Restoring Quoits AND Paint Rant
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This week we are going to restore the Quoit set that I picked up. It should have been an easy project but I had some issues with the paint. This is not the first project I have had the same problem with.. Thank you for watching I hope you enjoy the video.

My father had a set of quoits. He faithfully hauled it on every family vacation and many picnics throughout my childhood. I remember him setting it up and a few attempts to lure others to join him and play a game. No one ever seemed to have heard of the game or were interested in trying it. We lived in PA, MO, PA, FL, IN, MO while I was growing. Dad spoke fondly of the game referencing playing it in his youth in NJ. He drove the pins into the ground much shorter than horseshoes since the quoit isn't open. The game never took hold in our family. When we settled my parents' estate one of us likely kept the game (me?) for sentimental reasons. If I took them, I have lost track where I put the set. The Hobbits play quoits in Tolkien stories. I suppose that quoits may be popular in England. I brush paint shop restorations with artist brushes. The paint coats lay on thicker than rattle cans, take longer to dry than rattle cans, but I think that the finished job is more durable. Artist brushes clean with little thinner requirement, and I leave little brush stroke evidence. I learned long ago that I can economize on my paint thinner expense by reusing the thinner over and over. I keep a 5 gallon fuel can for collecting used thinner. I pour off ample amounts of used thinner into multiple rinsing containers being careful to disturb the settled paint solids as little as possible. I return the dirty solvent to the used solvent container and use very little new solvent for final rinses. Eventually the solids collect enough that the fuel can becomes brush fire starter. If my collection can gets too full of dirty solvent, I pour off a bit and dispose of it with normal procedures. I keep one can for used paint thinner and a separate system for laqure thinner. I always suffer rattle can runs, miss places with rattle cans, don't like dealing with over spray issues, and I think that my system lowers overall expense. I feel guilty every time that I brush paint metal, but for shop use items, tools and industrial machinery, the system satisfies my needs. I have also been experimenting with using the micro paint rollers. Coverage is great. I dispose of the rollers making no attempt to clean and reuse them. They are hard for me to clean adequately, and solvent expense doesn't justify the effort. I purchased 5 very stained and rusty industrial shop cabinets recently. I used the micro roller on them and got outstanding results for shop use cabinets. I couldn't have reproduced the success with rattle cans at all easily. Report back on the success of quoits fun. Our family never pitched horseshoes. Watching professional horseshoes pitchers emphasizes the importance of suitable pits. Moist clay prevents the careening from hard soil. Dad's quoits needed moist soft soil. The round quoits would otherwise roll quite far.

Hello Paul! That is actually very cool that your Dad was a quoits player. Yes it seems to be more popular in the UK and Australia. We have always played horse shoes but now Corn hole seems to be the popular back yard game. Not my favorite. I'm kinda thinking about setting up for powder coating but I don't know if I do enough painting projects to make it worth it? I don't mind brush painting but rattle can is faster and I think i'm more skilled at it. I will let you know how the Quoits go over and if you are ever in my neck of the woods and fancy a game for sentimental sake let me know.
Looks great George. The video was very interesting and I watched every minute. Looks like a fun game to play with family!

Thank You Mr. Bill. Ya it does seem like it's gonna be fun my boys are already trash talking..So the "old man" is gonna have to show them how it's done.😄
I’ve never seen or heard of that ring toss game- Fantastic idea! One rule that usually holds true with paint “The longer the cure time the more durable the finish”. The fastest drying paint has alway been lacquer but it chips very easily. A good enamel should take a week to cure. It’s funny how your hair was shoulder length in the beginning of the video and short by the end! 😂👍. Great stuff!

It’s a shame you haven’t had any luck with the Rustoleum Red. The quoits turned out really nice. I can see the paint chipping a lot after a few games. Down under we don’t play horseshoes but quoits are played, although usually the hoop is made of a heavy tarred rope. A fun game. You and your family will have a blast this summer. Take care buddy.

Hey My Brother! I'll just have to make sure I got a few days for it to cure if I use it again.. I'll have to ring you up when we play so you can give me some pointers. Take care hope all is well and say hello to the Missus.
Great job! I can't wait for a demonstration! I've also had problems with paint from rustoleum, my experience is it just spits out of the can brand new. Thanks again and see you next time!

