Laura! I have even more respect for you now. For 3.5 days of memorial weekend and 2 days this past weekend, I planted and reconfigured the gardens in front of my house. Whew! I am sore and tired. You, Aaron, Paul and Bethany are true rock stars! I figured out I planted just over 45 pots( approx 215 plants) transplanted 11 plants and added 12 new plants to my front landscape plus weeding, mulching, watering...sweating. Wowza, it is already looking so beautiful, and I am going to enjoy the summer watching everything grow. However, I am staying away from the garden center until fall😂 Thank you for all you do to inspire, encourage and teach us the joys of the garden! Much love and continued success to Garden Answer!♡

Laura you have changed my life! I've never attempted gardening until I found your channel and started watching your videos last year. I've always been way too intimidated thinking I'd mess something up. You have taught me so much and I've enjoyed making new beautiful spaces outside my home with my best pal, my 11yr old pup Daisy 🐾🌼by my side. Unfortunately Daisy crossed the rainbow bridge two weeks ago and I've been having a really hard time navigating life without her. I found that spending most of my day outside taking care of my plants/property helps, as it was her favorite place to be. I am even planning a new pollinator garden in memory of my girl. She loved watching the bees and butterflies🐝🦋Just wanted to say thank you Laura, I am looking forward to watching and learning from you as long as you'll let us! 💕

I'm so sorry for your loss. I totally understand as I too have lost my best pal Ruby 2 months ago. She was an adorable 14? yr old Heinz 57 that soneone just didn't want anymore; one of the best days of my life. Cancer. She was my shadow. I'm glad to hear you are finding peace and comfort in your garden. Your plans for a butterfly area sounds like a lovely tribute to your best pup. It's all your fault, Laura! I never thought of planting dahlias until I got dahlia envy from your gorgeous dahlia bed. I purchased several from Swan Island, decided to test some in pots first here in zone 8a since I have an urban garden and wasn't certain where I would put them. Only had one come up the first year. I left them in the pots thinking they were probably goners. Amazingly, more of them are coming up in the pots this year. I purchased more when I saw some at Costco. Now I'm looking for more space to put them in the ground here. Most of my garden these days is all your fault. Thank you so much! )🥀😃🥀

I love that instead of seeing loss you see opportunity! A reminder to all of us 😊
All those houses behind you must love the spectacular bloom when the dahlias are showing off. I'd love to live there & be so close when they're flowering❤
How much do you want to bet that at least a dozen of Laura’s amazing viewers send her some B-Man tubers? This year I’ll have my biggest dahlia patch yet, though I still don’t have my designated spot since this is out first summer in this house.. so I just used my auger and plopped them right in the middle of the yard 😅
Nice to see you've had mostly success with overwintering of your dahlias. Have to say I always pinch my dahlias, I notice a major difference with the productivity. I also pinch my sweet peas, zinnias, cosmos, and snapdragons. I feel once you have confidence to do this technique and discover the benefits you never go back. Happy gardening ya'll!
Good morning, Laura! As a fellow z6 follower I was so inspired by your experiment that I did it myself last October and I'm thrilled by our results! Of 47 tubers, 45 survived and are loving their life. Years prior I'd dig and store them, but never had more than 5 survive because I don't have a good place to store them. So, I figured I had nothing to lose. And like I said, I'm thrilled! I wasn't sure which order of layers you were doing so I put a thick layer of compost, mulch, and leaves (total thickness close to 8"), and then covered with a tarp. I placed a few bricks around the tarp's edges and that was it. Thanks again for inspiring the overwintering dahlia hack. I'll definitely be repeating this natural storage method ❤

Definitely worth the try! My neighbors can't believe it worked either. They're seeing the dahlias growing and are shocked. It was the best feeling when I pulled the tarp off and saw little patches of green. Laura said she uncovered hers when nighttime temps were above freezing, but I left mine on until the last week of April. I don't recall the temps, but it was well above freezing. Like I said, I'm definitely doing it again this year. 🎉

I'm 6b and after watching this I'm really wondering if I could pull off not pulling the tubers up. All the ones I tried storing died last winter so def didn't do a good job at storing them!
Well, while some are lost, survivors will also be multiplying and making more tubers so you’re not really “losing” (except if a whole variety is killed of course). Aaron’s grass is epic!
I followed your advice this past year and covered and mulched my ONE dahlia plant! It worked! Zone 7a. It’s up, and has tons of buds on it! I believe the variety is Sunset, and the flowers on it took my breath away last year. I cannot even imagine the mammoth task of your dahlia patch, but it’s going to look glorious! Well done!

