses in countries that allow VPN will filter VPN traffic and not allow it. In addition to your wonderful tips, I suggest using an online password manager. Of course configure it with 2-factor authentication. You can also set it up so a trusted person has access to it, in the event something happens to your phone and laptop. Safe travels!

We have successfully used Google Voice for this. It gives a US phone number that you can use to receive 2-step verification texts. You can log into your Gmail (Google) account on any device to get your message. It worked great for the month we were overseas this past year. I've kept using it on a couple of accounts when back here in the US now, too, and it continues to work as smoothly as our local phone number. Also nice, there is no charge for this number.

We have an Iphone 14 and 15 and use Google Fi for our service. We can get text and calls anywhere in the world. Works great, except we lose "data" only after 90 days out of the US. We then use Airalo for data. Never had a issue with 2-factor unless in an area with no cell coverage. Hope this helps, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/

Great ideas for managing investments, banking, debit & credit cards. The paying in “local currency” is very wise. I also agree that it’s a bad idea to withdraw funds from ATM’s not attached to a reputable financial institutions.

Regarding your mail service, some banks have allow you to have both a "residential address" and a "mailing address". Since I am not giving up my home, I keep that as the residential address. Then I set up a mailing address to a virtual mailbox service, which is like the RVMail service you mention. Problem is not so much with the banks, but with the Credit Bureaus. They don't know the difference, and they will say that is your residential address. I had to file grievances in order to get them to remove the Mail Service address from my report. So I no longer have two addresses with any bank. It also can lead to problems when buying online. You would have a different shipping address but the bank might deny the transaction if the address is not what they are looking for.

My wife and I are planning to retire next year, sell everything and travel full time. Your videos have been very helpful, especially this one! I do have one question about using the mail service. Do you have your mail service address on your Passports or do you use one of your children's addresses for that? We live in Michigan now, but our daughter lives in Georgia and typically people want to use a mail service in a state with no income tax. I have read that it is difficult to establish domicile in a state we haven't actually lived in. and that Michigan could successfully sue us for back taxes if we can't establish domicile in another state. We do not want to remain a Michigan citizen and are considering trying to establish domicile in Georgia before we start traveling just because that is where our daughter lives so we will be returning there for travel breaks. But Georgia state income tax laws are not any better than Michigan. I think that when we sell our house we will need to get a new passport and I am not sure a mail service address is acceptable for that. What address do you use on your passport?

  • @RetirementTravelers

    @RetirementTravelers

    4 ай бұрын

Great questions. First, there is no address on your passport. Second, we have met many people who sell their home to travel in an RV and move their residency to a no-tax state, but there are some rules you must follow. Some states are stricter than others about wanting to hang on to taxpayers. Since this has such important ramifications, perhaps you should consult a CPA in Florida and ask them. We are hesitant to give you advice when we haven't had Michigan residency. We understand and have read a lot about establishing residency in Florida when we had two homes, but that's a little different. You could also call MyRVMail.com and ask their advice. They probably come across this a lot. Sorry and hope you find the answers you're looking for. Happy Journeys! John & Bev

First off, you both are ROCK STARS! We have binge watched all your videos and are actually seriously of jumping off the gravy train. A question Some of these things don't seem as straight forward as some of the videos make out. Some banks will not do business with a PMB (Personal Mail Box) because they are actually in the USPS system as a business, not residential. Am I overanalyzing this or any suggestions/tips?

Thanks for another great video. I’d love to see how you budget for an entire year of travel or for a trip in Africa (my next destination!). As for financial advisors, my family runs a business in this field and even we admit you can easily DIY a lot and automate a lot (which was less easy to do many years ago) but advisors do take a chunk of your nest egg (1% ends up compounding to be a significant amount).