Hey Mike Thank you, luckily I haven't had that issue it's just reactions either it won't kick off or it will blister no matter what I do even with primer...
Its a mystery to me about the Rustoleum paint issue. Regardless, your paint job came out well. Thanks for saving this old game set. Hope you have lots of fun with it this summer. By the way, dont worry about randomness and rants. Your videos are always interesting.

Thank you Pat, I still don't know about this paint but in the end we got it. I like doing all sorts of things like most guys in the shop sometimes just puttering and yep sometimes things just don't go how I think it will or should. I am glad you enjoy the videos. I appreciate your positive comments.
Maybe using a primer first would help. I always prime bare metal first before the finish coat. Interesting game, thanks for the video

Hey !George vraiment une très belle restauration, les cercles sont superbes, malgré le séchage difficile de la couleur rouge et les piquets en argent ça le fait. Vivement l'été pour pouvoir jouer. ❤

Cool game, I haven’t seen that one before. Now find yourself some jarts and you’ll be busy all summer. I got some industrial massy Ferguson red paint and it was the same way. I couldn’t touch it for about 3 days between coats. Thanks.

Enjoyed the vid, haven't seen a set in many years... Feeling really old now... I also have had bad luck with any Rust-Oleum reds and some greens. If I use any I plan to let them sit for my work week and check them by the following weekend.....

Cool yard game, never played but looks fun. You know I’ve had the same issues with Regal Red, it’s what I use for Craftsman red. It does take a while to harden but seems to be okay. I just don’t dare touch it for a day or it will have fingerprints for sure!

That's a bummer. I don't have the patience to wait. Three days would drive me crazy. I had a paint problem with can of Behr green that was still not cured after a week. I took it back to Home Depot and got a refund. Your project looks great.

Has Jon cursed Rustoleum regal red until they rename it "Scoutcrafter red"??? Lol I had some JB weld 5 min epoxy that took 2 days and a torch to cure. I understand that Krylon has some new colors coming out to complete with Rustoleum . I do think that a short tutorial on how to play Quoits is in order now that you have us all curious about it!! Thanks for sharing and for paint info.
@Uwannawatch

Hey Patrick! That is the only logical explanation! LOL! That sucks about the epoxy I've only had that happen once but yep the worst thing is having a project on hold for something like that. I will try to do a little demo later in the summer.I still have to figure out how to look like I know what I'm doing LOL.
Hey nice turn out on those Quoits. Occasionally I'll have a problem with a particular can of Rustoleum paint but not color. Wondering if it was a bad batch. I have the luxury of just taking it back to the Hardware store where I work but it's aggravating. Especially since the cost is high. I'm going to try that color at our store and see what happens then I'll let you know. Video was good especially letting us know about the crappy paint. You should think about throwing in a clip of you using them when you start playing. Stay safe brother!

I have Regal Red in my cabinet and haven't had any issues. Was it just that one can you had issues with? I try to use Rust-Oleum 2X when I can as that seems to cure much faster than a regular Rust-Oleum. Great job! I really liked the white, very nice touch.

Hey Man, Thanks! No I have 2 cans I bought them at the same time. I used it on the Hubley truck with primer and it was the same way. I know some paints take a bit longer and other things factor in but I'm telling ya this was actually dripping for a long time.
Maybe heat up whatever you're painting with a hairdryer till it's warm to the touch. Paints with loads of colorants can be a pain. I use to do colored plaster finishes for over a decade and the more colorant (we used Ben Moore), the longer it took to cure. And it smelled heavily of ammonia. Wish that would come back into style. It's a timeless look and one of my favorite ways of making ¿skrilla?

Hey Mr. Dale, I think it's gonna be fun to play. I don't know but this paint was wet not just tacky for days...Thanks Buddy!
I know what you mean about the Red. Those enamel spray paints are a real pain when it comes to drying it. I find Epoxy enamel is the worst. You need to give them a good week to cure. Also just personal opinion with the rustoleum range, Universal is very good, 2X is decent but that one u used there ,that says enamel or 5 in 1.. utter rubbish 😉👍