You've convinced me. I moved my dahlias to a separate area just so I could tarp them in one group this fall. I hate the digging, storing, dividing, checking, and hauling them out again to plant, etc and there are always some varieties that just don't store well for me. They have always been worth it in the end to present neighbors, friends, colleagues, and others with beautiful flowers. But, if there is a better way, I am all in. I also watched Jenny Love's video on her process and was inspired not only for the idea of not digging, but that it's better for the soil and you get a head start on the blooming time. Thank you for being my push to try.
The "Pooh" variety is my favorite. 🧡😁

Thank you Laura I'm glad you saved some and grew them on in the green house. I hope you plant the seeds. I heard they for tubers. Amazing. Bless you Laura.
Question about watering - I understand watering the tubers in initially, but how will you mange the mix of plants and tubers until the new tubers have sprouted? Will you hand water the plants only, or will you allow your drip system to water them all? I try to be good, but I'm always so tempted to water those tubers before they sprout! Thanks again for everything you do, Laura! We all love you!

Do what my dad did with his…pot them up - a single bulb/tuber, in a slightly larger pot and plant that into the ground with the lip expose above the ground so you can lift them up after the flowers are spent/finished flowering.
Out of all the flowers, why did you fall in love with Dahlias? Love all your videos ❤

God has blessed you with so much energy,I can’t believe how much you do everyday. Watching you is a pleasure 👍🌹💐🌺
Love to see the beautiful flowers bloom.❤
Every time I have dahlias, the second they start to bloom the wind knocks the whole plant over, regardless of how I have it tied up. This year I have sprayed the one Red Russian I have with silica and tied it up at various heights to keep the whole plant going kaput. Looks great so far, knock on wood, fingers crossed, etc. What is knocking my socks off at the moment are my lilies; Some are nearly nine feet tall, one ses to be mutated and looks like a rose, and another is two stems fused into one which is doing all kinds of crazy things with the leaves and flowers. Nasturtiums, marigolds, and petunias I grew from seed all started flowering this week. 👍👍
Dahlia bread: just because something is edible does not mean one should eat it. 😂
If I had a place in the garage to put them, I'd want to keep tubers in pots in the garage all winter and just see if they rot.
Very educational vlog today. I appreciate the pop up screen with the mature plant as you are describing the tubers. 🏵I believe Dainty Dress Diaries over wintered her dahlias this past winter as well. Waiting to see the results.🌺 I planted my first dahlia ever, Lavendar Perfection, from grocery store tubers. One is potted, one in the ground. Let's see how they do in coastal zone 8.🌸
I'm such a huge fan of GA. Beautiful flower gardens, as always. Say, what would you think about painting the T-post black so that they would kinda disappear. Just a suggestion. Always look forward to your videos. Much thanks.
I bet somebody will send B man her way. We all love her and know pain when fave plant doesnt make it
I left my dahlias in the ground over winter and I'm in a zone 6. I dug them up this year to move them, they were the size of a huge sweet potato. It was crazy to see how giant they got!
I also left my Dahlias in ground because our winters are so mild in last year's, past winter was even way more mild, we didn't get any snow, but it was also way above average rainy, my tubers rotted to last one, I'm not mad or sad, I'll take brake from Dahlias, I need it, tired of lifting and storing, all my Dahlias this year are three planted in pots, I'm not gonna lift them in fall, when frost kill them, I'll store them in garage in pots. There's so much varieties of Zinnias, so easy to grow and last longer as cut flowers, that will be my way until maybe in future again want to plant more Dahlias in ground 😅
Zone 7, we leave them in the ground and see what we get in the spring. So far we have some coming back for their third year. Added some new ones.
Hi Laura, I have an idea! You should continue the black picket fence between the orchard and the grass pathway. It would separate the spaces. Just a suggestion!
I'm in a zone 9. In April (autumn) was given a clump -- "1" pink dahlia. I got it home, divided it into 50! I potted them up because they said to do that in my zone. Put them in the shady spot where they would winter over. 2/3 of them have leaves now, here in winter (June). But, they are happy, so who am I to complain? The other half, who knows if they'll make it or not. Oh well, it's fun to experiment
It’s weird. I’m in the UK and you’re garden, on the whole, is way ahead of mine but my delphiniums have been flowering for at least a fortnight! Nature is wonderful and weird. 😁

