Restoring the base and cabinet on an antique Singer treadle sewing machine. Part 3

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video we tackle veneer issues, including removing pieces of veneer that can't be saved, saving what we can and then doing our best to match old to new. Once all the veneer is down, we tackle the difficult job of color matching and refinishing this antique so she can go back home. Enjoy!

It's tough when you are doing anything let alone recording it for someone else to hopefully enjoy. The work alone takes time then you have to consider the video which is just another hurdle. That doesn't even take into account the editing. Posting a video adds at least 25% more time to a project if not more. So, Thank you for your content, effort, and time. I am always trying to learn more and I have learned from your videos.

I bet the owner squealed with delight when they got that back - such a lovely rescue/restoration and all set to remain very beautiful for another century at least (longer if the future owners look after it, which they probably will because it will be seen as a lovely antique from now on and not just some junk in someone's attic, basement or shed). Bravo!

Thank you so much for documenting this process. I’m about to start fixing my Singer and I learned a lot from this series. Luckily my machine is in a much better shape. It’s mostly the veneer that has come loose at the edges and needs to be glued down. And I’ll have also the sewing machine to clean and oil.

This was wonderfully fascinating to watch. You know your stuff, are precise, careful and professional so the end result is magnificent. I'm a collector of vintage and antique sewing machines - I love them; they are works of art. And the tables for them were beautfully made as well. It's easy to see the original craftsmanship in yours, even though someone botched previous repairs. You'd never know that now though!! I just scored a Singer 201-2 sewing machine (a dream buy for me) and will be out looking for a table. My machine is electric though and vintage (1947) rather than antique. Still, the tables made in '47 were well made also. I'm going to have fun finding one, then find someone like you to restore it if necessary. I can fix up and recondition the machines but not the tables! Thank you for the MARVELOUS videos!! I'll be checking others you've done as well.

Wondering if you mix stain with it prior to applying? Mine never changed and I've applied the stain over and over without success. On a 139 year old Model 12 table. 😭

Very dirty though haha

I have a Singer model 66 I am restoring. Everything is going smooth so far, but did have one question. I have sanded the main table top and the veneer is in great condition. However the stain is still mainly there. All the other pieces are good. I didn't want to continue to sand too much, so I was wondering if I could use the liquid stripper on the veneer. I don't want to damage the veneer. Thanks

Did you use the Paint Stripper on the veneer to get the color off too? I just want to make sure I can use it on the veneer and not just the regular wood. Can I sand the veneer without taking it off?

Great job!. What kind of veneer did you buy for this machine? I've read Singer used different types of wood and veneer depending on what part of the country their mill was at. I think a lot of machines use tiger oak. I have two machines I need to get on soon. Thanks for sharing.

This one was quarter-sawn oak (also called Tiger Oak). I have done Walnut and Mahogany as well. Thanks for watching!

Would you show me how to remove the hinges (the round ones that hold the machine)? I tried to remove mine and it broke. Thanks!

How much money went into the restoration? Did the sewing machine itself have any work done on it? I recently got ahold of my grandmother's 1910 singer and all parts need a lot of love. I'd like to get it running again. The machine needs a new paint, the legs are rusted, and the table tops veneer is chipping off...

i picked up a 1911 Singer treadle and the bottom left drawer is stuck shut, it'll pull out about 1/8 inch but dead stops then, any ideas for me?

I wished you lived within reach… I have my grandmothers Singer sewing machine with the flip down front drawer. It’s not in to bad of shape but could use some work on the cabinet. I’m so afraid of the matching the color that If you were near you would have another job.

You're truly an artist! Would you happen to know how I can remove drawers from my very old sewing desk cabinet? They don't pull all the way out & I can't find a latch that holds them in. Thank you.

Sometimes there is a small wooden block of wood which keeps them from coming out. If you have a front pull out drawer, you can usually gently push in on one of the drawer slides to get around it. Good luck!

Wow! Beautiful work. As a complete novice who just bought a Franklin machine in a cabinet, I have a question. Why do you wax the screw threads?

It helps them go back in. The wax acts as a lubricant. Good luck with your project!

Wonderful series! I've learned quite a lot and have enjoyed following along on my own machines. Any chance you could list the products used? i.e. "Brown Dye Stain" what was used for that? etc.

What is the Raw Sienna Glaze and Raw Ember you used? Was that a stain or something else?
