    If you own your home and car by the time you retire you can live in the US for 2k a month. Why wouldn’t you be able to live in the Philippines for 2k?

  • @anubous

    @anubous

    Remember, even if you own your home, you have to pay property taxes and insurance. Alternatively, you can sell your US home, use that to buy a home there and have very little monthly cost as far as property taxes/ins. You can even take the $ and invest in a 10/15 year bond returning 5% for a $240,000 home, you're looking at $1000/month tax free w/o touching the principal.

    I think people are tired of budget videos is because EVERYONE'S budget will be different based on their own lifestyle. NO, budget videos can't tell you if you have enough money to live your lifestyle. BUT, what they can do is give you prices for things like electricity, internet, food, rent, etc. so that you have a general idea of what things cost and you can start figuring out their own budget. Budget videos are necessary, but people shouldn't take everything said in them as written in stone.

    Do not shy away myself from budget videos. It is interesting to see how they differ from other budget videos. Now have a pretty good idea how I will do if I decide to retire in the Philippines thanks to the budget videos. You are doing a great service by providing information to everyone of what it is like to live in the Philippines. Thank you, Mike...Jim

    budget videos are important as things change. Many people like myself intend to retire there and rely on budget videos to assist in determining my future cost of living. I live in California...a place where people come to make money during their working life and leave if they expect to retire comfortably.What I would really like is a budget video for a 1BR with a garage in Cebu City, like Marco Polo, Horizons 101 and club ultima. I expect to be able to pay cash for the condo so no rental costs but it's the other costs that can be impactful, most especially of you wish to eat western foods and do western food shopping. Most people there seem to rent and not own condos so the budget videos I seek seem to be difficult to come by.

    This budget thing/debate never ends. Budget videos are fine, just need to be real about it, people are different and too many factors for each person and some people can live simple and some cant. The person asking someone else can I live on this or that a month is the first problem, they are not doing enough research and they need to ask themselves if they can live on that much. Planning as much as possible to go and stay is important but also a plan to exit or change is just as important also, test out the waters exit or change if it does not work out.

    $2000 a month is plenty in the provinces. Manila/BGC will be around $2500 to $2800 a month. So it depends if you want the peace and quiet lifestyle outside of the cities or the comforts and more modern lifestyle of the big cities. All depends on what you want.

    you should start off with only using 80% of your income then divide it by 4 section ... 1 for rent ... 1 for bills ... 1 for food ... and 1 for misc example an income $2000 is $1600 for the month and 400 to save for emergency ... $400 for rent $400 for bills $400 for food $400 for misc ... the number can be move around but it should not pass $1600 and you have to also consider the conversion rate $400 at 55 to 1 is 22000 peso ... $1600 is 88000 peso $400 at 50 to 1 is 20000 peso ... $1600 is 80000 peso $400 at 45 to 1 is 18000 peso ... $1600 is 72000 peso calculate your money in peso and not in dollars for the rate changes from month to month

Kindly be mindful that on or about y2034, US citizens are taking a 23% SS pay decrease. Whether or not that comes to fruition, be prepared. God’s speed to us all. I spent 3 months there 18 months ago I had 100,000 a month in Manila and that was more than enough but then I don’t smoke and hardly drink. People out there on $1000 a month it’s doable but you are living very frugally. To pay for visa renewals and have a decent health insurance a single person needs 65,000 a month minimum in somewhere like dumaguete. A slush fund for things going wrong. I would say a single guy in dumaguete 75,000 is enough and they can run a scooter on that aswell and be comfortable. 2 of you need 100,000 that’s the number me and my wife have come up with if we moved back.

    I always watch budget videos but it’s personal to the author. Some on here say you can’t spend P100k per month that’s simply not true. It just depends on what you want to do. I was spending P120k per month even in 2007. You can live on $300 pm but you will be in the province, eating street food and not doing much else. Similarly you can spend $3000, living in the city, eating at good restaurants + doing most things that interest you. It’s up to your budget that will most likely dictate your lifestyle. Personally for me $2000+ is a decent comfortable lifestyle.