Hello, @EnglishMadeleine (beautiful name!) I grow in the "high plains" in the Texas panhandle (That's the top of Texas up by Colorado and New Mexico. Our weather is typically very similar to Laura's. They are a bit cooler because they are in a "high desert" area. They got a lot of rainy cool weather earlier this spring and it set their plants back about a month from their normal times. We started out windy and dry but in the lost 3 weeks have had a lot of rain and much cooler temps than normal. We are normally in the low to mid 90s by now and we are rarely reaching the 80s and it's been wonderful but it's slowed a lot of our plants down a bit, even with all the moisture because of not having our normal heat. Their is doing the same. You don't get a cold in England as we do or as Laura does. It takes a while for them ground temps to warm up from our (both here and in north eastern Oregon) cold winter. It doesn't take ad long, even with your cooler temps, for your ground to warm up and start producing. I have a dear friend who lives on Beccles. She is 83 years YOUNG and has the most beautiful little English garden. I am always amazed at her growth in the spring. Everything "wakes up" faster and her roses bloom, usually, around the same time as ours do and her perineals come up much earlier. Her spring bulbs are always ahead of mine. Normally, even though ours get a later start, the heat and sun cause them to grow on faster. All this to say, climate has a lot to do with it and it's always a little or a lot different from year to year. 🤣 Happy gardening! 😘

What was your lowest temperature over the winter? That likely plays a major role in tuber survival.

First year for Dahlia for me, my purple is Gorgeous! Can’t wait to watch yours grow. In zone 8A so I ll be thinking about covering it by winter
I love Dahlias ❤️🥰❤️
Hi Laura! I just wanted to clarify some info you brought up about pinching. So pinching out the central growth point stops the production of auxin, a chemical that keeps the lower buds from leafing out and taking any enery away from the main leader. Now, what you may be interested in is pinching to encourage longer stems. Instead of the central point, you are supposed to pinch off the 2 lateral flower buds that most dahlias will have when they produce buds. By pinching tbose 2 smaller buds off allows all the energy to go that one main stem and bud. Thus creating the potential for much longer stem length overall. ☺️ I hope that makes sense and helps! I love dahlias, I found my passion for gardening while pregnant with my son ☺️ (who shares a bday with your little guy too, Jan 12th) and grew Arabian Night variety. Gorgeous, two toned depending on tempature (my experience). Ill send you some this fall ! 🌻💙🦋 Thank you for sharing your garden and family with the world. For me, you are a bright moment in what recently have been some of dimmer days. You and your family are truly blessed, fhank you for sharing your blessing and gift with the world. 🌻💙🦋
Covered my dahlias with 6" of chopped leaf mulch then covered with a hay tarp. Removed tarp in mid-April. All survived in Zone 7a.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Boy, I for one did not think those Dahlia tubers would survive your winter freeze and just could not justify such a huge loss, both in terms of value and sweat equity. That experiment was risky, but you proved my thinking wrong. Especially, when you did pull out and put aside your favorite tubers and then loss most anyway. I'll bet your Dahlias put on the most spectacular show this year and cannot wait to watch it. Thanks again and keep challenging the ordinary.
Congratulations on the success of the dahlia experiment! I can't wait to see all the blooms this year!
Aha i don't think I'll bother pinching my dahlias now. I always thought that it would give you many more flowers. But you always have such floriferous dahlias!
I did not lift my dahlias this past year either. Of course I do not plant over 400 nor do I plant in rows I just placed eight around my garden. I live in zone 6 also. I however did not cover with mulch or anything else I just left them in the ground. We did have a fairly mild winter compared to usual. But I have six of the eight back. So that is exciting. I show everybody that comes by. You guys are so full of information and fun stuff. Thanks for everything you guys are doing. Very inspiring. Have a great day.
Laura and Aaron I know you guys have an iPhone so if you take a photo of a flower, plant or shrub maybe even a tree, at the bottom of the photo once taken there is a little ‘i’ icon with a star. If you press on that it will identify the plant. Just a tip to help in the future.
I think these are my most favorite thing you grow! I just love the details of dahlias and how stunning they ALL are! Just love them!!!! Can't wait to see them in arrangements!
I my goodness. The archers of beautiful landscape are amazing. The grass is gorgeous. You all have really made this land gorgeous.
Can't wait to see all the Delia's in bloom. Love the varieties you have chosen.
I wouldn't be surprised if one of your followers has a Benjamin dahlia. You never know if they'll share. I agree with other comments that it was a good experiment, successful. Love learning along with you. Couple nights ago I was sitting on my front porch and realized how much I love my yard this year!! Not so much because i knew better but I ended up with a nice array of color and variety. Also there is always something in bloom. One dyes off and another is starting!!! I watched bumble bees enjoying the flowers. Love it!!! 💜💙💚💛😎
I have to agree that the row crops are satisfying. The beauty of the whole area is clear due to Aaron’s artistic filming.
I live in a zone 6 and planted dahlias for the first time last summer. I didn't have time to dig them up and figured oh well, I'll plant something else next year. Our winter was SO MILD. I couldn't believe it when I saw my dahlias coming up. They are already throwing buds. At this time last year, you couldn't see any growth!

To note, i didn't even cover them. Which is the surprising bit.
An issue with using the plastic to keep out the moisture is it also keeps in the moisture, next time you should use the fabric you use over your veggie beds when you get the odd spring frost.