    Had to watch again, I think as Americans we are spoiled. Many who come there want to live exactly as they did in the USA or better. I retired from my main job 19 years ago and started cutting down on my expenses in the USA, never thought I would come back to the Philippines, I visited in 2014 and met my future wife, but I discovered on that trip I could live pretty good there on just my pension being frugal and then I could save my other income which I have done, My wife and I still live quite well. Its not how much you earn its how much you spend, watch the centavos and the pesos will accumulate slowly.

You can live simply and still have a good life in the Philippines. The hardest thing for me there is keeping myself busy and entertained to fight the boredom of life. Remember that they are talking about a 20% cut on social security in 2035 or around that time, so you need to be prepared for that in your assessment.

    First, I love your videos. I have found them entertaining and informative. Yes, budget videos do get old and I swipe past many of them but they are still very important for all the reasons you listed. Additionally, the Philippine economy and exchange rates seem to change constantly in conjunction with world and Asian events. From what I can tell, it seems that most people who retire abroad do so with finances as a major reason for their choice in location, and need to hear the most updated information possible from real people on the ground like you. You don't need to change a thing, Mike. Keep up the3 good work. We all appreciate you for what you do..

    You need to have 'Budget Videos' simply to dispel unrealistic expectations. Too many people come to the Philippines with insufficient funds or income. I am doing ok. I don't actually have a budget. My wife and I have a decent income; we own property, that is increasing in value every month. We also have a business and investments - the investment portfolio alone pays our monthly costs. We take overseas and domestic holidays. Our income is PP100,000 pcm. It's all about planning. We planned for a year before we came here from HK. We bought property before we relocated. Who wants to just exist? I would rather live.

    I do not like Biden and I do not care for Trump.. I think they both are a joke.. when we go to vote we don't have anybody to vote for, we only have somebody to vote against.. if you have had your eyes open you have seen what happened to our economy after Biden got elected and started messing with the oil reserves add oil drilling and as you know gasoline and oil products move everything in the world by ship or by truck or by plane.. I am paying almost double at the grocery store since Biden got elected.. can you imagine if he gets his hands on the world economy!!.. the poor old senile gentlemen screws up everything he touches.. most everything a politician does is because of greed between him and his buddies that are making money off of the decisions in some way or another.. power, money, greed, insider trading, a politician goes into office with little or no money and always comes out a millionaire many times over and so do his buddies.. America will never wake up.. follow the money and you will see what is what and why it is that way.. wake up America!! I will be in the Philippines next month to live out my retirement and I will try to stay away from American politics and all politics because it is like religion, it is a never-ending cesspool of ideas that usually cannot be proven one way or the other.. I should have never said anything about politics but sometimes I just can't help it 😭..I wish everybody good health and lots of happiness 😊

    I think people irritated by budget videos are subconsciously picking up on a reality you aren't considering. The problem with videos like budget videos is a lot of you guys try to speak for the entire country. Look at your title: Can Joe survive on 2k in the Philippines? You can speak to the cost of living in Dumaguete, you have no idea what the cost of living is where I live in Pangasinan. That should kinda be common sense, would a Filipino living in Vegas know anything about the cost of living in New York? Maybe what will help is talking specifically about Dumaguete or Cebu instead of referring to the entire country.

I was able to live comfortably for 4 months (Feb-May 2024) with my jowa. The apartment I rented in Paco, Manila was only PH17,000/mo. Does not include electricity and water. For the 4 months I was there, my total electricity was close to PH15,000. Water was even cheaper. NO internet because I had an international plan with my US phone carrier (ATT). My jowa was the one that kept me from over spending even though we pretty much ate outside everyday. I hope you guys find your filipina out there. Don't get discouraged. Take your time. I think $2000 is really good that is like $100,000 pesos a month it is nothing you can really spend your money on in the Philippines your most expensive is moving to the Philippines and finding a place to rent and buying the items that s need in your house and a motorcycle after that what else is needed. And a little money to visit the doctor.
